Air compressor oil buying guide
Air compressor oil: use the grade your manual names
Only oil-lubricated compressors take oil, filled to the middle of a sight glass. Use non-detergent compressor oil in the grade your manual names, never regular motor oil. Campbell Hausfeld lists SAE 30 or a 10W-30 synthetic; Makita says not to use 10W-30 and picks SAE 10W, 20W or 30W by air temperature.
Which to buy: Milton 1002-32 compressor oil, 32 oz, on Amazon, if your manual names SAE 30 (ISO 100) non-detergent compressor oil, as Campbell Hausfeld’s do. Milton lists it as SAE 30W, ISO 100 and non-detergent, for oil-lubricated reciprocating compressors. Amazon also lists a 1-gallon Milton 1002, described in its title as ISO-100, SAE 30W and non-detergent (check the 1-gallon Milton 1002 on Amazon); Milton’s own page we read shows only the 32 oz size. On a Makita MAC2400, MAC5200 or MAC700, SAE 30 is Makita’s grade only above 80.6°F; below that, Makita names SAE 20W or 10W.
Prepared from Campbell Hausfeld's manuals for the CE1000 and XC302100 and for its VX4002 and VT-series portables, Campbell Hausfeld's compressor FAQ, Makita's MAC2400, MAC5200 and MAC700 manuals, Quincy Compressor's oil guide and three Milton pages, read October 10, 2026. We have not tested these oils. The two Milton links were checked on October 10, 2026 as new, sold by Amazon.com and in stock; offers change, so check that the listing names Milton 1002. No other oil on this page is linked, including Campbell Hausfeld’s own part numbers.
Does your compressor take oil?
Campbell Hausfeld's FAQ separates the two types. An oil-lubricated compressor has an oil-filled crankcase and needs routine oil changes. An oil-free compressor uses self-lubricating Teflon or carbon rings and needs virtually no maintenance. An oil-free compressor gets no crankcase oil.
Compressor oil is not air tool oil. Compressor oil goes in the pump’s crankcase, and the manuals above name the grade. Air tool oil goes in an in-line lubricator, or into a tool that needs oiling. Milton says its lubricator provides oil to air tools that require lubrication, and recommends its own oil #1001 for its in-line lubricator. Buy each for its own job.
A new oil-lubricated compressor may not be ready to run. Campbell Hausfeld's XC302100 manual says the unit contains no oil, and Makita's manuals say its compressors are shipped without oil. Both say a little oil left from factory testing is not enough to run the pump. Fill it before the first start.
Oil by model
| Compressor | Oil the manual names | Capacity | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campbell Hausfeld CE1000, XC302100 | SAE 30 (ISO 100) non-detergent compressor oil, part ST125303AV (0.5 qt) or ST126701AV (4 qt); or 10W-30 synthetic such as Mobil 1, or CE0032 (1 qt) | About 15.2 oz | After the first 50 hours, then every 3 months or 200 hours, whichever comes first |
| Campbell Hausfeld VX4002, VX4011, VT6290, VT6182, VT6183, VT6104, VT6271 | The same two options and part numbers | About 8.5 oz | After the first 50 hours, then every 3 months or 200 hours, whichever comes first |
| Makita MAC2400, MAC5200, MAC700 | Air compressor oil only; SAE 10W (ISO 32) from 3.2 to 32°F, SAE 20W (ISO 68) from 33.8 to 78.8°F, SAE 30W (ISO 100) above 80.6°F | Not given; fill to the middle of the sight glass | Every 300 hours or 3 months, whichever comes first |
Makita's manuals say compressor oil is provided with these models. For Campbell Hausfeld, our arithmetic from its capacities: the 0.5 qt (16 oz) ST125303AV covers one fill of either model group, and the 4 qt (128 oz) ST126701AV covers about 8 fills of the 15.2 oz pumps or 15 of the 8.5 oz pumps.
Where the makers differ
- 10W-30 synthetic: Campbell Hausfeld lists it as one of two options. Makita says multi-viscosity motor oils like 10W-30 leave carbon deposits and should not be used. Follow your own maker.
- Regular motor oil: both say no. Campbell Hausfeld says the additives in regular automotive oil can cause valve deposits and shorten pump life. Its FAQ calls for non-detergent industrial-grade compressor oil.
- Mineral or synthetic: Quincy Compressor, an industrial maker, says standard mineral-based compressor oil suits homeowners and light or medium-duty use, and synthetic suits professionals who run a compressor at least three times a week. It also says to use the oil your compressor's maker recommends.
Filling and changing
- Fill: with the compressor on a level surface, pour slowly into the oil fill opening until the level reaches the middle of the sight glass. Campbell Hausfeld warns not to fill through the breather cap opening, because oil may leak and spray out during operation.
- Change: remove the drain plug and let the oil drain completely, refit the plug, and refill to the proper level. Makita recommends sealing compound or Teflon tape on the drain plug to avoid leaks.
- At least yearly: Quincy's guide says that, regardless of use, the oil should be changed at least once a year.
- Oil in the air: Campbell Hausfeld says an oil-lubricated compressor always passes a small amount of oil into the air. For a large amount, its manual lists worn piston rings, a restricted air intake, too much oil (drain down to the full level) and the wrong oil viscosity, for which it says to use Mobil 1 10W-30 or full synthetic.

When to skip one
- Skip any oil for an oil-free compressor’s pump.
- Skip air tool oil for the crankcase; buy the compressor oil your manual names.
- Skip regular automotive motor oil in any of the compressors above.
- Skip 10W-30 in a Makita MAC2400, MAC5200 or MAC700, even though Campbell Hausfeld allows a 10W-30 synthetic in its own models.
