Snow shovel buying guide
Battery-powered snow shovels: 6 in. or 8 in. of snow, and the battery platform you already own
The shovels here clear a 12 to 13 in. path for steps, decks, patios, walks and smaller driveways. Choose by snow depth (about 6 in. for EGO and Snow Joe, 8 in. for Greenworks' SS80L02) and by the battery you already own. Each maker's surface rules are below.
From EGO's, Snow Joe's and Greenworks' product pages and EGO's and Snow Joe's manuals, read October 10, 2026; we have not tested these, and clearing and throw figures are the makers' own. The two buy links were checked that day as new, sold by Amazon.com and in stock; check the model number on the listing.
Quick answer: first kit or a battery you already own
- No battery yet, snow up to about 6 in.: the EGO SNS1201 kit. The shovel, a 2.5Ah battery and a 210W charger are in the box, and EGO claims up to a 3-car driveway in 6 in. of snow on that battery. Check the EGO SNS1201 kit on Amazon
- You already own Greenworks 80V batteries, or want 8 in. depth and will buy the battery separately: the Greenworks SS80L02, tool only. Greenworks says it runs on any Greenworks 80V battery; the battery and charger are sold separately. Check the Greenworks 80V SS80L02 on Amazon
- You already own EGO 56V batteries: the SNS1200 is the same shovel without a battery or charger. EGO describes its 56V batteries as compatible with all EGO outdoor power equipment. No checked buy link here.
- You own Snow Joe or Sun Joe 24V tools: the Snow Joe 24V-SS13 kit adds a 4.0Ah battery and charger that Snow Joe says work with 150+ Snow Joe and Sun Joe tools. No checked buy link here.
Battery and coverage checklist
| Shovel | Battery platform | In the box | Maker's per-charge claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| EGO SNS1201 (kit) | EGO 56V | 2.5Ah battery and 210W charger | Up to a 3-car driveway in 6 in. of snow on the 2.5Ah battery |
| EGO SNS1200 (tool only) | EGO 56V | No battery or charger | Not stated for the tool alone |
| Snow Joe 24V-SS13 (kit) | Snow Joe 24V | 4.0Ah battery and charger; 110-minute maximum charge | No run time or area given; up to 300 lb of snow a minute, varying with conditions |
| Greenworks SS80L02 (tool only) | Greenworks 80V | No battery or charger | None on the page we read |
- Match the brand and voltage to the battery you own: EGO lists its shovel on its 56V batteries, Snow Joe on its 24V IONMAX battery, and Greenworks on its 80V batteries.
- Buying a tool-only model without the battery means it will not run; budget for the battery and charger unless you already own them.
- EGO's driveway figure is the maker's claim for its included battery, not a measured run time. Snow Joe and Greenworks publish no run time or area on the pages we read, so we do not estimate one.

The exact shovels
EGO POWER+ SNS1201. EGO's manual rates it for sidewalks, steps, decks, patios and smaller driveways when the snow is under 6 inches, with a 12 in. clearing width, a 6 in. intake, a throw of up to 25 ft, two speeds and 14 lb without a battery. EGO's page gives 16.7 lb with the included 2.5Ah battery and claims up to a 3-car driveway in 6 inches of snow on that battery. The SNS1200 is the tool only. EGO lists a 5-year limited tool warranty and a 3-year limited battery warranty. Check the EGO SNS1201 kit on Amazon
Snow Joe 24V-SS13. Snow Joe says it cuts 13 in. wide by 6 in. deep in one pass, throws snow up to 20 ft with a 2-blade paddle, clears up to 300 lb of snow a minute (it notes this varies with snow conditions), and weighs 13 lb net. It lists a 400 W motor and a 24V 4.0 Ah battery and charger in the kit, a 110-minute maximum charge time, a battery that works with 150+ Snow Joe and Sun Joe tools, and a 2-year warranty. Snow Joe describes it for quick pickups on decks, steps, patios and sidewalks.
Greenworks 80V SS80L02 (SKU 2618402, tool only). Greenworks lists a 12 in. clearing width, an 8 in. clearing depth, a 25 ft throw, a brushless motor, LED headlights, directional vanes and a 4-year limited tool warranty. It runs on Greenworks' 80V batteries, which are not included. Check the Greenworks 80V SS80L02 on Amazon
Greenworks also sells 40V 12 in. shovels, but the model numbers and specs on its pages and on current listings do not line up (one page markets 6 in. while its spec table says 4 in.), so we have left them out until they can be matched model by model.
Surfaces and limits
- EGO: its manual says never to use the shovel on frozen lakes, rivers or similar surfaces or on a rooftop, and not on gravel unless the shovel is adjusted for that surface.
- Snow Joe: its manual says the shovel is intended only for paved surfaces and not to clear gravel or crushed rock, though another section gives a technique for gravel. Treat it as a paved-surface tool.
- Greenworks: it does not recommend the SS80L02 on uneven or non-paved areas and says it works best on smooth, flat surfaces.
For deeper snow or a larger driveway, our snow blower guides compare EGO's 21 in. and 24 in. blowers.
When to skip one
- Skip the EGO and Snow Joe for snow deeper than about 6 in.; their makers rate them for 6 in.
- Skip the Greenworks SS80L02 as a first battery tool unless you will also buy a Greenworks 80V battery and charger; it is tool only.
- Skip these for gravel drives and uneven ground: Snow Joe limits its shovel to paved surfaces, Greenworks does not recommend non-paved or uneven areas, and EGO rules out gravel unless the shovel is adjusted for it.
