DEWALT angle grinder buying guide
DEWALT angle grinders: 4 to 9 in., cordless or corded, and which safety brake you get
Choose the wheel size first, then the power source and the safety features. DEWALT's cordless 20V MAX grinders take 4 to 5 in. wheels; its 60V MAX DCG460B and corded DWE4557 and D28499X take 7 or 9 in. wheels. Several models stop the wheel when it pinches or binds: DEWALT calls this ANTI-ROTATION on the ATOMIC grinders and the DWE43144N, and KICKBACK BRAKE on the DCG413 grinders.

Safety features DEWALT lists
- ANTI-ROTATION (DCG400B, DCG402B, DWE43144N): stops the wheel when a pinch, stall or bind-up is sensed. On the DWE43144N, DEWALT says the e-clutch acts in less than a tenth of a second.
- KICKBACK BRAKE (DCG413B, DCG413FB): when a pinch, stall or bind-up is sensed, the electronic brake engages with maximum force to stop the wheel.
- Electronic brake on release: DEWALT gives 1.15 seconds for the DCG400B (with a 1/16 in. DW8716 wheel) and 1.25 seconds for the DCG402B (with a .045 in. DW8062 wheel).
- Power-loss reset: on the DCG413B, DCG413FB and DWE43144N, the switch must be cycled after a power loss before the grinder restarts.
Where DEWALT's pages disagree
- DCG413FB: named a 5 in. grinder, but its spec list gives a 4.5 in. wheel diameter and its includes list a 4.5 in. guard.
- DCG412B: its includes list names a FLEXVOLT 60V MAX grinder, though the page and spec list are for the 20V MAX DCG412.
- DWE4557: features say 11.6 lb; the spec list gives 14.7 lb. Its warranty field says the information is unavailable.
- Warranty: the other grinders list a 3-year limited warranty.
When to skip one
- Skip the DCG412B, DWE402 and DWE4120 if you want a listed anti-kickback or wheel brake feature.
- Skip the DCG400B if you use 4-1/2 in. wheels; it takes 4 in. wheels.
- Skip the DCG460B if you have no FLEXVOLT battery.
