Choose it for nugget ice, not maintenance-free frozen storage

The stainless XPIO13SWSS is the Opal 2.0 Ultra package with a three-quarter-gallon side tank, not an Opal Mini or the one-gallon XL package. It makes nugget ice and includes a pull-out bin, scale-inhibiting filter, reusable rear air filter, stainless scoop and magnetic scoop holder. Consider it if this ice format matters enough to dedicate counter space and regular care to a separate appliance.

The three-pound bin is storage capacity, not the amount it makes in a day, and it is not a freezer. The supplied manual describes recirculation of melt-water and recommends draining when use is low or the machine will be off for more than a few days. A full bin also stops production. Do not read the daily harvest claim as thirty-eight pounds waiting in the drawer or as a guarantee that it can serve every party without planning.

Understand the temperatures behind the production claim

GE advertises up to thirty-eight pounds per day, or 1.6 pounds per hour, at 70°F ambient air and 60°F water. The same product page gives thirty-two pounds per day, or 1.33 pounds per hour, at 90°F air and 70°F water. These are manufacturer ratings under stated conditions, not our measurements, and they should not be borrowed as a heat-adjustment formula for unrelated ice makers.

The product page promises a first batch in ten minutes or less, while the linked family manual says initial ice production takes ten to thirty minutes. Neither statement means a full three-pound bin appears that quickly. Allow preparation time, potable water, an appropriate room temperature and a separate plan for storing ice you want to keep for later.

Measure working clearance and a route for draining

The maker and exact retail listing agree on a body measurement of 16.5 inches high, 13.43 wide and 17.5 deep for this side-tank package. The installation instructions additionally require four inches of clearance on both sides and behind the machine, on an upright, flat, level surface that supports its filled weight. A cabinet opening matching only the body width is therefore not a sufficient fit check.

The manual specifies indoor use in a ventilated area between 55°F and 90°F, away from heat and direct sunlight. Allow access to the rear hoses, air filter, removable bin and water tank. Draining requires a reachable sink or suitable collection vessel; the instructions name a minimum half-gallon or two-liter vessel. The side tank must be attached and positioned as instructed, not elevated above the unit, because an incorrect arrangement can cause overflow.

Cleaning controls do not eliminate hands-on care

Sanitizing, descaling, rinsing and cleaning removable parts are distinct jobs. The manual provides different sequences for four-button and three-button panels, including different descaling durations. Use the procedure matching the actual machine, remove the accessory water filter when instructed and complete the fresh-water rinses. The Ultra rear air filter must be checked and cleaned at least every two months according to both the manual and web support. It is rinsed and dried after hand cleaning, not put in a dishwasher, and the unit should not run without it. The side tank is hand-wash only. Plan for these tasks and drain access before choosing a permanent counter location.

Power, weight and connected controls need separate checks

Amazon's current table lists 150 watts and a 49.2-pound item weight. GE's exact product panel instead lists 360 watts and 37.65 pounds net, while its linked manual gives 37.6 pounds empty. The maker panel states 2.5 amps and the manual three amps at 120V AC and 60Hz. We have not reconciled those electrical and weight differences; verify the actual rating label and handling requirements rather than estimating running cost or lifting effort from the retail table alone.

Built-in WiFi supports SmartHQ scheduling and maintenance alerts, and GE advertises voice integrations. The machine also has physical touch controls. Connected features are optional conveniences, not evidence that cleaning or troubleshooting is automatic.
