The HB6550-2: one screen, two cameras

This listing is the two-camera set, model HB6550-2. The user manual attached to the listing names that model on its cover and lists the package as one parent unit, two camera units, three power adapters, two wall-mounting kits and the manual. Amazon's box list matches, describing the cameras as plug-in. The listing says the parent unit can take up to four cameras in total.

It is a closed system: a 5-inch IPS screen talking to the cameras on 2412 to 2469 MHz, with no Wi-Fi and no app. The manual says the cameras come pre-registered to the parent unit; if one drops off, you add it again from the Camera menu and press the PAIR button on the back of the camera.

Every adapter is rated 5V DC 1A, and the manual says to use only the adapters provided. The cameras run from the wall; only the parent screen has a battery, a 3.7V 3500mAh lithium-ion pack of 12.95 Wh.

Two cameras, but one picture at a time

The listing is clear that this is single view, not split screen: you see one camera at a time and switch between them. The manual gives two ways to do it. The View/Scan key shows each camera for about 10 seconds before moving to the next, and its FAQ describes a Camera-Cycling mode, turned on by pressing the key three times, that switches every 10 seconds.

That suits two rooms where a glance is enough. If you want both views on screen at once, this monitor does not do that, according to the listing. Pan and tilt are driven from the parent unit's arrow keys, a step at a time or continuously when held; the listing gives 355 degrees of pan and 120 degrees of tilt.

Zoom is reached by holding the zoom key for about two seconds in full-screen mode. Amazon's details list both a 2x optical zoom and a digital zoom type; the manual's section is headed Digital Zoom.

Range: plan around 165 feet indoors

The listing headline says 1000 ft, and a bullet notes that figure was tested outdoors, not indoors. The manual's technical data gives both: up to 1000 ft (300 m) outdoor, line of sight, and up to 165 ft (50 m) indoor. Indoors, plan around the 165-foot figure.

The manual lists what cuts into it. Large metal objects such as a refrigerator, mirror, filing cabinet, metal doors or reinforced concrete may block the signal; walls, TVs, computers, phones, fluorescent lights and dimmer switches reduce it. Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices and microwave ovens may interfere, so keep the monitor at least 5 ft (1.5 m) from them.

The manual and the listing both say to pull the parent unit's antenna up when in use. The manual's FAQ also points to a RESET key on the back of the parent unit, and notes audio feedback if the units are too close or the volume is high.

Battery: 16 hours in the manual, 30 on the listing

The manual's technical data gives the parent unit a battery life of up to 16 hours, and Amazon's own details field says 16 hours with the screen on. The listing bullets also claim up to 30 hours in ECO mode, a figure the manual does not give. Both are reported here; ask HelloBaby to confirm the 30-hour figure if it matters to you.

ECO mode is what stretches it. If the camera hears nothing for 30 seconds, audio stops and the parent screen switches off, coming back when sound passes the chosen sensitivity, low, middle or high. The manual's FAQ notes this is why the screen goes black every 30 seconds, and that turning ECO off keeps it on.

Charging has its own limit: the manual gives an operating range of 32 to 104°F but a battery charging range of 50 to 104°F, with 15 to 85 percent relative humidity.

Placement: within 6 feet, dry, and cords out of reach

The manual asks you to place each camera within 6 feet (2 metres) of the area being monitored for optimum performance, and night vision, which is black and white only, gives its optimum image at about 6 feet. The cameras stand on a desk or mount on a wall; the wall sheet gives a 1:1 drilling template with 50 mm and 35 mm spacings and says the holes must be horizontal.

Keep both units dry, off soft bedding and out of cupboard corners, and away from radiators, cookers and direct sun. Amazon's details list the product as indoor and outdoor and IP54 in one field but not water resistant in another; the manual only describes keeping it away from rain and moisture, so treat it as an indoor product.

The manual opens with cord and other safety warnings, including where cords must be kept and which adapters may be used, and states that the product is not a substitute for adult supervision. Read that full safety section before setting up.

Temperature alarm, timer, lullabies and warranty

Each camera reads room temperature from 0 to 50°C. You can show °F or °C, even though Amazon's details fix the unit as Celsius, and set high and low limits that default to 36°C and 8°C; outside them the screen shows the icon and beeps until you press a key. A repeating timer runs in half-hour steps up to 5 hours, and eight lullabies play from the camera.

The manual gives a one-year warranty from the original purchase date against defects in workmanship and materials. Keep your dated sales receipt, as it is needed for warranty service; registration is not required. The manual says attempting your own repairs voids the guarantee and gives an email address for support. Clean with a slightly damp or anti-static cloth, never solvents.
