Best electric bikes for adults: check the class, battery and load limit first

Check the class, battery and load limit before you pick a bike

Check the class and your local rules; makers' labels do not always match the legal definitions. In California, for example, the Vehicle Code caps an e-bike motor at 750 watts; Class 1 and 3 assist only while you pedal, to 20 and 28 mph, and Class 2 may use a throttle to 20 mph. Eskute lists the D200 as Class 3 at 28 mph, yet it has a twist throttle.

Vivi lists the F26FUL as Class 2 but gives a 25 mph max. Windhorse and Jasion name no class. Rules vary by state, city and trail; this guide is not legal advice.

Motor, battery and range figures are maker claims, and the Amazon title often says more. Jasion's manual gives 1500W peak where the Amazon title says 2000W; Eskute's manual and page give 48V 10.4Ah where the title says 13Ah. Range claims carry no test conditions: Windhorse's manual gives 35 to 50 miles with pedal assist, Vivi's page 34 to 50, and Eskute and Jasion up to 55 and 50 miles. The table below lists all 13 models. Ask the seller which battery ships before you order.

A low-step commuter: Windhorse F2

The F2 is a step-through with a 350W motor, a 20 mph top speed and a 36V 13Ah battery, per the manual. The manual caps the load at 330 lb and says not to ride in wet conditions, though Windhorse's page calls the battery IPX5. It charges in 6 to 7 hours. Windhorse's page advertises a one-year warranty on the frame, motor and battery, but its warranty policy gives 12 months on the frame and only 3 months on the motor and battery. The page calls the battery UL certified without naming a standard.

A folding bike: Eskute D200

Eskute says the D200 folds in four steps to 33.4 by 33.2 inches. Its manual gives a 265 lb load limit while Eskute's page says 400 lb, so plan around 265. Charging takes 7 to 8 hours in the manual's spec table but 4 to 6 on Eskute's page, so plan on the longer figure. Eskute's warranty page gives one year to the original owner, but a clause on the same page covers the frame, motor, controller and most other parts only within one week of delivery, and it excludes weather damage. Get the terms in writing.

A heavy-duty fat-tire bike: Jasion EB5 MAX

The manual gives a 400 lb payload, an 83 lb bike, a 28 mph top speed, a 48V 15Ah battery, a 7 to 8 hour charge and an IPX4 rating. It lists 1500W peak power; the Amazon title says 2000W. The manual says not to ride in wet conditions. Its warranty covers only the original owner of a bike bought from Jasion online or in a Jasion store, and the manual page states no term. Ask Jasion in writing whether an Amazon purchase counts.

A fat-tire bike with two battery sizes: Vivi F26FUL

Vivi's page rates the F26FUL IP54 and lists riders 170 to 200 cm (about 5 ft 7 in to 6 ft 7 in). Vivi sells 12.8Ah and 18Ah versions, its manual lists 12.8Ah, and the Amazon title says 18Ah, so confirm which one ships. The manual gives a 286 lb (130 kg) limit and Vivi's page says 330 lb, so plan around 286. The manual says not to ride in heavy rain or through water deeper than 30 mm. The page says the bike is SGS certified to UL 2849 and UL 2271; no certificate was found.

Vivi's warranty page gives one year on the frame, battery, motor and charger, and excludes battery damage from an improper charger or water. It names Amazon among its authorized dealers, but another paragraph limits cover to bikes bought from Vivi, so keep your order record.

Before you ride, charge or store

• Helmet. All four manuals say to wear one; Eskute's names the US CPSC standard, 16 CFR 1203.
• Age. Windhorse's manual says the F2 should never be used by children under 18, and Jasion's says under 16. Eskute says its e-bikes are not for sale to under-18s, and Vivi's page lists riders 16 and up.
• Where to charge. Eskute's manual says to charge indoors at 32 to 104 °F in a well-ventilated area, away from heat and flammable materials, never unattended and for no more than 12 hours. Jasion's gives the same temperature range.
• Which charger. Eskute's manual says other chargers raise the risk of fire or explosion; Vivi's names one charger model and says not to cover it.
• Plug order. Windhorse's manual says to unplug the wall end first and then the battery. Vivi's says to connect the bike first, to prevent sparks.
• Storage. Eskute's manual says to keep at least 80 percent charge for storage beyond two weeks, at 50 to 77 °F. Jasion's gives the same range and says to recharge monthly.
