Best golf rangefinders: check the slope rule first, then the range claim

Slope decides where a golf rangefinder can be used

Slope, also called “play-as” distance, adjusts the yardage for uphill and downhill shots. Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf (R&A's published copy) allows getting distance information from a distance-measuring device. It lists measuring elevation changes, getting a club recommendation based on where your ball lies, and measuring wind speed at the course as not allowed, and a Committee may ban distance-measuring devices altogether. So a slope model needs a way to turn slope off, and you should ask the event organiser before relying on it. Bushnell's V7 manual cites “Rule 14-3”; the current rulebook numbers this Rule 4.3.

Treat range and zoom figures as maker claims. Both Bushnell pages here list 5 to 1,300 yards at 6x and give no separate flag distance. Leupold's spec table shows how much the target matters: 1,400 yards on a reflective target, 1,200 on trees, 900 on deer. Ask what a figure was measured on. The table below lists nine more models, including the Pro X3+ Link, the Phantom 3 GPS, the laser-and-GPS Tour Hybrid and the Garmin Approach Z10, each with its own guide.

A slope switch you can see: Bushnell Tour V7 Shift (Patriot Pack)

A slope switch on the side: left shows an orange indicator and slope distances, right removes slope, which Bushnell says conforms to the Rule. It has a red and green OLED, a CR2 battery, a 24 mm lens and a two-year limited warranty. Bushnell's spec table says “waterproof: yes, IPX6”, but its manual says not to expose it to heavy rain. Club suggestions need a launch monitor and two app accounts, and the Rule lists club advice as not allowed, so leave that off in competition. Bushnell's page gives 9 oz; its manual says 8.7 oz.

Pocket size and USB-C: Bushnell A1-Slope

Bushnell lists 5.1 oz, 3.75 by 1.42 by 2.36 inches, 6x, 5 to 1,300 yards and a built-in rechargeable battery: about four hours to charge and 50-plus rounds, over USB-C. Slope turns off from the Mode button, not an outside switch, so set it before you tee off. The manual says the internal battery cannot be changed, and it gives the same heavy-rain caution as the V7 Shift manual despite the IPX6 rating. It carries a two-year limited warranty.

For hunting, not golf: Leupold RX-1400i TBR/W Gen 2

Leupold sells it for hunting and shooting, with rifle holds, wind holds and bow modes, and 5x magnification. Its spec table lists “True Golf Range: No”, so do not buy it for the course. Leupold gives the electronics a five-year guarantee from the date of purchase and says proof of purchase may be required, so keep the receipt. Leupold's spec table lists it as a Class 3R laser, so never point it at anyone's eyes. Read the manual's setup steps for the rifle, wind and bow modes before you hunt.

What to check before buying

The golf rangefinder guides here check how each unit handles slope, whether it has a switch or mode to turn it off, and what extra features need an app or paired device. They compare maximum and flag-lock range across the maker's documents, name the battery type, set water claims beside the manual's care text, and read each warranty's length and conditions.

This page collects 12 golf rangefinder guides from Plain Buy Guides. Each guide covers one exact Amazon listing: the maker's published specifications, what the listing says is included, the fit and installation limits that decide whether it suits you, and the main caveat, with every source listed and dated. Nothing here is based on hands-on testing, and no guide promises a price or stock level.

In the table above, the Best for column says who each model suits, and the strength and caveat columns carry the first point each guide makes. Open a guide before buying to confirm the exact model, the included parts and any conflict between the listing and the maker's documents, which each guide reports rather than settles. Side-by-side pages put the published facts of two models from this category in one place.

Compare the published specs

The main figures stated in each golf rangefinder guide on this page, side by side, with each guide's sources behind them. Units are as published; nothing here was measured by us.

A table scrolls sideways when it is wider than the screen.

— means the guide does not state that figure. n/a means the figure does not apply to that model. “or” means the guide states more than one figure, for example where two sources disagree, for different modes or versions, or where a kit includes two tools; open the guide to see which applies. † means the guide reports that another source gives a different figure, or doubts the figure; open the guide.

A figure in another unit is shown as the guide gives it and is not sorted or counted. Only single figures in the column’s unit, with no mark, word or note in brackets, are sorted and counted below.

By the numbers

These cover only the 12 golf rangefinders on this site, not the whole market. Ranges use the figures the guides state; the lowest and highest link to their guides, and the median is the middle of those figures. A model whose figure is missing, not applicable, more than one, marked, in words, in another unit or qualified in brackets is left out of that line.
