Best electric lawn mowers: match the deck and battery kit to your yard

Size the deck and battery kit to your yard

Choose the battery system first, then the deck. A cordless mower runs on its maker's own batteries: EGO says its mower works with all EGO 56V batteries. The volt figure names each maker's battery system; on its own it does not tell you run time. EGO lists its 6.0Ah pack at 336 Wh, which is 56 V × 6.0 Ah (our arithmetic); the Greenworks pages we read give volts and amp-hours only. Compare the kit instead: how many batteries come in the box, the maker's run-time claim and the recharge time.

Run time and acreage are maker claims, not yard tests. Deck width still sets how many passes you make: a 21-inch deck is about 31% wider than a 16-inch one, and a 25-inch deck about 19% wider than a 21-inch one (our arithmetic). The four picks below are electric; the gas mowers on this page are outside this section.

A small yard on foot: Greenworks 40V 16-inch push (25322)

A 16-inch push mower with a 4.0Ah battery and charger, mulching or rear bagging, five cutting heights and 37.8 lb. Greenworks claims up to 40 minutes and a 120-minute recharge; its page says up to a third of an acre in one place and a quarter in its spec table. The motor is not brushless and the deck is hardened plastic. The page lists a three-year tool and battery warranty; the manual gives four years on the mower and two on the battery and charger.

One battery, self-propelled: EGO LM2114SP

A 21-inch self-propelled kit with one 56V 6.0Ah battery and charger. EGO lists seven cutting heights from 1.25 to 4 inches, mulching, bagging or side discharge, a two-bushel bag and IPX4-rated construction, with five years on the tool and three on the battery. EGO claims up to 50 minutes, but its manual gives about 50 at light load, 40 at medium and 25 at heavy load, and only one battery is in the kit. The manual is written for the tool-only LM2110SP, so use it with this kit.

Two batteries, three-quarters of an acre: Greenworks 60V 21-inch self-propelled (MO60L424)

Two 4.0Ah batteries and a dual-port charger. Greenworks claims up to an hour on both batteries and up to three-quarters of an acre, with 80 minutes to recharge both. It has a stamped steel deck, seven heights from 1.3 to 4.0 inches, and a four-year warranty on the mower and batteries. It weighs 65 lb before the batteries go in, per the manual, so check that you can lift it into a car or shed.

The widest deck: Greenworks 60V 25-inch dual blade (MO60L427)

A 25-inch, two-blade self-propelled kit with two 4.0Ah batteries and a dual-port charger. Greenworks claims up to an hour and up to an acre, with an 80-minute recharge. Greenworks lists mulch, bag and turbo leaf pickup, with no side discharge, and the manual gives 70.6 lb without batteries. The page lists a four-year warranty on the mower and batteries.

What to check before buying

The lawn mower guides here span battery and gas walk-behind mowers. They read each runtime claim with the battery it assumes, count the packs in the kit and quote charge times, and compare cutting heights, clipping modes and weights across the maker's page, manual and listing. Warranty terms, including what a gas engine's separate cover means, are noted too.

This page collects 14 lawn mower guides from Plain Buy Guides. Each guide covers one exact Amazon listing: the maker's published specifications, what the listing says is included, the fit and installation limits that decide whether it suits you, and the main caveat, with every source listed and dated. Nothing here is based on hands-on testing, and no guide promises a price or stock level.

In the table above, the Best for column says who each model suits, and the strength and caveat columns carry the first point each guide makes. Open a guide before buying to confirm the exact model, the included parts and any conflict between the listing and the maker's documents, which each guide reports rather than settles. Side-by-side pages put the published facts of two models from this category in one place.

Compare the published specs

The main figures stated in each lawn mower guide on this page, side by side, with each guide's sources behind them. Units are as published; nothing here was measured by us.

A table scrolls sideways when it is wider than the screen.

— means the guide does not state that figure. n/a means the figure does not apply to that model. “or” means the guide states more than one figure, for example where two sources disagree, for different modes or versions, or where a kit includes two tools; open the guide to see which applies. † means the guide reports that another source gives a different figure, or doubts the figure; open the guide.

A figure in another unit is shown as the guide gives it and is not sorted or counted. Only single figures in the column’s unit, with no mark, word or note in brackets, are sorted and counted below.

By the numbers

These cover only the 14 lawn mowers on this site, not the whole market. Ranges use the figures the guides state; the lowest and highest link to their guides, and the median is the middle of those figures. A model whose figure is missing, not applicable, more than one, marked, in words, in another unit or qualified in brackets is left out of that line.
