Impact driver vs impact wrench: choose for the fastener
Choose an impact driver when your main work is driving screws with hex-shank bits. Choose an impact wrench when your main work is turning larger nuts and bolts with sockets. Start with the fastener, required tightening specification and access around it, then check the exact tool and accessories.
Both deliver repeated rotational impacts. The usual difference is a driver's ¼-inch hex bit holder versus a wrench's square socket drive. There are exceptions: Bosch's GDX18V-285 accepts both bits and sockets directly. A drive that fits an accessory does not by itself establish enough power for a job.

Choose by the fasteners you work with
| Main work | Start with | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Driving screws for shelving, framing or other assembly | Impact driver | Correct hex-shank bit, speed control and the fastener's instructions. Maximum advertised torque is not a useful target for every screw. |
| Removing or fitting larger nuts and bolts | Impact wrench | Square-drive size, appropriate impact sockets, access, and the specified final tightening torque. |
| Wheel lugs, especially seized or previously over-tightened ones | A suitably specified impact wrench | A small wrench can still be insufficient. Neither drive size nor a maximum breakaway rating guarantees removal from your vehicle. |
| Frequent work with both hex bits and sockets | Check a dedicated hybrid or two separate tools | Bosch's GDX18V-285 has both holders. Evaluate its actual kit batteries and published limits; its hybrid design is not a promise of high-torque wrench performance. |
| Mostly drilling holes or delicate screw fastening | Check a drill/driver and its clutch first | These impact tools are not automatically the right first purchase. Read the current drill and combo-kit guides. |
Torque figures are not a tightening setting
Read the units before comparing tools: 12 inch-pounds equal one foot-pound. Converting units does not make two tools' ratings directly comparable. Fastening torque, breakaway torque and different battery/test conditions describe different things.
DEWALT's DCF900 manual gives separate maximum fastening and breakaway ratings and says to check fastening torque with a torque wrench. Its speed modes and Precision Wrench control do not replace the specified final torque check. A mode intended to reduce over-tightening is not a calibrated stop at your chosen foot-pound value.
For lug nuts, DEWALT's support guidance warns that a hex impact driver or smaller impact wrench may not loosen them, especially when seized or previously installed with a pneumatic wrench. We have not tested removal on your vehicle. Check the vehicle's service instructions, correct socket and required final torque instead of buying from a generic “will remove any lug nut” claim.
A hex-to-square adapter changes the accessory connection; it does not turn a driver into a high-torque wrench. Use only accessories approved for the particular tool and impact use. Bosch and DEWALT explicitly require suitable impact sockets/accessories in the manuals read here.
Compare the complete setup and access
- For screws: the driver, compatible battery and charger, and the correct bits or bit holder. Confirm the exact shank and retention requirements; SKIL's ID6720B manual specifies bits with power grooves.
- For nuts and bolts: the wrench, its battery and charger, impact sockets with the correct square drive and fastener size, and a torque wrench for the final check where specified. None of the three package lists below includes a socket set or torque wrench.
- For existing batteries: verify the actual platform and permitted packs. A similar voltage label does not establish compatibility. A bare tool and a kit with batteries are different purchases.
- For tight spaces: measure the whole working combination, including the fitted socket or bit and battery. Extra power is not useful if that setup cannot reach the fastener.
Compare what you need to add rather than a fixed price gap between tool types. Seller prices change, and owning suitable batteries can change the total. A two-tool kit is useful only if you need both tools; it can be unnecessary spending when you already have a suitable drill.
Three exact packages to check next
These are buying examples, not a tested ranking or a guarantee of a particular job result. Two route to existing full model guides; the dedicated wrench links to the exact Amazon kit after the package checks below.
Driver route: SKIL CB8002B-10 drill and impact kit
SKIL's kit page names the DL6280B drill driver, ID6720B ¼-inch hex impact driver, one BY519701 2.0Ah battery, SC535801 charger and two PH2 bits. The catch is one shared battery for two tools, with no spare to charge while using the other. It is a drill-and-driver package, not a dedicated socket wrench kit.

Hybrid route: Bosch GXL18V-241B22 combo kit
Bosch pairs the GSB18V-65 hammer drill with the GDX18V-285 impact driver/wrench, two 2Ah batteries, a charger, two belt clips and a bag. The impact tool has a ¼-inch hex holder and ½-inch square drive with friction ring, so it accepts compatible bits or sockets without a hex-to-square adapter.
The important catch is the battery behind the ratings: the manual gives the GDX18V-285 210 ft-lb maximum torque and 368 ft-lb breakaway with a fully charged 12Ah battery. This kit includes 2Ah packs. Bosch's kit page prints different torque figures without naming a test battery. Do not treat the larger-pack manual ratings as demonstrated output from the included packs.

Dedicated wrench route: DEWALT DCF900P1 kit
This is a ½-inch hog-ring impact wrench kit rather than a screw-driving combo. DEWALT's included-parts list names the DCF900 wrench, one DCB205 5.0Ah battery, DCB115 charger and kit bag. The exact Amazon listing names DCF900P1 with a battery and charger; its shorter components list omits the bag, while its title names one. Confirm the complete package before ordering.
DEWALT's page and Type 1 manual claim up to 1,030 ft-lb fastening and 1,400 ft-lb breakaway torque. Those are manufacturer maximum figures, not measured results from our use or a final tightening setting. The manual requires impact accessories and a torque-wrench check. Buy compatible sockets separately; this package is not a complete wheel-service set.
Both the manufacturer page and Amazon bullets also contain a generic “battery sold separately” line beside the included kit battery. The DCF900P1 included-parts lists, rather than that copied feature sentence or the bare-tool DCF900B name, identify the package linked here.

Common questions
Can I use an impact driver with sockets?
Some drivers accept a suitable socket adapter, subject to their instructions. That changes the connection, not the tool's available power or intended use. A dedicated hybrid such as the Bosch GDX18V-285 has its own square drive as well as a hex bit holder; check its exact limits.
Will any half-inch impact wrench remove lug nuts?
No. Half-inch describes the socket drive, not a removal guarantee. DEWALT warns that smaller wrenches may be insufficient for seized or heavily tightened wheel fasteners. Choose against the actual application and follow the vehicle's service and final-torque instructions.
Is a higher torque number always better?
No. Check whether the number is fastening or breakaway torque, its units and the battery/test conditions. Then consider the fastener, access and control you need. Maximum power does not replace the specified tightening torque or make a wrench appropriate for every screw.
Should I buy a combo kit or a bare tool?
A combo can suit a buyer who needs both tools and its exact batteries. A bare tool can suit an owner of compatible permitted packs and a charger. Count the missing bits, sockets and any required torque wrench, and do not assume the words “kit” or “two-in-one” cover every accessory or job.
