Cooling, heat, and a second capacity figure that changes by source
The BPACT14HWT is BLACK+DECKER's heat-equipped 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) single-hose portable air conditioner. The manual's catalog list names it alongside five sibling models, and marks the heat mode as available on BPACT12HWT and BPACT14HWT only. It cools, dehumidifies, runs as a fan and heats.
The lower rating differs by source. BLACK+DECKER's own page titles it 7,700 BTU (14,000 BTU ASHRAE). The Amazon listing gives 10,200 BTU SACC in its title, bullets and table. Heating output is 10,000 BTU in the listing's bullets and table but 12,000 BTU in its title. None of the manual pages we read gives a capacity figure.
The manual's room-size guide says 14,000 BTU is for rooms up to 700 square feet, and the listing repeats 700 in its title and bullets; its details table says 375 square feet. The manual's figure comes from its room-size table.
A narrow cooling range, and a thermostat that reaches further
The manual's operating-conditions table lists Cool mode for room temperatures of 64 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit, Dehumidify for 64 to 95 degrees, and Heat for 45 to 81 degrees on the two heat models.
The thermostat itself can be set from 61 to 88 degrees in both Cool and Heat, according to the remote-control and heat sections of the same manual. The manual does not explain how the 61 to 88 degree set range relates to its 64 to 76 degree operating range for cooling.
Sleep mode moves the set point gradually: in Cool it rises two degrees after an hour and four after two hours, and in Heat it falls by the same steps. The timer sets an automatic start or stop in one-hour steps up to 24 hours. After stopping, the compressor cannot restart for three minutes.
Single hose in every mode except Fan, including heat
The exhaust hose and its inlet stay connected in Cool, Dehumidify and Heat, and are removed only in Fan mode. The hose outlet and inlet come pre-assembled to the hose. The manual says the hose should be kept as short as possible.
In the box, per the manual's parts page: the unit on four casters, the exhaust hose, a window bracket, a foam seal, two locking screws, a 3.3-foot drain hose and a remote. BLACK+DECKER's page lists a kit that includes a full function remote. The remote needs two AAA batteries, which the manual says are not included, and works within about 23 feet.
The manual gives window openings from 26.5 inches (67.5 cm) to 48.4 inches (123 cm) and lists the tools needed to fit the kit. The listing's table shows 20.5 to 49 inches and several other opening fields that do not match either figure.
Clearance: twelve inches in one place, eighty centimetres in another
The manual's safety guidelines ask for an air path of at least 12 inches all around the unit from walls, furniture and curtains. Its installation guide says the required distance around should be at least 80 cm, roughly 31 inches, and at least 50 cm above. The manual does not reconcile the two.
Electrical rules are firm. Use a properly grounded three-prong outlet and never an adapter or extension cord. The manual describes the unit as rated under 15 amps on a nominal 120-volt circuit, and fits an LCDI plug that it asks you to test before each use; it says the plug is not an on-off switch and a damaged cord cannot be repaired.
The manual rules out wet rooms and spots near a bathtub, shower or wash basin. It asks for a firm, level floor, caution when rolling on carpet, nothing placed on top, and the unit never run without its filter.
Draining, and the E2 and E4 codes
The manual describes auto water evaporation and says to drain the unit at the end of the season. Its operating and dehumidifying pages list E2 and E4 display codes alongside the drain instructions, and its drain section describes how the tank is emptied.
It describes both an occasional drain and a continuous drain through the supplied hose. Dehumidify mode drains from a separate cap at the back centre, and the manual recommends continuous drainage in that mode.
The manual's troubleshooting page lists E0, E1 and E3 as further display codes. It also says never to turn the unit off by unplugging it, and to check that the rear drain plug is in place before switching on.
Weekly filter cleaning, labels that disagree, and the warranty
The manual asks for the filter to be cleaned every week of operation and for the cabinet to be wiped with a damp cloth. It also says never to run the unit without its filter, and to drain it at the end of the season.
Several labels do not agree. BLACK+DECKER's page names R410a refrigerant, while the listing's table shows both R-32 and R410a. BLACK+DECKER gives 28.1 by 13.8 by 17.1 inches and 35 pounds; the listing gives 27.09 by 14.06 by 16.5 inches and also 35 pounds. The listing advertises Wi-Fi and voice control, which neither BLACK+DECKER's page nor the manual pages we read mention.
The manual's warranty, from W Appliance Co., covers the original purchaser for one year labour and one year parts, plus a total of five years on the compressor part only; BLACK+DECKER's page states the same terms. The manual also lists exclusions; read them before relying on the compressor term. The manual asks for dated proof of purchase, model and serial number.
