What to check before buying
The portable air conditioner guides here put the ASHRAE figure next to the lower DOE or SACC figure wherever a maker or listing gives both, since titles often lead with the larger one. They compare window-kit ranges in the manual and listing, quote the clearance and outlet rules, explain how each unit drains, and give the room temperatures the manual says Cool mode works in.
- ASHRAE vs DOE figure. Two capacity numbers are common. Guides report 12,000 BTU ASHRAE against 7,000 SACC, a DOE figure published as 5,500, 5,550 or 6,300 for one unit, and listing titles that lead with a larger number than the maker's DOE figure.
- Window kit range. Check the kit against your window opening. Guides report manual and maker page giving 46 and 56 inch maximums, a listing range of 26.5-48 inches against the manual's 19.4-62.2, and one manual with two ranges on different pages.
- Clearance and outlet. Required space ranges from 12 inches to 36 inches around the unit, and one manual asks for 31.5 inches front and back. Several manuals rule out extension cords and shared outlets, and one asks for a separate 15-amp circuit.
- How water drains. Guides report units that stop cooling until an internal tank is emptied, a drain hose sold separately, Dry mode needing a hose led to a lower drain, a Dry-mode pump rated to 6 feet, and a manual pump that belongs to a different model.
- Room temperature range. Manuals set the room temperatures Cool mode works in. Two 14,000 BTU models list Cool only up to a 76°F room, while others give 60 or 64 to 95°F, or 61 to 86°F.
