Space heaters for a large room: what one 1,500-watt heater can do
A bigger room does not get a bigger plug-in heater
Every full-size heater in our guides tops out at 1,500 watts on a standard 120-volt outlet. (The one exception is a 200-watt personal desk heater.) At that setting a heater turns its power into roughly 5,100 BTU of heat per hour (one watt is about 3.41 BTU per hour); Dr. Heater lists its DR-968 at 5,200 BTU. Oil-filled, infrared and ceramic describe how the heat reaches you, not a larger output, and a “large room” label cannot change that number.
So choose by how you will use the room: steady warmth for a long evening, a thermostat that holds a set temperature, or air moved around a wide space. The three models below suit those jobs. None replaces a working central heating system in a large, drafty room.
Quiet, steady heat for long evenings: De'Longhi TRD40615E Dragon
A sealed oil-filled radiator that De'Longhi describes as quiet, with three power levels up to 1,500 watts, a digital thermostat from 50 to 82 °F, an ECO mode, a 41 °F anti-freeze setting, a 24-hour timer and wheels for its roughly 26 pounds. De'Longhi itself says it is only suitable for well-insulated spaces or occasional use, so treat it as warmth for the part of the room you use. It needs three feet clear in front and above and no other appliance on its circuit. The manual and the listing disagree on the warranty length.

A thermostat with a blower: Dr Infrared DR-968
A cabinet heater with a fan, 1,500 watts on HIGH and 1,000 on LOW. Its ECO mode switches between the two to hold a set temperature from 50 to 85 °F. It has a remote, a 12-hour timer, and documented overheat, blocked-inlet and tip-over cut-offs. In standby it briefly runs the element and fan every five minutes to read the room, and the manual says two of these heaters must not share a circuit. Sources list its weight at 19 to 23.5 pounds.

A tall oscillating tower: Pelonis PHF15RSAPH30
A 30-inch ceramic tower with 900 and 1,500-watt settings, oscillation, a remote, a tip-over switch and a shut-off after 15 hours with no button pressed. It holds a set temperature (41 to 95 °F) only in ECO mode, and its manual warns that its temperature control is not accurate. It needs a wall outlet on a circuit with nothing else running.

Before adding heat to a big room
- Two heaters need two circuits. A 1,500-watt heater draws about 12.5 amps at 120 volts. Two on the same 15- or 20-amp circuit exceed it. Find out which outlets share a breaker before adding a second heater.
- Plug straight into the wall. The CPSC says to plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip.
- Keep three feet clear and switch off to sleep. The CPSC advises three feet from drapes, furniture and bedding, and turning heaters off when sleeping. Some manuals here also require clearance above or behind the heater.

What to check before buying
The space heater guides here list each heater's watt settings and how its thermostat actually behaves on each setting. They quote the clearance, outlet and circuit rules from the manual, record which shut-off features the maker documents and which it does not claim, and compare the warranty length in the manual with the one on the listing.
- Watt settings. Most heaters here reach 1,500 W at most, with one or two lower steps, such as 700 and 800 W or 1,000 and 1,300 W. One personal heater has a single fixed 200 W output with no settings at all.
- How the thermostat works. Several tower heaters hold a set temperature only on High, so Low runs without one. Guides also report a heater with no thermostat or timer, and a manual that gives a set point for ECO mode only and says control is not accurate.
- Clearance and outlet rules. Every manual here asks for 3 feet clear in front, some also above or behind. Several rule out extension cords and power strips, some ask for a circuit with nothing else on it, and two bar rooms under 43 sq ft.
- Documented shut-offs. The guides record which protections each maker documents: some list a tip-over switch and overheat cut-off, others claim overheat protection only, and one manual says an overheat shutdown must be reset by a service centre.
- Warranty by source. Two guides report a one-year warranty in the manual against three years on the listing. Others note a mail-back registration form, a three-year term that needs a return authorisation, and a buyer paying shipping both ways.
