Breville Barista Express BES870XL Espresso Machine

An integrated grinder with manual espresso preparation and milk

Consider the BES870XL if you want the grinder and machine together while retaining manual grind adjustment, tamping and milk texturing. It includes four basket options and programmed or manual shot control. This is not the assisted-tamping Impress model. Confirm the exact unit's electrical rating and dimensions because current primary documentation conflicts.

An integrated grinder, not an automatic latte machine

The brushed-stainless BES870XL combines a conical burr grinder with an espresso machine. It is the Barista Express, not the separate Barista Express Impress model. Breville lists sixteen external grind settings, an adjustable grind-amount control, a removable manual tamper and a manual steam wand. Do not assume an assisted tamping lever, a built-in dose scale or automatic milk temperature controls from another model in the range.

The actual instruction book describes automatic-stop grinding triggered at the cradle and a hold-to-grind manual option. You still distribute the grounds, tamp them, trim if appropriate, move the portafilter to the group head and texture milk yourself. Consider the integrated layout if keeping the grinder and machine together suits your routine; a separate grinder remains a different setup choice, not a required accessory for this package.

Four baskets give you two preparation routes

Breville lists a 54-millimeter stainless-steel portafilter with one-cup and two-cup baskets in both single-wall and dual-wall designs. The inspected manual uses single-wall baskets for freshly ground whole beans and dual-wall baskets for pre-ground coffee. The basket choice does not eliminate the need to adjust the grind and amount for the coffee you use.

The current package also lists a dosing funnel, Razor trimming tool, manual tamper and milk jug. The manual shows the funnel being used during grinding and tamping, then removed before the portafilter goes into the group head. That is a workflow detail worth checking before buying extra accessories. We have not tested third-party portafilter compatibility or measured the consistency of the grinder's delivered dose.

Choose the controls with realistic expectations

This model uses a Thermocoil heating system with PID temperature control, unlike the Bambino's ThermoJet system. It provides one-cup and two-cup programmed volumes, manual override and an extraction pressure gauge. The manual discusses preheating cups and the portafilter and allows temperature adjustments through its specified control sequence. These are tools for a hands-on workflow, not a guarantee of a particular flavor or a diagnosis from the gauge alone.

Breville describes low-pressure pre-infusion followed by nine-bar extraction from a fifteen-bar pump. Those are different parts of the maker's description, not competing quality scores. The current panel lists a half-pound bean hopper and a 67-ounce water tank. Allow access to refill both, remove the drip tray and move the jug around the steam wand rather than treating the bare footprint as all the space you need.

Backflush cleaning and descaling are different jobs

The actual BES870 instruction book distinguishes a flashing CLEAN/DESCALE indicator for the cleaning cycle from a solid indicator for descaling. Its cleaning cycle uses the specified filter basket, cleaning disc and tablet; descaling addresses mineral buildup through a separate procedure and rinse. Read the complete instructions for the exact supplied machine instead of assuming one routine replaces the other.

The inspected manual's preparation section tells users to hand-wash parts and accessories and not put them in a dishwasher. Breville's product page separately calls the dosing funnel dishwasher-safe. That accessory-specific marketing statement should not be extended to the portafilter or entire kit; follow the instructions supplied with the exact accessory and machine revision. Regular care does not establish that a brewing fault is repaired, and this guide does not diagnose internal problems.

Resolve the rating and dimension conflicts before relying on them

Breville's current BES870XL product panel lists 1,600 watts, but the maker-linked BES870 instruction book inspected for this guide shows a 1,750-watt rating. Both are presented as US model documentation; the inspected sources do not explain the difference. Confirm the rating label and documentation of the unit you receive. We do not choose a figure by guessing a revision or use either number to predict extraction performance.

Amazon gives dimensions of 13.8 inches deep, 12.5 wide and 15.9 high. The maker's current panel labels its width-by-depth-by-height figures as 15.9 by 13.1 by 12.4 inches. Because the labels and values disagree, confirm the assembled unit before a tight-space purchase rather than silently swapping dimensions. The maker currently states a one-year limited warranty; check regional terms and the actual seller's offer before relying on coverage.
