Espresso machines for beginners: choose your daily routine
Three starting points for a first espresso setup
Choose how much work you want to do each morning. A built-in grinder saves a separate purchase; it does not make every machine automatic. These three options differ most in grinding, tamping and milk preparation.
Choose a separate grinder: Breville Bambino BES450
The Bambino has no built-in grinder and its steam wand is manual. It suits someone who wants to choose or upgrade a grinder separately and learn milk texturing. Budget for an espresso-capable grinder if using whole beans. Breville supplies single- and dual-wall baskets; follow its basket guidance for fresh-ground versus pre-ground coffee. This is the Bambino, not the Bambino Plus.

Grinder included, hands-on preparation: Breville Barista Express BES870XL
The Barista Express combines a burr grinder and espresso machine. You still adjust the grind, tamp the grounds and steam the milk manually. Choose it if you want the grinder in one appliance and are willing to learn those steps. This model is not the Express Impress, which has a different tamping system.

More guidance for dosing and milk: Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601
The ES601 has a built-in grinder, weight-based dosing and programmed milk frothing, alongside espresso, drip coffee and cold-brew modes. It suits a household wanting several drinks and more guidance. You still move the portafilter and use the separate assisted tamper. Guided does not mean one-touch: expect preparation and cleaning between drinks.

What to budget for before ordering
- The full setup. Include a grinder where needed and leave counter space to fill the tank and empty the tray.
- Daily care. Empty used grounds, clean the milk system and follow the model's cleaning and descaling instructions. Automatic frothing still needs cleaning.
- Your drink. For milk drinks, compare manual versus programmed frothing first. For hands-on espresso, decide whether you want a separate grinder.
These are workflow choices based on published features, not a taste test. Sources checked September 27, 2026: Breville Bambino (breville.com), Breville Barista Express (breville.com), Ninja ES601 (sharkninja.com). Amazon links are affiliate links.

What to check before buying
The espresso guides here cover manual and semi-automatic machines, bean-to-cup models and standalone grinders. They set out which steps stay in your hands, how milk is handled, and how each grinder sets dose and grind. They also quote the manual's cleaning and descaling rules, note warranty seller conditions, and flag where wattage or tank size differ between sources.
- Which steps stay manual. Check how much of the shot you do yourself. Guides separate machines with no grinder, integrated grinders with manual dosing and tamping, assisted tamping whose rules change with drink size, and fully automatic brew units.
- How milk is handled. Milk options differ widely. Guides report hand-steamed wands, carafes that need cleaning after each use, models with no milk container in the box, cold foam sold as a separate accessory, and machines that cannot hot-froth or steam while brewing.
- Grind and dose control. Grinders set dose by time, by weight or by hand. The guides give grind steps per click and cup sizes for hand grinders, note timed dosing that does not weigh, and quote pre-ground limits of one scoop per cup.
- Cleaning and descaling rules. Two manuals allow no removable part in the dishwasher, burrs must not be washed with water, and some brew units need regular greasing. Guides also report descaling limited to the maker's own solution.
- Figures that disagree. Wattage, tank size and dimensions can change from one source to the next for the same machine. Guides report 1,600 W against 1,750 W, 1,450 W against 1,250 W, and two reservoir sizes for one machine.
This page collects 43 espresso machine and grinder guides from Plain Buy Guides. Each guide covers one exact Amazon listing: the maker's published specifications, what the listing says is included, the fit and installation limits that decide whether it suits you, and the main caveat, with every source listed and dated. Nothing here is based on hands-on testing, and no guide promises a price or stock level.
In the table above, the Best for column says who each model suits, and the strength and caveat columns carry the first point each guide makes. Open a guide before buying to confirm the exact model, the included parts and any conflict between the listing and the maker's documents, which each guide reports rather than settles. Side-by-side pages put the published facts of two models from this category in one place.
