An 8,000 BTU DOE unit for rooms up to 350 square feet

GE rates the APHS08WWF at 8,000 BTU under the DOE SACC method and pitches it for medium rooms up to 350 square feet; the listing repeats both figures. The owner's manual covers two models, APHS07 and APHS08, and advises making sure the unit's BTU rating is adequate for the room.

GE's specification block lists 1,100 watts, 10 amps, 115 volts at 60 Hz, R32 refrigerant, and sound levels of 50 and 55 dBA. It gives the unit as 27.76 inches tall, 16.61 wide and 13.19 deep, with a net weight of 65.99 pounds; the listing says 66 pounds. The exhaust hose is five feet long and the power cord at least six feet.

It is a single-hose unit as sold. GE's page says it can be converted to dual-hose operation with a RAP04 kit, sold separately. The listing's details table calls the product a window air conditioner in one field, which does not match GE's own description of it as a portable model.

Four modes, a delay timer and the SmartHQ app

The manual lists four modes: Cool, Fan, Dry and Quiet. Fan speeds are Low, Medium, High and Auto, and the manual notes they do not apply in Dry. Quiet mode sets the fan automatically, and changing the fan speed in Quiet puts the unit back into Cool. The manual notes a delay of about three minutes before the compressor starts.

A delay timer can switch the unit on or off after one to 24 hours. After a power cut it restarts on its last settings, though a delay set before the outage has to be set again. A filter light comes on after 250 hours of running, and the display turns off after one minute.

GE's page lists built-in Wi-Fi through the SmartHQ app and voice control through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The remote comes with two AAA batteries, according to the manual's parts list. GE's specification block gives the operating temperature range as 61 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Auto evaporation, and when the tank still fills

GE's page says the unit is self-evaporative and that most room conditions need no manual draining; the listing also describes auto evaporation with no draining needed. The manual still covers an internal water tank. When it fills, the display shows FL and the unit will not cool until the tank has been emptied.

For emptying the internal tank, the manual calls for a pan of at least 1.5 quarts, which is not included. GE's specification block also lists a continuous condensate drain and an external drain connector, and the manual says continuous draining is optional, only for Dry mode, and uses a garden-hose connection.

The manual warns that the unit will not shut itself off when an external container fills during continuous draining, and it calls for a container of three gallons or more. It also says that in Dry mode the exhaust hose should not be attached to the window, and windows and doors should be closed.

Window size: GE prints two ranges

The manual's location page says the window panel fits openings from 20 to 46 inches. Its window-kit page gives a kit length range of 20 to 48 inches. The listing says 19 to 48 inches wide and at least 6.3 inches high. The manual does not reconcile its two figures.

GE's page describes a no-cut window kit. The manual does allow the slider with the hose hole to be cut, and its parts list includes foam seals, four slider screws, a window lock bracket, a drain hose and the remote's batteries.

The manual estimates installation at about an hour, says it needs basic mechanical skills and recommends two people. It also notes that product failure from improper installation is not covered under the warranty.

Thirty inches of space, a wall outlet and nothing on top

The manual asks for the unit to sit 20 inches from the exterior wall, with at least 30 inches of space on all other sides. Both figures come from the manual's location page, which also gives the 20 to 46 inch window range discussed below.

The manual calls for a grounded three-prong outlet and rules out adapters and extension cords. GE's spec block gives the plug as a 120-volt, 15-amp NEMA 5-15 type. The cord has a current-interrupter device with TEST and RESET buttons that the manual asks you to test periodically, and pressing the power button does not disconnect the unit from the supply.

The unit uses a flammable A2L refrigerant, so the manual asks that it be stored in a room without continuously operating ignition sources and that it not be drilled. We do not reproduce the rest of the manual's safety text; read it before installing.

Filters every two weeks, and a one-year warranty

The manual asks for the air filters to be cleaned at least every two weeks. For cleaning it calls for a soft cloth and water only, and it lists cleaning products that must not be used.

The manual's error codes are E1, EP and FL, with FL meaning the internal tank is full. The manual's safety page says servicing should be done only by qualified service personnel; the same page also states that GE Appliances does not support any servicing of the air conditioner.

The manual's limited warranty runs one year from the original purchase, for the original purchaser and later owners, for home use in the USA. GE will replace, repair or refund at its discretion; during the retailer's return period the claim goes back to the store, and after that through GE at 800-432-2737. GE's specification block describes the terms as no labour warranty and a limited one-year exchange-only parts warranty.
