What this thermostat is, and the model numbers involved

The RTH6580WF is Honeywell Home's Wi-Fi 7-day programmable thermostat with a backlit LCD, which you can also control from a phone app. The Amazon listing gives the model as RTH6580WF1001/W1 with part number RTH6580WF1001, while Honeywell Home's product page lists the SKU as RTH6580WF1001/U1. The user guide Honeywell links from that page is titled for the RTH6500WF Smart Series, RTH65801006.

Honeywell's product page, the listing and the user guide give the same box contents: the thermostat, a wallplate already attached to it, screws and anchors, a quick start guide, a thermostat ID card, wire labels, the user guide and a quick reference card. Honeywell lists the unit at 3.5 x 5.75 x 1.5 inches, which matches the listing's 3.5-inch height, 5.75-inch width and 1.5-inch depth.

The C wire is not optional on this model

The quick start guide says plainly that a C wire is required and is the thermostat's primary power source, and that without a C wire the thermostat will not power up. The user guide says the C wire brings 24 VAC, and its glossary adds that the C wire is also needed for the Wi-Fi connection. The listing's compatibility bullet agrees: C-wire required.

The user guide notes that older mechanical or battery-operated thermostats may not have a C wire. If yours has none, the guide points you to Honeywell's alternate wiring videos and to your equipment manual to find the 24 VAC common. Check this before buying rather than after; we do not give wiring steps here.

One listing detail does not match: the Amazon item details show two AA batteries as required. The user guide pages we read mention batteries only when describing older battery-operated thermostats, and the quick start guide names the C wire as the primary power source. Neither document explains the battery field, so confirm with Honeywell if it matters to you.

Which heating and cooling systems it runs

The quick start guide says the thermostat works with 24 volt systems such as forced air, hydronic, heat pump, oil, gas and electric, and will not work with millivolt systems such as a gas fireplace, or with 120/240 volt systems such as baseboard electric heat. The listing repeats the baseboard exclusion and names forced air, hot water, steam and heat pumps with electric backup.

Honeywell's specification block lists up to 2 heat and 2 cool stages on conventional systems and up to 3 heat and 2 cool on heat pump systems. The guide's system-type menu offers heat and cool, heat only, heat only with fan, cool only, heat pump with or without backup heat, and three multistage conventional combinations up to 2 heat and 2 cool; it gives no separate stage count for heat pumps.

The user guide says the thermostat ships set for a single-stage system, and that a multistage, heat pump, hydronic or other system must be set in the installer functions so that the thermostat operates properly and does not damage your system. It also tells you not to run the air conditioner when the outside temperature is below 50°F (10°C), and links that instruction to the compressor.

Wi-Fi setup and the app you will use

Honeywell lists the Wi-Fi as 802.11b, g and n in the 2.4 GHz range. Setup in the user guide is browser-based: the thermostat broadcasts its own network and setup is finished on a web page, after which you register the thermostat at Total Connect Comfort for remote access. The guide recommends a tablet or laptop for this step; its full sequence is in the guide.

Honeywell's product page says it works with the Total Connect Comfort app and names Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant as compatible platforms. The listing bullet also offers the Honeywell Home app and names Microsoft Cortana; Honeywell's page does not mention either, and neither source explains the difference.

The guide's FAQ says the thermostat operates with or without Wi-Fi. Its error codes cover the router losing power, an invalid Wi-Fi password, no IP address from the router, no internet connection and a general error, so the guide is the place to look if the connection fails.

Scheduling and day-to-day behaviour

It is a 7-day programmable thermostat with four periods per day, pre-set to Wake, Leave, Return and Sleep times and temperatures. The guide's defaults are 70, 62, 70 and 62°F for heat and 78, 85, 78 and 82°F for cool. A temporary change lasts until the next period; Hold keeps a setting permanently. Scheduling can also be switched off in the installer functions.

Honeywell's page lists accuracy within plus or minus 1°F, filter change reminders, and humidifier pad reminders through the app. The guide describes Smart Response, which the listing says learns your system's cycles; compressor protection that makes the compressor wait a few minutes before restarting; and automatic heat/cool changeover with a minimum 3-degree gap between settings.

Warranty and support

The user guide carries a one-year limited warranty from Resideo from the date of first purchase by the original purchaser. Resideo will repair or replace the product at its option. To make a claim, the guide says to return the product with dated proof of purchase to the place you bought it, or to call Resideo Customer Care.

The warranty does not cover removal or reinstallation costs, and it excludes damage that occurred while the product was in the consumer's possession. Honeywell's product page also lists the warranty as one year. A separate listing sheet notes that manufacturer warranties may not apply in every case depending on where and from whom the product was bought, so check the seller.
