Nails, magazine and power

Metabo HPT lists round-head 21 degree plastic strip nails from 2 to 3-1/2 in., .113 to .148 in. across; one line of its feature list says .149, while its spec table and the manual's nail table give .148. The manual gives a 37-nail magazine, Metabo HPT's table says up to 43 depending on the nails, and an extended magazine is optional.

Metabo HPT rates the driving energy at 120 joules and pitches it for engineered lumber such as laminated veneer lumber. It claims up to 3 nails per second; the manual's cycle rate is 1.8 to 2.7 nails per second in intermittent firing.

Firing modes and controls

The nailer starts in full sequential mode each time it is switched on, shown by a steady blue light, and each press of the mode switch moves it between sequential and contact firing, shown by a blinking blue light. The manual says to lock the trigger whenever you are not firing nails.

Depth adjusts without tools, and the LED lights the tip of the tool whenever the power is on. Metabo HPT lists a dry-fire lockout and a rafter hook. If a drive fails and the blade returns early, a misalignment indicator lights and the tool stops until you clear it.

Weight, battery life and temperature

Metabo HPT gives 8.4 lbs without the battery; the manual gives 9.7 lbs with the BSL1840M battery fitted. Metabo HPT's feature list and tool card give 500 nails per charge with the included 4.0Ah battery, while its spec table labels the 500 figure for an 18V/36V 8.0/4.0Ah battery. The manual gives about 60 minutes to charge the included battery at 68 degrees F.

The manual gives an operating range of 32 to 104 degrees F and says the tool may fail to operate outside it. When the tool is below 23 degrees F or too hot, the indicator and LED blink and the power turns off after 10 seconds until it warms up or cools down.

Nails and warranty

The manual says to use only genuine Metabo HPT nails, warning that other nails can cause malfunction or nail breakdown. It also asks for ear and head protection whenever you use the nailer.

Metabo HPT's page lists its Lifetime Lithium Ion Tool Warranty, a two-year battery warranty and a one-year charger warranty, and its specification table gives the same three terms.
