What the long model code on this listing actually spells out

Amazon lists the model and part number as 435A00-5T21-5S26-6205-4ARM-LUM-CC. Several of those fragments appear on Steelcase's own product page: 5T21 is the Licorice colour in the 3D Microknit back range and 6205 is the Black colour scheme. The listing's size field reads Carpet Casters, which matches the CC ending.

Steelcase's page describes two back styles for this chair, the original 3D Microknit back and a newer Air back in polypropylene. The Licorice code places this listing in the 3D Microknit family, which Steelcase describes as a system of flexors inside the backrest rather than a stretched panel.

The caster question the title and the details table disagree about

The Amazon title says Carpet Floors and the size field says Carpet Casters, but the same listing's item details give a surface recommendation of Hard Floor. Those two statements cannot both be guidance for the same buyer, and nothing on the page reconciles them.

The Steelcase user guide is clear about the rule behind the codes. It says the choice of caster depends on the flooring: for hard floors such as stone, wood, laminate or linoleum you select a soft caster, and on soft flooring such as carpet you select a hard caster. Steelcase's product page adds that hard casters are standard and soft dual-wheel roll-control casters are an option.

So a chair sold as the carpet version is the hard-caster build. If your room is wood or tile, this is the wrong caster for it under Steelcase's own rule, and you would be looking at the soft-caster version or a separate set of casters.

Two different weight ratings, seven years apart

The user guide packed with this chair states that the Steelcase Series 1 is tested to 300 pounds and meets ANSI BIFMA requirements. That document is dated 5/17 and carries part number 1068390001 Rev. B.

Steelcase's current product page says the Series 1 chair supports users up to 400 pounds, with the Series 1 stool rated to 300 pounds. The Amazon comparison chart on the listing also shows 400 pounds. Both documents are Steelcase's, and neither explains the difference or dates the change.

Treat this as unresolved rather than settled. If the rating is the reason you are buying, ask Steelcase which figure applies to the build shipping today, and keep the printed guide that arrives in the box, because that is the document tied to your chair.

Several of the headline adjustments are optional extras

The user guide marks the height, width, pivot and depth adjustable arms, the adjustable lumbar and the headrest each with an asterisk, and states plainly that these are optional features that may not be included in your chair. The Amazon bullet points describe optional four-dimensional arm support and an adjustable headrest in the same breath as the chair's standard features.

Steelcase's current page says four-dimensional arms are standard and adjustable lumbar comes standard, with fixed lumbar available on the 3D Microknit back only and a headrest as a field-installable option. The Amazon model code contains both 4ARM and LUM, which lines up with arms and lumbar being present on this build.

The controls that are not optional are the seat height lever, the seat depth slide and the back tension dial. The dial has three settings: an upright back lock, full recline with weight-activated tension, and full recline with weight-activated tension plus a boost, which Steelcase describes as roughly 20 percent more tension.

Setting it up, and the measurements the listing gives

Amazon's measurements table lists a seat height of 21.5 inches, a seat depth of 17.75 inches and a seat back interior height of 21.5 inches, with an item weight of 29 pounds. The same table gives two different overall figures, 31 by 28.5 by 16 inches in one field and 23.75 by 27 by 41.25 inches in another, so neither should be used for a tight measurement.

The user guide's seat depth instruction is the one worth following on day one: with your back against the chair, aim for two to three inches of space between the back of your knees and the front edge of the seat, and lift your weight out of the seat while you slide it. Steelcase also notes the chair ships ready to assemble rather than fully built.

The warranty is long, but the consumer version is a different document

Amazon's item details say 12 year manufacturer. Steelcase's product page says the chair is backed by the Steelcase Limited Lifetime Warranty and describes it as 12 years, multi-shift, 24/7, parts and labour. The user guide adds that the warranty applies to multi-shift use and that any servicing must be performed by an authorised Steelcase dealer.

The Americas warranty document we read covers Steelcase branded products for the normal expected life of the product, with seating exceptions set at 12 years for mechanisms, lumbar mechanisms, headrests, pneumatic cylinders, arm caps, foam, casters and glides. Standard textiles sit in the 12-year surfaces tier. Replacement parts are covered for two years or the balance of the original term, whichever is longer.

Two conditions deserve attention. That document carries a footnote saying it does not apply to products sold at retail to consumers, who are pointed to a separate Steelcase Limited Lifetime Consumer Warranty that we did not read. It also states that Steelcase reserves the right to reject claims for products bought from unauthorised sellers, so check who is selling the offer you pick.
