TP-Link Deco S4 AC1900 Mesh Wi-Fi System, 3-Pack
A basic whole-home mesh where Wi-Fi 5 and WPA2 are enough
Three AC1900 Wi-Fi 5 units that form one network name, with optional wired backhaul and both router and access-point modes. TP-Link's spec lists WPA and WPA2 only, no WPA3, and names no subscription for the parental controls. The listing and TP-Link disagree on how many Ethernet ports each unit has.

A Wi-Fi 5 three-pack, and the ports do not add up
This ASIN is the three-pack of the Deco S4, TP-Link's Wi-Fi 5 mesh. TP-Link's package content for the 3-pack is three Deco S4 units, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, three power adapters and a quick installation guide. Amazon's included-components field lists the same items but calls the units Deco S4R. Each unit is a tall cylinder, 6.4 by 3.6 by 3.6 inches on TP-Link's physical spec.
The two sources disagree about Ethernet. TP-Link's hardware spec and its overview both say 3 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ethernet ports per Deco unit with auto-sensing. The Amazon bullet and the product description both say each Deco S4 has 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 6 in total for a 3-pack, and Amazon's technical table lists number of ports as 6.
We found nothing in either source explaining the difference. If you are buying this because of the port count, ask TP-Link or the seller how many ports are on the units in the box you will receive before ordering.
AC1900 speeds and two different coverage claims
TP-Link's specification lists Wi-Fi 5, dual-band, with 5 GHz at 1300 Mbps (802.11ac) and 2.4 GHz at 600 Mbps (802.11n), three internal antennas per unit, 3x3 MU-MIMO and beamforming. Amazon's technical table instead gives a data transfer rate of 1200 Mbps and a maximum upstream rate of 950 Mbps, which match neither of TP-Link's band figures; it also lists nine antennas, which is three per unit across the pack.
Coverage is claimed twice at different scales. TP-Link's page says the Deco S4 gives a strong signal up to 2,100 square feet for a 1-pack, and its Wi-Fi Range row describes a 1-pack as suiting 1-2 bedroom houses. The Amazon listing says three units cover homes up to 5,500 square feet. Both figures carry TP-Link's standard footnote that actual throughput, coverage and device quantity are not guaranteed and vary with building materials, obstacles, traffic and client location.
Both sources agree on device capacity: lag-free connections for over 100 devices, again as a claim rather than a tested number. This is a Wi-Fi 5 system, so none of the Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA are listed for it.
Wired backhaul, two modes, and you still need a modem
TP-Link's Wi-Fi Range row says an optional Ethernet backhaul works together with TP-Link Mesh Technology to link Deco units, and the coverage diagram on the same page labels the wired link as optional Gigabit Ethernet backhaul. So you can run the units over Wi-Fi or wire them, with the ports counted above.
The system works as a router or as an access point; TP-Link lists both Router Mode and Access Point Mode as working modes. Amazon's table lists Access Point Mode as a special feature of this product.
It is not a modem. The listing's own bullet says the system works with internet service providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Xfinity, Spectrum, RCN, Cox, CenturyLink and Frontier, and adds in brackets that a modem is required for most internet service providers. Plan to keep the modem you own or rent.
Encryption: WPA and WPA2, with no WPA3 listed
TP-Link's security spec for the Deco S4 lists Wi-Fi encryption as WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal. WPA3 does not appear on the specification table, and the Amazon listing does not mention it either; Amazon's table gives the security protocol simply as WPS. If your household has devices or a policy that needs WPA3, this is the specification line to check before buying.
The rest of the security list is short: an SPI firewall and access control. Guest networks are provided as one 5 GHz and one 2.4 GHz network.
TP-Link's cloud service row lists OTA firmware upgrade, TP-Link ID and DDNS, so firmware updates arrive over the internet through the app rather than by manual download.
Parental controls with no subscription named
Parental controls on TP-Link's specification for this model are URL filtering and time controls. The overview panel describes user profiles for each family member with filter levels, time limits, insights and the ability to suspend connectivity. The listing describes the same thing as limiting online time and blocking inappropriate websites by profile.
Neither TP-Link's Deco S4 page nor the listing mentions HomeShield, a Pro plan or any subscription for this model, and quality of service is listed simply as QoS by Device. That is a difference worth weighing against newer Deco models, where some security features sit behind a paid tier.
Management is through the Deco app only; TP-Link's management features row names the Deco App. System requirements are Android 5.0 or later and iOS 9.0 or later, with a note that the minimum rises as the app is updated. Alexa can control some functions, and the listing gives turning guest Wi-Fi on or off as an example.
Where it can live, expanding later, and the warranty
TP-Link's environment spec gives an operating temperature of 0C to 40C (32F to 104F), storage of -40C to 60C, and operating humidity of 10% to 90% non-condensing. Certifications listed are FCC and RoHS. Software features include IPv4 and IPv6, port forwarding, UPnP, IGMP proxy and snooping, bridge and tag VLAN for IPTV, DHCP address reservation and a client list.
On expansion, TP-Link's page says simply that you can add another Deco for more coverage. The claim that all TP-Link Deco mesh units work together appears in the Amazon product description; the Deco S4 page we read does not repeat it, so confirm with TP-Link before buying a different Deco model to extend this network.
TP-Link's US warranty page lists Whole Home Wi-Fi, Mesh Wi-Fi and Deco products bought on or after 1 September 2023 at 2 years. The limited warranty covers manufacturer defects, begins when the original purchase is delivered, applies only to the original purchaser, and needs a valid proof of purchase and a complete serial number. Refurbished units, products resold by unauthorized resellers and used, as-is or open-box goods are excluded; replacements are typically factory refurbished and do not restart the warranty period. Check the seller and condition of the offer you select.
