What to check before buying
The mesh Wi-Fi guides here count the Ethernet sockets and their speeds on every unit in a kit, and note which bands each system has and how it uses them for backhaul. They compare coverage figures across the maker's own pages, list features that need a paid plan or account, and read each warranty's conditions. Most kits ship only one Ethernet cable.
- Ports per unit. Count the sockets across the whole kit and check their speed. Guides report a three-unit kit with four Ethernet sockets in total, units with gigabit ports only, a combo port that runs one side at a time, and a listing claiming a 10G port the maker does not list.
- Bands and backhaul. Several kits are dual-band with no 6 GHz radio. Where 6 GHz exists, one system uses it for backhaul by default, 320 MHz width is limited to 6 GHz and to regions that allow it, and one kit's 2.4 GHz band is 802.11n.
- Coverage by source. Coverage is rarely stated once. Guides report 8,500 sq ft on a listing against 3,300 on the maker's page, three different figures for one kit, and one maker giving both 15,000 and 2,000 sq ft for the same unit.
- Paid plans and accounts. Some features cost extra after a trial: guides name HomeShield Pro protection, NETGEAR Armor and eero Plus parental controls. Several systems also need a maker account and app before setup.
- Warranty conditions. Terms range from one to three years, and some warranty blocks print no duration. Guides report NETGEAR cover valid only through an authorised reseller and, in some documents, only after registration.
