Whynter ARC-14S 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner

Fit and limits
Strengths

Caveats

- Above 70 percent humidity the tank still fills, and draining means rolling 73 pounds to a drain
Two capacity numbers, and both are printed on the same page
Whynter's own technical data for ARC-14S gives 14,000 BTU under the ASHRAE-128 standard and 9,500 BTU under the DOE 2017 standard, which is the SACC figure. Those are two different tests, not a marketing number and a real number: SACC accounts for the heat the unit's own motor adds, for air leakage during venting and for variable room conditions. They are not interchangeable and there is no conversion between them, so we do not turn one into the other.
The coverage claim attached to this model is 500 square feet, and both the listing and Whynter's page repeat it. Whynter's own FAQ on the same page notes that a dual-hose design generally earns a higher SACC for the same ASHRAE rating, which is the most useful thing to know about why this unit is built the way it is. Treat 500 square feet as a maker claim for a reasonably insulated room, not a promise.
Everything else in the technical data is consistent between sources: 115 V, 60 Hz, single phase; maximum 1,300 watts and 11.6 amps; CEER 7.69 and EER 9.41; thermostat range 61 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit; three fan speeds; airflow 430 cubic metres an hour, which the listing states as 253 CFM; 73 pounds net.
Dual hose means two ducts to the window, and the intake one is optional
This is a true two-hose machine: separate intake and exhaust hoses, each 5.9 inches in diameter, extendable to a maximum of 60 inches. Hose connectors are 5.9 inches with a 5.0-inch reducer, and the fixture and window kit openings are 5.0 inches. Both hoses thread on counter-clockwise and snap to tabs on the back of the unit.
The manual says the intake hose is optional, and the exhaust hose itself is optional in dehumidify or fan-only mode. That matters in practice: the troubleshooting document tells dual-hose owners to remove the intake hose when outside humidity is high or it is raining, because drawing damp outdoor air in makes the unit collect water faster.
Whynter does not want the hoses lengthened. Its FAQ says extending them reduces cooling, raises compressor backpressure, can cause overheating or failure and can void the warranty; if you must, total hose length should not exceed nine feet, with no sharp bends or vertical lifts and no taped joints. Both the manual and the troubleshooting sheet repeat the nine-foot ceiling. Plan to put the unit near the window.
The window kit: two different maximum lengths in Whynter's own documents
The adjustable window kit is 6.5 inches wide and 20 inches long at minimum. Whynter's manual technical data says it extends to 46 inches maximum, and Amazon's listing bullet repeats 46 inches. Whynter's current product page says 56 inches. That is a ten-inch disagreement inside one manufacturer's own published specs, so measure your window and, if it lands between 46 and 56 inches, ask Whynter before you rely on the kit alone.
If your opening is shorter than 20 inches, both the manual and the FAQ say the panel can be cut down, from the end opposite the hose cut-out, and never through the hose cut-outs themselves. If it is longer than the kit's maximum, you need extra material such as Plexiglas, PVC or plywood, or a second kit. The window screen can stay in place. The manual also suggests screwing the kit into the window frame for a long-term install and warns that a window or sliding door left ajar may need extra security measures.
Casement windows need an aftermarket insert or a custom acrylic panel; Whynter's FAQ names a third-party partner for that rather than supplying one. Wall installation is possible using the same pre-cut panel, but the FAQ treats it as a modification you take on yourself.
Twenty inches of clearance, 15 amps, and no extension cord
The manual asks for at least 20 inches of clearance around the unit for ventilation, and says not to use it inside closets, cabinets or cramped gaps between furniture. It must stand on a hard, level surface strong enough for 73 pounds. The casters are for smooth flat floors: the manual says to use caution on carpet and not to roll over objects. Tilting more than 45 degrees when moving it is out, and after transport it must stand upright for at least four hours before it is switched on.
The power rules are strict and worth reading before you buy. The cord has a built-in LCDI plug with TEST and RESET buttons, which are not to be used as an on-off switch. Do not cut the ground prong. Do not use an extension cord or power strip; the troubleshooting sheet adds that the air conditioner should have its own dedicated wall outlet. Whynter recommends a separate 15-amp circuit for it. On 11.6 amps maximum draw, that is not a formality.
Operating range is stated twice with different numbers in Whynter's own documents. The safety section says the unit is optimised for an ambient 64 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit; the compressor lock-out section says 64 to 90; the troubleshooting sheet also says 64 to 90. The mode table gives Cool above 64 and Dry above 60. If your room routinely runs above 90, treat that as the edge of what Whynter claims. After it stops, the compressor has a three-minute delayed restart by design.
The auto-drain is real, but it has a humidity threshold
Whynter's patented self-evaporating function, in the manual's own words, fully exhausts all condensation automatically in most environments when humidity is below 70 percent. Above 70 percent it still exhausts about 98 percent, and the remaining 2 percent collects in the tank. When the tank fills, the unit stops and a red Stop light comes on; the troubleshooting sheet adds that STOP, P1 or FL on the display all mean the same thing.
Manual draining is simple but physical: switch off, roll the unit to a drain or put a flat container or the optional drain bucket under the lower drain port, pull the cover and rubber plug, let it empty, then refit both firmly. There is no condensate pump. Whynter's specification block also answers Upper Gravity Drain Port with No, while the manual's care section tells you to drain collected condensation from the upper and lower drain ports before transport. We could not reconcile those two statements from the sources read, so check which ports your unit actually has before storing it.
Dehumidifying capacity is quoted as 71 pints a day. That is a dehumidifier-scale number, which is why a very humid room is exactly where the tank starts filling and the unit starts asking to be emptied.
Filters, storage, refrigerant and the warranty conditions that catch Amazon buyers
Two filters sit in one frame: a washable pre-filter that catches dust and pet hair, and an activated carbon filter for smoke and odours. The pre-filter is washed at least every two weeks under warm running water no hotter than 100 degrees, and dried fully before it goes back. Never run the unit without the pre-filter. The carbon filter is not washable and is replaced every two to three months; an optional 3M antimicrobial filter replaces it and is changed every three months. Whynter sells the carbon replacement as ARC-CF-14S. One wrinkle: the manual's accessory list, dated 2016, shows the intake filter and 3M filter as sold separately while treating the carbon filter as included, so confirm what is in the box you receive.
The refrigerant is R-32, 16.5 ounces, and the manual carries the full flammable-refrigerant warning set: do not pierce or burn, no continuously operating ignition sources in the room, keep aerosols and pressurised containers at least 50 cm away, and leave the refrigerant circuit to certified personnel. For end-of-season storage, drain all water, clean the pre-filter, run the unit on Fan only for half a day on a warm day to dry it inside, bundle the cord, pull the remote batteries and use the supplied storage cover. Whynter also recommends an internal clean about once a year, arranged through its support address.
The warranty is one year on the unit with an additional two years on the compressor, which is where the three-year figure comes from. The conditions matter more than the length. It runs to the original owner who bought from an authorised Whynter dealer in the 48 continental states, it is not transferable, service is mail-in with a Return Authorization number issued first, and Whynter prepays return freight only within two months of purchase. Commercial or industrial use is excluded, as are products sold as-is or from an unauthorised reseller. On a marketplace listing, that makes the seller and the condition of the specific offer part of what you are buying.
