Best adjustable dumbbells: four pairs compared on range, steps and drop rules
Adjustable dumbbells: check the top weight, the step size and the drop rules first
Our nine product guides cover adjustable pairs only (eight models; the NÜOBELL 580 has two listings), so this page does not compare fixed dumbbells. One adjustable pair stands in for a rack: NÜO says its 5 to 80 lb pair replaces 16 pairs, and PowerBlock says its Elite USA 90 replaces 28. The cost is a locking mechanism. NÜO's manual warns that, unlike fixed dumbbells, adjustable ones “may suffer mechanical failure if subjected to impact.”
| Pair | Range | Steps | Set by | Drops, per the maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PowerBlock Elite USA 90 | 5 to 90 lb | 2.5 and 5 lb | Magnetic pin | Never; dropping voids the warranty |
| NÜOBELL 580 | 5 to 80 lb | 5 lb | Twist handle, in cradle | Do not drop or slam; damage not covered |
| REP QuickDraw, 60 lb size | 5 to 60 lb | 10 lb by switch; 5 lb with the two 2.5 lb plates | Switches | Occasional drops OK; drop damage not covered |
| Snode AD80 | 10 to 80 lb | 10 lb | Side dial | Claims drops from up to 32 in; warranty lists drop cover |
- Do you set weights down hard? PowerBlock and NÜO say not to drop theirs. REP says the QuickDraw handles occasional drops, but its warranty excludes drop damage. Only Snode's warranty page lists accidental-drop coverage.
- Do you need small jumps? PowerBlock's smallest step is 2.5 lb. REP needs its included 2.5 lb plates for 5 lb steps. Snode moves 10 lb at a time unless you add its magnetic plates, sold separately.
- Where will it sit? PowerBlock, NÜO and Snode limit their warranties to home use. Leave floor room for the cradle: REP's is 20.6 inches long and Snode's 19.3.
Most settings, smallest steps: PowerBlock Elite USA 90
A nested steel stack with a magnetic pin tied to the first plate by a tether. The listing names Stage 1, 2 and 3, which PowerBlock says take it to 90 lb. PowerBlock's page lists 27 settings (our count) in 2.5 and 5 lb steps. The manual says never to let the dumbbells drop to the ground and that dropping the plates from any height voids the warranty. It asks you to check the pin before each lift, and says home use only.
No stand comes with it. The manual gives 10 years on the plates, rails and handle; PowerBlock's page says 5 years, residential use only.

A simple twist up to 80 lb: NÜOBELL 580
You turn the handle while the dumbbell sits in its cradle. NÜO lists 16 weights from 5 to 80 lb and says the handle number can be off by up to 5 percent. Its manual says to change weight only when fully seated and to check the bar ends sit 5 mm inside the outer plate. It also rules out drops onto floors, benches or racks, and kick-up techniques (swinging the weight up off your knees).
It is for indoor home use, ages 14 and up. The manual gives 2 years; NÜO's page adds 2 only when bought from NÜO Athletics, so ask whether an Amazon order counts.

Fast switch changes up to 60 lb: REP QuickDraw
Steel switches lock the plates. REP sells 30, 40, 50 and 60 lb sizes, so check the size selected; the 60 lb dumbbell is 18.5 inches long. REP says two 2.5 lb plates make 5 lb steps, and one gives 2.5 lb steps with a small imbalance. REP says it is designed for occasional drops, but repeated drops can break it, and to land it flat because edge drops stress it most. The lifetime warranty covers the original buyer only and excludes damage from consistent dropping and from accidents, including drops and dings.

Cast iron, a fixed grip and drop cover: Snode AD80
All cast iron, with eight settings (10 to 80 lb) chosen at a side dial, so the grip never turns. Snode says it survives drops from up to 32 inches; we could not verify that. Snode's warranty page gives 4 years with accidental-drop coverage for orders shipped from March 1, 2026 (2 years, also with drop coverage, before). The Amazon listing text our guide read says 2 years, so ask Snode in writing which term applies and what a drop claim needs.
Its user guide says to shake each setting firmly before the first workout and never to force the dial while the dumbbell is out of its cradle.

What to check before buying
The adjustable dumbbell guides here list every weight setting each maker publishes, since step sizes and starting weights differ widely. They note the dumbbell's length at each load, the maker's rules on where the weight may be changed, what the manual says about dropping them, and whether a stand is included or sold separately.
- Range and step size. Check the lightest setting and the size of each jump. Guides report five settings in 10 lb steps, 2.5 lb steps only up to 25 lb, a handle that starts at 10 lb, and finer steps that rely on separate micro plates.
- Length at each weight. Some designs stay the same length at every setting, 16.9 or 19 inches, while others grow as plates are added, to 18.5 inches at 60 lb on one pair. One guide finds the maker and listing giving different lengths.
- Where weight is changed. Several manuals allow the weight to change only while the dumbbell sits in its cradle or tray. Pin-selected designs instead require the selector pin to stay on its tether, and the guides quote these rules from the manual.
- What dropping does. Makers treat drops very differently. Two guides quote manuals saying a drop from any height voids the warranty or counts as abuse, one maker claims drops from up to 32 inches, and another says repeated or edge drops can break it.
- Warranty by source. Warranty length often differs between the maker's page, the manual and the listing. Guides report 10 years against 5, four years only when bought from the maker, a 30-day term, and cover that needs registration within 14 days.
This page collects 9 adjustable dumbbell guides from Plain Buy Guides. Each guide covers one exact Amazon listing: the maker's published specifications, what the listing says is included, the fit and installation limits that decide whether it suits you, and the main caveat, with every source listed and dated. Nothing here is based on hands-on testing, and no guide promises a price or stock level.
In the table above, the Best for column says who each model suits, and the strength and caveat columns carry the first point each guide makes. Open a guide before buying to confirm the exact model, the included parts and any conflict between the listing and the maker's documents, which each guide reports rather than settles. Side-by-side pages put the published facts of two models from this category in one place.
Compare the published specs
The main figures stated in each adjustable dumbbell guide on this page, side by side, with each guide's sources behind them. Units are as published; nothing here was measured by us.
A table scrolls sideways when it is wider than the screen. Select a column heading to sort.
— means the guide does not state that figure. Only single figures in the column’s unit, with no mark, word or note in brackets, are sorted and counted below.
By the numbers
These cover only the 9 adjustable dumbbells on this site, not the whole market. Ranges use the figures the guides state; the lowest and highest link to their guides, and the median is the middle of those figures. A model whose figure is missing, not applicable, more than one, marked, in words, in another unit or qualified in brackets is left out of that line.
- Lightest setting across all 9 adjustable dumbbells: 5 lb to 15 lb, median 5 lb. Lowest: NÜOBELL 580 Adjustable Dumbbells, 5-80 lb Pair and 4 others. Highest: FLYBIRD DB2 Adjustable Dumbbell Pair, 55 lb.
- Heaviest setting across all 9 adjustable dumbbells: 25 lb to 90 lb, median 60 lb. Lowest: Lifepro PowerFlow Plus Adjustable Dumbbells, 5-25 lb Pair (LP-PWRFLWPLS). Highest: PowerBlock Elite USA 90 Adjustable Dumbbells, Pair, 5-90 lb.

Want fixed dumbbells with a rack?
Fixed sets keep each weight on its own handle. Our dumbbell set with rack guide compares exact CAP 150-lb and 210-lb rubber-hex kits. The total set weight differs from the heaviest dumbbell: these kits stop at 25 or 30 lb per hand. Check the included pairs, selected handle style, rack fit and drop-related warranty limits before ordering.
