Shop vacs for car detailing: choose the hose and tools first

A larger tank is not always easier inside a car

Start with the space around the seats and where the vacuum will sit. Check the crevice tool, hose diameter and replacement filters before comparing headline horsepower. If your existing vacuum works, a compatible detailing kit may solve the reach problem without replacing the machine.

A five-gallon option with car tools: Vacmaster Beast VFB511H 0201

This Beast has a 7-foot, 1⅞-inch hose and an 18-foot power cord. Its listed tools include a car nozzle and crevice tool, plus separate dry-filtration and foam wet-filter components. That is 25 feet of combined hose-and-cord reach, not a 25-foot hose. Choose it when you want a portable five-gallon unit with those tools; check adapters before buying accessories in another hose size.

A smaller tank for quick cleanups: Armor All AA255W

The AA255W has a 2.5-gallon tank and a carry handle. Its manufacturer lists a car nozzle, detail brush and crevice tool. It is worth comparing when storage and carrying matter more than a large collection tank. Confirm the exact AA255W accessory package; a smaller tank also means less room before emptying.

What to check before buying

The shop vac guides here check hose diameter and length, cord length and combined reach against the maker's manual, since listings often differ. They note which filters come in the box and what the manual says about fine dust, compare airflow and amp figures across sources, and read what each warranty excludes.

This page collects 20 shop vac guides from Plain Buy Guides. Each guide covers one exact Amazon listing: the maker's published specifications, what the listing says is included, the fit and installation limits that decide whether it suits you, and the main caveat, with every source listed and dated. Nothing here is based on hands-on testing, and no guide promises a price or stock level.

In the table above, the Best for column says who each model suits, and the strength and caveat columns carry the first point each guide makes. Open a guide before buying to confirm the exact model, the included parts and any conflict between the listing and the maker's documents, which each guide reports rather than settles. Side-by-side pages put the published facts of two models from this category in one place.

Compare the published specs

The main figures stated in each shop vac guide on this page, side by side, with each guide's sources behind them. Units are as published; nothing here was measured by us.

A table scrolls sideways when it is wider than the screen.

— means the guide does not state that figure. “or” means the guide states more than one figure, for example where two sources disagree, for different modes or versions, or where a kit includes two tools; open the guide to see which applies. † means the guide reports that another source gives a different figure, or doubts the figure; open the guide. Only single figures in the column’s unit, with no mark, word or note in brackets, are sorted and counted below.

By the numbers

These cover only the 20 shop vacs on this site, not the whole market. Ranges use the figures the guides state; the lowest and highest link to their guides, and the median is the middle of those figures. A model whose figure is missing, not applicable, more than one, marked, in words, in another unit or qualified in brackets is left out of that line.

Collect dust while using a connected tool

For sanding or cutting, compare tool-start limits, hose cuffs, filter cleaning and complete packages in the dust extractor buying guide. For ordinary spills and loose debris, the wet/dry vac choices on this page may be enough.
