Benchtop drill press: choose by reach, travel and bench fit

Consider the compact WEN 4206T for work that fits its 8-inch swing, 2-inch spindle travel and five available speeds. Choose the larger WEN DP1263V when you need its 12-inch swing, 3⅛-inch travel or variable speed. Neither includes the clamps, vise or bench fasteners needed for a complete setup. Check your actual workpiece and bench before choosing.

Two presses for different workshop limits

If your current drill and fixture already suit the job, a drill press may add nothing you need. These choices concern published fit and controls; they are not a ranking of tested drilling performance.

Fit the intended hole, bit, fixture and bench—not just the advertised chuck size.

Reach, stroke and clearance answer different questions

Swing is reach. WEN defines it as twice the distance from the spindle centerline to the forward edge of the column. The published 8- and 12-inch swings therefore correspond to nominal 4- and 6-inch distances. That can let a press reach the center of an 8- or 12-inch circular workpiece. An awkward shape or fixture can obstruct it sooner: check the intended hole position against the actual column and support.

Spindle travel is movement in one plunge. It does not, alone, establish the thickest part or deepest hole you can drill. Allow for the bit's usable length, backing material and vise beneath it. WEN's DP1263V manual gives 20 inches from chuck to base, not a guaranteed chuck-to-table space with your fixture installed. The reviewed 4206T sources give no equivalent clearance figure.

Chuck capacity is shank grip. A reduced-shank cutter can make a hole larger than its shank, but that does not prove the machine suits the cutter or material. Match shank, hole size, speed and workholding separately. The maker's speed guidance favors lower speeds for larger bits and harder materials; if the required RPM falls below the press's minimum, skip that pairing.

What the exact models change

WEN 4206T: compact size, five belt settings

The 4206/4206T manual lists a 6½-inch-square table, 11 × 7-inch base, 23-inch height and 32 lb weight. The product page lists five speeds: 750, 1100, 1500, 2100 and 3200 RPM. Changing the belt setting requires unplugging the press. Its table tilts up to 45° each way, and a locking depth stop helps set repeated travel.

The chuck's stated maximum is ½ inch. WEN's page gives the lower limit as 1/20 inch but pairs it with 1.5 mm; 1/20 inch is 1.27 mm. The manual gives only the maximum. Confirm the actual minimum grip if you use tiny bits.

The manual's tool-purpose warning names metal and wood; the product page also mentions plastics. For intended plastic work, resolve that disagreement with WEN rather than treating the page as permission. Choose this model when the smaller reach, travel, speed steps and supported material suit your job; skip it when they do not.

WEN DP1263V: longer travel and variable speed

The manual specifies a ⅛–⅝-inch chuck range, 3⅛-inch stroke and 580–3100 RPM no-load speed. WEN lists a 9½-inch-square tilting table, roller extension, depth stop, laser and work light. These features do not establish measured hole accuracy.

The size figures disagree: the page says 16.8 × 13.5 × 36.6 inches and 85 lb; the current manual says 22 × 14½ × 37 inches and 87.6 lb. The page separately lists a 10 × 16-inch base. Confirm the supplied unit's dimensions, mounting pattern and weight before buying for a tight bench, including room for handles and the belt cover.

WEN requires the variable-speed lever to be adjusted with the machine running. That differs from the unplugged belt changes on the 4206T; it does not permit opening the cover or changing a belt while powered. Choose it for useful additional reach, travel or speed control—not an assumed torque or accuracy win.

Allow for mounting and workholding

Warranty differs: DP1263V's manual gives two years for personal use. The 4206/4206T manual gives two years or 500 hours, whichever comes first. Both give 90 days for professional/commercial use and require the original buyer's qualifying purchase proof; wear exclusions and return-shipping terms apply. Confirm seller eligibility and the supplied terms rather than assuming the Amazon listing guarantees coverage.

When neither press fits

Look for another documented model if the work needs greater reach, different clearance or slower speeds. A floor-standing label alone does not prove those requirements are met. For a part that cannot be supported and positioned safely, change the tool or fixture rather than forcing it under the spindle.

Common buying questions

Does a ⅝-inch chuck mean it drills ⅝-inch holes in any material?

No. Chuck capacity describes shank grip. Hole size also depends on the cutter, material, required speed and workholding. We have not tested either press's drilling capacity.

Does two inches of spindle travel mean a two-inch maximum workpiece?

No. Travel is the spindle's movement in one plunge. The actual job also needs sufficient bit length and clearance for the part, backer and fixture; travel alone does not prove a through-hole will work.

Do these listings include bench bolts or a vise?

Neither maker's packing list includes the heavy-duty bench fasteners or clamps/vise. The included bolts assemble the column to the base. Confirm the current package and choose appropriate mounting and workholding separately.

Can I change the DP1263V's speed with the motor off?

WEN says to adjust its variable-speed lever while running. For the 4206T's belt changes, unplug the press. Follow the exact manual; do not use one model's speed procedure on the other.
