Three dual-band Wi-Fi 6 routers, each able to be the gateway

This ASIN is the three-pack of the eero 6+, sold on Amazon under the eero Store name in one, two, three and four packs, with or without an eero Plus subscription; this is the version without. The listing describes each unit as a router that connects to your modem as the primary router, and eero's support comparison lists the use case as gateway or extender, sitting on a flat surface.

eero's shop page describes the radio as Wi-Fi 6 dual-band concurrent 2:2 (802.11ax), with 160 MHz channels in the 5 GHz band. Both eero and the listing give an AX3000 rating. eero calls the eero 6+ its second-generation dual-band Wi-Fi 6 product.

eero's FAQ says one eero in every network is designated the gateway by connecting it to your modem using an Ethernet port on the back, and that the eero 6+ is one of the models that can be used as a gateway. eero's setup requirement is internet service, with a cable, fiber or DSL modem if required, and a supported iOS or Android device.

A gigabit system, on the wired and wireless side

eero positions the eero 6+ for internet plans up to a gigabit. The shop page says it supports speeds up to a gigabit and is ideal for ISP plans up to a gigabit, and its comparison chart gives a recommended ISP speed of 1 Gbps. The listing title says the same: internet plans up to a gigabit.

eero's support comparison gives the per-unit ceiling as wired speeds up to 1 Gbps and wireless speeds up to 1 Gbps. It also notes that specifications assume a wired Ethernet connection and that your experienced speed may vary when connected to an eero configured as a wireless extender.

The same support article says eero 6+ figures are based on a Wi-Fi 6 or later client device that supports 160 MHz, and eero's FAQ adds that you need a Wi-Fi 6 compatible connected device to enjoy the full benefits.

Two gigabit Ethernet ports per unit, and wired backhaul

Each eero 6+ has two auto-sensing gigabit Ethernet ports for WAN or LAN connectivity, according to eero's tech specs and the listing. On the gateway unit one of those carries your internet feed, which leaves one spare port on that unit and two on each of the others. The listing's comparison table counts six ports across the three-pack.

eero's support article on Ethernet says eeros can be connected together by Ethernet backhaul or wirelessly, and that if your home is already wired with Ethernet you will want to use those connections. It asks for Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a cable and allows either a switch back to the gateway or a daisy chain from unit to unit.

Power comes from an external 15W supply running on 100-240V AC, per the shop page. The listing and the shop page both list Amazon Frustration-Free Setup alongside the eero app, which the listing says handles setup and management.

Coverage per unit, and two different unit heights

eero states coverage of up to 1,500 sq ft per device in its support comparison, and the shop page and listing give up to 4,500 sq ft for the three-pack, so the two statements agree. Both eero and the listing say the system supports 75+ connected devices.

The size is not stated consistently. eero's shop page gives 99.4 by 97 by 65.9 mm (3.90 by 3.80 by 2.60 inches), and the listing gives nearly the same, 3.9 by 3.8 by 2.6 inches. eero's own support comparison gives 3.82 by 3.92 by 2.35 inches (97 by 99.4 by 59.7 mm), which is about 6 mm shorter. Neither page explains the difference.

eero's support comparison article says its coverage figures are based on normal use conditions and that its specifications assume a wired Ethernet connection, with speeds that may vary on an eero set up as a wireless extender.

Encryption defaults and mixing with older eeros

The shop page and the listing both list WPA3 as an 'eero Labs feature' alongside WPA2, TLS v1.2+, VPN passthrough, IPv6, NAT, UPnP, port forwarding, DHCP and static IP. eero's general encryption article describes three options you can set per band: Standard (WPA2 only), Hybrid (WPA2 plus WPA3) and Enhanced (WPA3 only).

That article gives Standard (WPA2) as the default on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the two bands this model has, and warns that Hybrid and Enhanced may affect roaming for some devices and that some legacy devices may fail to connect. The product pages and the general article do not say whether the eero Labs label still applies, so check the options in your own app.

eero says the eero 6+ is backwards compatible with previous eero generations, but its FAQ and the listing's disclaimer both warn that combining it with older generation eero devices on the same network may reduce performance, and eero recommends using the same generation across your network.

Smart home hub, subscription features and warranty

eero's shop page says the eero 6+ works as a smart home hub so you can control supported Thread and Zigbee devices with Alexa, such as lights, locks and plugs. The listing lists an 802.15.4 radio for Zigbee and Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0; eero's tech spec line lists Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, Works with Alexa and Amazon Frustration-Free setup.

The listing says online security and additional network management features are available through a separate subscription, and its subscription note says the 30-day eero Plus trial is limited to one per new eero customer account. The shop page lists the hardware as 1 GHz dual-core with 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of flash storage, and an operating range of 0°C to 40°C.

Both the shop page and the listing state a one-year limited warranty, with customer support available seven days a week; the listing bullet gives a US phone number and a support email. eero's 30-day returns and free shipping apply to purchases from eero directly, so check the seller and condition of the offer you select on Amazon.
