A boundary-wire mower, and the manual on the listing is a different model
The SILENO city is the older kind of robot mower: you lay a boundary wire and a guide wire around the lawn, peg or bury them, and the mower stays inside the loop. There is no satellite positioning and no camera. Connection to your phone is by Bluetooth for scheduling and settings, which also means you have to be near the mower to change anything.
Before using any manual you find online with this machine, check which one you have. The PDF attached to this Amazon listing is the operator's manual for the GARDENA SILENO minimo, a different model with different limits. We have not used any of its numbers here. The manual that covers this mower is GARDENA's SILENO city and SILENO life operator's manual.
GARDENA's own product page for the SILENO city 250 m² is marked as a legacy model and carries the European article number 15001-20, while this listing's part number is 15001-41. The 250 square metre rating matches the listing's 2,700 square feet. GARDENA's page also lists 2022 and 2023 revisions of the operator's manual, so figures in the 2018 revision we read may have been updated.
The slope claim is the number to check first
The Amazon bullet says the mower handles slopes of up to a 35 per cent gradient, which it gives as 19 degrees. The 2018 SILENO city operator's manual says something narrower: for slopes steeper than 25 per cent inside the work area, isolate the slope with boundary wire, and it gives 30 per cent for the larger SILENO life instead.
We are not going to pick between them. The manual we read is a 2018 revision and GARDENA has published later ones. If your lawn has a real slope, ask GARDENA which figure applies to article 15001-41 before buying, because the difference between 25 and 35 per cent decides whether part of your lawn has to be fenced off with wire.
The manual adds two slope rules that do not change with the revision. For slopes steeper than 10 per cent along the outer edge of the lawn, put the boundary wire 20 centimetres, 8 inches, in from the edge. Where the work area is next to water, a slope, a drop or a public road, the boundary wire must have a protective wall at least 15 centimetres, 6 inches, high.
Wire distances are specific, and so is the passage width
Laying the wire is the install. The manual gives distances by obstacle height: 35 centimetres, 14 inches, from anything more than 5 centimetres high; 30 centimetres, 12 inches, from obstacles 1 to 5 centimetres high; and 10 centimetres, 4 inches, from anything under 1 centimetre. Paving level with the lawn gets the wire underneath it, and gravel is off limits entirely.
Narrow parts of a garden have their own rules. A passage with boundary wire on each side must be at least 60 centimetres, 24 inches, wide, and if the passage is less than 2 metres, about 6.5 feet, wide you must run a guide wire through it. The charging station also needs at least 2 metres of clearance to the boundary wire.
Wire can be pegged down with stakes, where grass grows over it within a few weeks, or buried 1 to 20 centimetres deep with an edge cutter or a straight shovel. Islands around trees, beds and similar obstacles are made by running the wire out and back with both sections in the same stake, never crossing. Nothing here is hard, but it is an afternoon's work and it is permanent.
Power supply siting, and a nineteen-hour rest day
The power supply has rules of its own: under a roof, out of sun and rain, in good airflow, at least 30 centimetres above the ground and never on the ground itself, connected to a 100-240V outdoor outlet through a residual-current device. For the USA and Canada the manual is specific: if the power supply is installed outdoors, install it only to a covered Class A GFCI receptacle with a weatherproof enclosure. Do not cut, extend or coil the low-voltage cable, which is 5 metres long as supplied.
Then there is the standby table, which is easy to miss and shapes what this mower can actually do. GARDENA lists a minimum standby time per day by model size, and for the 250 square metre model that is 19 hours. In other words the mower is designed to work at most about five hours a day, whatever your schedule says. The manual's worked examples show the same logic for larger models, where an 11-hour active period is matched by 13 hours of charging and standby.
Technical data for the SILENO city gives an 18-volt 2.1 amp-hour lithium-ion battery, average mowing time of 65 minutes, average charging time of 60 minutes and mean energy consumption of 4 kWh a month in a 500 square metre work area. The body is 55 by 38 by 23 centimetres and 7.3 kilograms, about 16 pounds; Amazon's table says 18 pounds.
Blades last weeks, not months
GARDENA's blade guidance is blunt: normal blade life is 4 to 7 weeks when used under favourable conditions. It depends on operating time, work area size, grass type and seasonal growth, soil, sand and fertiliser, and on objects such as cones, windfalls, toys, tools, stones and roots. Inspect the blade disc and blades once a week when the mower is new, and you can lengthen the interval if wear turns out to be low.
Blunt blades do not just cut worse. The manual notes the grass is not cut cleanly and more energy is used, so the mower covers less ground per charge. GARDENA sells a blade kit of nine blades and nine screws, which covers three changes since the mower uses three blades at a time.
Cleaning is a dish brush or a garden hose, never a high-pressure washer and never solvents, because grass stuck to the machine reduces how well it copes with slopes. Clean around the front wheels, the rear wheel and its bracket for the same reason, and use a damp sponge or cloth on the cover.
Winter storage and a two-year guarantee with real exclusions
For storage, GARDENA asks you to charge the mower fully, switch it off with the ON/OFF button, clean it, and keep it in a dry, frost-free space with all wheels on level ground or on a GARDENA wall hanger. Charging the battery fully before winter matters: the manual warns that an uncharged battery can be damaged and in some cases rendered useless.
If you bring the charging station indoors, disconnect and remove the power supply and all the connectors and put the end of each connector wire into a container of grease. If you leave the charging station outdoors, GARDENA's instruction is the opposite: do not disconnect the power supply and connectors.
The guarantee is two years from the date of purchase, covering serious material or manufacturing faults, with GARDENA replacing or repairing free of charge provided the mower and charging station have only been used as the manual instructs and no end user or unauthorised third party has attempted a repair. The exclusions are worth reading twice: water seepage from a high-pressure washer or from submersion, including pools formed by heavy rain; lightning damage; improper battery storage or handling; a non-GARDENA battery; non-GARDENA spare parts and accessories including blades and installation material; damage to the loop wire; and unauthorised changes to the product or its power supply. Blades and wheels are treated as disposable and are not covered at all.
