One mower, two ways to draw the boundary

The 410iQ is the smallest of three mowers sharing one operator's manual, alongside the 420iQ and 440iQ. What makes it unusual is that Husqvarna documents two installation methods for it. Chapter three covers a virtual-boundary installation using EPOS satellite positioning, and chapter four covers a conventional boundary-wire installation with stakes, a guide wire and a loop signal. The listing sells the wire-free route; the wired route is in the same book if your yard suits it better.

For the wire-free setup the manual lists the necessary components as the mower, the charging station, a power supply connected to a 110V outlet, a reference station that receives satellite signals and sends correction data to the mower, and a phone running the Automower Connect app. The listing's kit line names the mower, charging station, welcome guide, operator's manual and all materials needed for standard installation, without naming the reference station, so confirm that piece is in the box before you buy.

Husqvarna also describes an alternative where correction data comes through Husqvarna Cloud rather than a reference station on site. The manual does not say what that arrangement costs or whether it needs a plan, and neither does the listing, so ask Husqvarna before assuming either option is free.

Half an acre is the systematic figure, not the everyday one

The listing headline says up to half an acre. The manual's technical data gives two different numbers for the 410iQ: area capacity for irregular mowing is 1,000 square metres, a quarter acre, and area capacity for systematic mowing with EPOS is 2,000 square metres, half an acre. The advertised figure is the systematic one, which depends on the satellite installation working well across the whole lawn.

Husqvarna also publishes an hourly rate you can plan with: approximately 92 square metres or 990 square feet per hour for the 410iQ, measured on a flat, open work area. Its worked example divides lawn area by that rate to get daily run hours, and it warns that slopes and obstacles mean you must increase the schedule beyond that arithmetic.

Cutting width is 24 centimetres or 9.4 inches and cutting height adjusts from 2.5 to 10 centimetres, 1 to 4 inches. A TargetHeight function lowers the height gradually over ten days, and the manual prints recommended heights by grass species, from under an inch for bentgrass up to 3.5 to 4 inches for St. Augustine.

Forty-five per cent slopes, but only fifteen for the boundary

The 45% slope figure in the listing title is real and is in the technical data as the maximum slope for the work area. The catch is in the next line: the maximum slope for a boundary is 15%. Virtual boundaries can only be installed on slopes up to 15%, and the same limit applies to boundary wire. If part of your lawn is steeper than 45%, the manual tells you to isolate it with a stay-out zone.

There is more detail worth reading before you plan a hillside. For slopes steeper than 15% along the outer edge of the lawn, you record the virtual boundary with the mower's rear wheel 20 centimetres, 8 inches, from the edge. For slopes beside a public road, Husqvarna asks for a fence or protective wall along the outer edge. It also recommends setting the systematic pattern straight up the slope to reduce wear on the grass, and notes that spiral cutting does not start on slopes steeper than 17%.

Narrow passages are where the two installation methods differ most. The technical data gives the narrowest possible passage as 60 centimetres, 24 inches, with a boundary wire, but 200 centimetres, 79 inches, with a virtual boundary. If your lawn is joined by a side path much narrower than about six and a half feet, the wire-free installation this listing advertises may not handle it.

Mapping the lawn is a driving job, with rules

You build the map by driving the mower with appDrive and dropping waypoints, and straight lines are drawn between them. Husqvarna asks for at least 30 centimetres, a foot, between waypoints, caps each work area and its related stay-out zones and transport path at 800 waypoints, and recommends no more than about 1,000 waypoints for a complete installation. Up to 20 work areas and secondary areas can exist on one map. You must not lift and carry the mower between waypoints while mapping.

Preparation matters. The manual asks you to fill holes in the lawn, cut the grass to no more than 10.5 centimetres or 4 inches before installing, sketch a blueprint of the yard with obstacles marked, and make sure the work area has unimpeded sky view. Stay-out zones should go around objects bigger than 2 by 2 metres, must be at least 30 by 30 centimetres, and must not be drawn across a work area to block off part of it.

Around the charging station, Husqvarna recommends at least 6 metres, about 20 feet, of free space in front, and the reversing distance is settable from 70 to 250 centimetres. If the charging station or its docking point sits outside the work area, you have to install a transport path, which the mower drives without cutting.

Anti-theft is PIN, alarm and GeoFence; weather timing is not a rain sensor

Security is a menu of its own, reachable only over Bluetooth with the PIN. The factory setting requires the PIN after the STOP button is pressed, and five wrong entries lock the mower for a period that lengthens with each further attempt. Alarm duration is settable from 1 to 10 minutes. Two triggers can be enabled: STOP button pressed, which sounds if no PIN is entered within 30 seconds, and Carried away, which senses unexpected motion.

GeoFence is the GPS-based part the listing refers to. It sets a virtual fence centred on the mower's position when you enable it; if the mower goes further than the set distance it is disabled and the alarm starts, and the PIN is needed to stop the alarm and restart it. GeoFence only works while the mower is set to ON.

On weather, be precise about what this mower has. The manual describes a Weather timer that adjusts cutting time to the growth of the grass, for work areas using the irregular pattern, and resets if the mower does not run for more than 50 hours. Neither the manual pages we read nor the listing describes a rain sensor that stops mowing in wet weather. Object avoidance is separate and can be turned off; Husqvarna notes it can leave grass uncut around objects and can mistake tall grass or flowers for obstacles.

Blades, winter storage and what the warranty leaves out

The cutting system is three pivoted blades on a disc. Husqvarna puts blade life at 500 to 1,000 hours and says operation time, work area size, grass length and thickness, soil, sand, fertiliser and objects such as cones, stones and roots all change it. When replacing, all blades and screws go at once for a balanced disc, the screws must be new because used ones can wear and let a blade come loose, and Husqvarna says only its blades with the embossed crowned H mark are certified. The listing includes a year's worth of blades, which its own footnote bases on 500 to 1,000 mowing hours per set.

Maintenance is weekly at first: check the blade disc and blades each week when the mower is new, examine the product for damage and wear, and clean it. Cleaning is a soft brush or a low-pressure hose, never a high-pressure washer and never solvents. Yearly jobs include polishing the contact plates on the charging station and the charging plates on the mower. Several items, including the wheels, skid plate, rubber bellows and airflow filter, are marked as dealer jobs with no instructions in the manual.

For winter, Husqvarna's storage procedure is: charge the battery fully, set the mower to OFF, clean it, and store mower and battery in a dry, frost-free place within a storage temperature range of -20 to 70°C, -4 to 158°F, resting on all wheels or on a Husqvarna wall hanger. The top of the charging station can be removed and stored with the power supply indoors; the baseplate can stay outside.

The supplied warranty document runs to the original retail purchaser and excludes a lot that matters here: normal wear parts including blades; damage from failure to perform the maintenance the operator's manual prescribes; abuse, modification or improper servicing; improper voltage or exposure to temperatures outside product specifications for robotic mowers, charging stations and power supplies; and damage from set-up or repair by anyone other than a Husqvarna authorised servicing dealer. It also states there is no battery warranty on first-sale units manufactured more than twelve months earlier, and none on scratch-and-dent or prior-model-year discounted units. The chart of warranty periods did not extract reliably, so we do not quote a length from it; the listing footnote claims four years on the mower and a separate three years on batteries, which is worth confirming with Husqvarna.
