What is in the box

Makita's includes list names a side handle, a depth gauge and a tool case. The Amazon listing's model field reads HR2641, and the hammer is corded, with a 13.1 ft. cord per Makita's specs.

Makita's page lists a net weight of 7.1 lbs. The manual's specification table, shared with four other models, gives 3.1 kg (6.8 lbs) in a cell spanning the HR2641 and HR2631FT columns.

Speed, blows and impact energy

Makita lists 0 to 1,100 rpm and 0 to 4,500 BPM, the same figures the manual's table prints for the HR2641, and 2.9 J (2.1 ft.lbs.) of impact energy from the 8 amp motor.

Makita claims its sequential impact timing drills up to 50% faster by timing hammer blows during rotation; that is Makita's claim, not a test of ours. A variable speed trigger and a lock button allow continuous running.

Capacities: page against manual

The manual rates the HR2641 for 1 in. in concrete, 1/2 in. in steel and 1-1/4 in. in wood, with 2-11/16 in. for a core bit and 3-1/8 in. for a dry diamond core bit. Makita's page lists 3-1/8 in. as the core bit maximum and 1/4 to 5/8 in. as the optimum concrete range.

Drilling wood or metal needs the optional drill chuck assembly in rotation-only mode, per the manual. It also says hole saws are not suited to the tool, because they make the torque limiter trip too often.

AVT, modes and reverse

Anti-Vibration Technology moves an internal counterweight against the drive piston, and a damper spring absorbs impact vibration, per Makita; the page lists 11.5 m/s² of vibration. A knob sets rotation only, rotation with hammering, or hammering only for chipping, and Makita lists 40 bit angle settings.

In reverse the trigger pulls only halfway, so the tool runs at half speed, and the lock button cannot be used. A torque limiter disengages the motor if the bit binds, and a hook lifts out for hanging the tool.

Uses and warranty

Makita names overhead drilling into concrete, wood and metal and removing tile as applications, for trades from masons and plumbers to electricians and sprinkler installers.

The HR2641 manual states a one-year limited warranty. Makita's warranty page gives every Makita product one year unless a longer term is listed, and its three-year term covers lithium-ion tools, batteries, chargers, MAKTRAK storage and pneumatic nailers.
