What it drives and what comes with it

Metabo HPT says the NT65MA4 takes 15-gauge angled nails from 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 in. in a 34 degree magazine that holds 100 nails. It names crown and base moldings, window and door casings, chair rails, cabinets, exterior trim and staircases as its jobs.

The box list on Metabo HPT's page names safety glasses, a no-mar tip, a 1/4 in. NPT male plug and a carrying case, while the manual's standard accessories list safety glasses, a nose cap and a case. The Amazon listing's model field reads NT65MA4.

Air supply

Metabo HPT's page and the manual give 70 to 120 psi. The manual's air table lists .038 cubic feet per cycle at 80 psi, .042 at 90 psi and .045 at 100 psi, and its worked example puts 3 nailers at 100 psi driving 30 nails a minute at 4.9 CFM.

The manual says never to connect the nailer to pressure that can exceed 200 psi, to use only clean, dry, regulated compressed air, and to drain the compressor daily, since moisture or oil in it may speed wear and corrosion in the nailer.

15-gauge angled or 16-gauge straight

This hub's other finish nailer, the NT65M2S, takes 16-gauge nails from 1 to 2-1/2 in. in a straight magazine and weighs 3.7 lbs. The NT65MA4 takes 15-gauge nails from 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 in. in a 34 degree magazine and weighs 4.2 lbs, so it is the heavier of the two (our comparison of Metabo HPT's pages).

Metabo HPT says the NT65MA4's compact body and angled magazine make it easier to place and use in tight angles. The manual's applications list manufactured housing, on-site and mobile home construction, cabinets, furniture and woodworking.

Firing modes, duster and depth

A switching device selects single sequential or contact actuation. The manual warns that in contact firing, if the push lever touches the work again after recoil, an unwanted nail is driven, and for intermittent work it says to set single actuation and pull the trigger rapidly and firmly.

Pressing a knob with your thumb blows shavings off the work. The manual says long use of the duster can lower nailing force for a while, and that oil or water from the compressor can sometimes spout from its outlet. Depth adjusts with a tool-less dial, and Metabo HPT lists a 360 degree exhaust port.

Oil, cold weather and warranty

The manual calls for Hitachi pneumatic tool lubricant through a lubricator, or 5 to 10 drops into the air plug twice a day without one, and says not to store the nailer in the cold. It asks for genuine nails made for the NT65MA4.

Metabo HPT's page says the NT65MA4 is covered by its Professional 5-Year Tool Warranty. The manual Metabo HPT links is printed under the older Hitachi name.
