Neakasa M1 Plus Open-Top Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box (PS0120)

An open-top box that you assemble, not one that arrives ready

Amazon lists this as the Neakasa M1 Plus in grey, model number PS0120 with manufacturer part number "M1 Plus" and UPC 198168022559. The user manual that Neakasa's own M1 Plus product page links carries the same product model, PS0120, in its specification table, although the manual's cover says "Neakasa M1" rather than M1 Plus. We are telling you what each document says; if the difference matters to you, ask Neakasa which revision covers the unit you receive.

The design is open on top rather than enclosed. A litter chamber rotates to sift into a waste bin below, and the maker's page describes a pull-and-wrap system for sealing the bag as you remove it. Neakasa's page presents the open top as suiting large breeds, and says no activated carbon or deodorising packs are needed because a built-in sealing strip does the work.

There is assembly. The manual's first step is to take the machine out of the box, turn it on its side and fit four support legs into round holes in the bottom, expanding outward, before standing it flat. The manual's package list is the main unit, four support legs, a power adapter, two rolls of trash bags at fifteen pieces per roll, a litter-trapping mat, a user manual and a quick guide. Amazon's box list names the unit, a mat, two refill bag rolls totalling thirty bags, a manual and a quick start guide, and the details field adds a power adapter.

The cat weight floor: 2.2 lb in Neakasa's documents, 3.3 lb on Amazon

This is the most important discrepancy on this product, so here are the exact words. The manual's Safety Instructions end with: "For cats weighing less than 1kg, pregnant cats and nursing cats, set the device to Kitten Mode. Clean under supervision using the control buttons." One kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. Neakasa's product page uses the same figure twice: its spec block gives a cat weight limit of "2.2 lbs - around 33 lbs", and its copy asks "How about pregnant cats and kittens weighing less than 2.2 lbs (1kg)?" before pointing to Kitten Mode.

The Amazon listing gives a different floor. Its bullet says the box "Supports cats from 3.3–33 lbs" and that "For kittens under 3.3 lbs, enable Kitten Mode in the Neakasa App for safer use", and the item highlight repeats 3.3–33 lbs. We cannot reconcile 2.2 lb with 3.3 lb from the documents in front of us, and we will not guess which is current. If your cat or kitten is anywhere between those two figures, ask Neakasa support in writing before you buy.

What both sides agree on is what Kitten Mode means in practice. The manual says that under the threshold you clean under supervision using the control buttons, which is a manual routine rather than an automatic box. Neakasa's page also applies the same advice to pregnant cats, and the manual extends it to nursing cats as well. The upper figure is given by Neakasa as "around 33 lbs", and the maker's own wording is approximate.

Space, entry height and the room it has to live in

Entry is high for an open-top design. The manual's specification table gives a litter chamber entrance height of 35 cm, which it converts to 13.8 inches; Neakasa's page says 13.86 inches. If your cat is old, short-legged or unsteady, Neakasa sells step and fence variants of this model, and the step version is a separate purchase rather than something in this box.

Amazon's table gives the outside dimensions as 22 inches long by 20 wide by 26 high and 22 pounds. Neakasa's page gives a machine weight of 22.81 pounds (10.35 kg) and does not publish the outside dimensions we could read. We found no maker dimension figure to confirm Amazon's, so treat 22 x 20 x 26 inches as listing data and measure on arrival. Remember the four support legs and the litter-trapping mat both add to the floor area you need.

The manual's environmental limits are specific. It asks for a stable, indoor, cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, on a clean and flat hard surface, in a well-ventilated spot between 4 and 40°C with relative humidity not above 90 per cent and free from corrosive gases. It says the product is not suitable for outdoor use and must not be used where water may splash, and it asks you not to put anything on top of it or drag it when moving it.

Bentonite litter, a particle size limit and a calibration step

Litter choice is narrower than "any clumping litter". The manual's safety page says "It is recommended to use bentonite cat litter", and the add-litter step says "We recommend using clumping bentonite cat litter" and "Avoid using pellet cat litter (grain diameter exceeding 3mm, length exceeding 10mm), as it may result in unnecessary wastage of cat litter." Neakasa's product page gives the same numbers from the other direction: the filter sifts particles up to 3 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length.

The published litter capacity does not match between documents. The manual's specification table says the cat litter maximum capacity is 6.5 L; Neakasa's page says 7.17 L; Amazon says 7.2 L. The waste bin is 11 L in the manual, 11.23 L on the maker's page and 11.2 L on the listing. These are small gaps, but they are gaps, and we have no basis for choosing one.

There is a calibration step most buyers will not expect. The box weighs its own litter to report a level, so the manual tells you to recalibrate through the app whenever you change the type of litter, and warns that leaving objects on the litter box will throw the weight measurement off. Day to day, it says to add litter when the level drops below 60 per cent, never above the 100 per cent marking line, and that the machine levels the litter itself about a minute after you top it up, or immediately if you press the Level button.

How often you actually have to touch it

Amazon's bullet says the capacity supports up to 7 to 14 days of use, and Neakasa's page says up to two weeks. The manual's maintenance page is firmer and gives a shorter interval: empty the waste bin every 7 to 10 days for one cat and no longer than 14 days, and when summer temperatures are high, empty it at 7 days to prevent flies breeding. Plan around the manual's schedule rather than the headline number.

The manual adds a caution about the Empty function: before you long-press the Empty button, open the waste bin and check there is enough space left, because otherwise the bin can be overfilled and the door can jam. Its recovery instruction is to pull the waste bin out slowly, move it back and forth four or five times to level the litter, then pull it out slowly again.

Two deeper cleans are also in the manual. It recommends emptying all the litter and cleaning the litter chamber and waste bin once a month to reduce odour buildup, and rinsing the waste bin with water and letting it dry once every one to two months. For the chamber itself, unplug the power first, empty the litter, unlock the covers on both sides and pull them outward to lift the chamber off; it can be rinsed or brushed, and must dry with the opening facing upwards so water does not sit in the gaps. The body of the machine is different: do not wash it with water, wipe it with a damp cloth, and avoid pressing on the chamber door area. The safety page also rules out gasoline and other organic solvents, and immersing the product.

Sensors, app, power and a warranty that does not match itself

Neakasa's page describes six sets of sweeping infrared sensors, "up from 5 fixed ones", detecting a cat's movement, size and position, and a controlled rotation system that limits gear movement within a set angle. The Amazon bullet calls the same thing a 6-array rotary infrared system and an optimised gear structure that limits the litter bed's rotation angle. The manual's malfunction table also shows a weight sensor that reports an overload if objects are left in the box, and an infrared sensor inside the waste bin that can be blocked by a bunched-up trash bag. These are the maker's descriptions of what the parts do; we make no claim about outcomes.

The unit runs from five buttons: ON/OFF, Clean, Level, Empty and WIFI. Long-press ON/OFF for three seconds to switch on or off, press Clean once for a cycle, press Level once to flatten litter, long-press Empty for three seconds to dump all the litter, and long-press WIFI for three seconds to reset the network; a ten-second press of the Clean button restores factory settings. Pressing any button during cleaning, levelling or emptying interrupts the operation and starts a reset. The app needs Bluetooth and location services switched on to connect, and the Amazon bullet says the app is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.

Power is a 12 V adapter at 24 W rated power in the manual's specification table. Neakasa publishes an operating noise level of 50 dB in the manual and "≤ 50dB" on the product page, without stating the measurement conditions, so treat it as a maker claim rather than a tested figure. The manual notes that the chamber rotating may produce slight vibrations and noise and calls that normal.

The warranty is where the documents disagree most sharply. The manual's warranty page opens: "The warranty period is 12 months from the date of purchase." Amazon's details field says "2 Year" and the listing bullet advertises a 2-year protection plan; Neakasa's own product page shows a 2-Year Warranty badge and separately sells one-, two- and three-year accident protection plans through a partner. We cannot tell you which term applies to a unit bought on Amazon. The manual's terms are worth reading either way: cover is limited to free repair, consumables and accessories are excluded, damage caused by pets such as scratches, bites or riding the product is a paid repair, business use is excluded, and products not purchased directly from Neakasa sales channels are refused regardless of the period. Confirm the warranty in writing with the seller before you rely on two years.
