What this listing is

This is the Steelcase Gesture task chair with arms, in a colour the listing calls Tangerine Fabric. The model number field says Gesture and the part number is 442A40-Light/Light-5S17-5S17-4ARM-CC. Light/Light is one of the colour-scheme names Steelcase's Gesture page uses when it explains stool footring finishes, but the page does not decode the rest of the string.

The listing's included-components field lists only the office chair. Steelcase's page lists the integrated headrest, the polished aluminium base, glides, adjustable lumbar and a coat hanger as optional features, so a Gesture without those options is still a complete Gesture. The listing title and photos are your guide to what this particular configuration includes.

Two knobs on the right side do most of the work

Steelcase's page says the front knob controls seat height and depth, and the back knob controls tension and the variable back stop. The listing's bullet adds that all adjustments sit on the right side within arm's reach. The user guide explains each: turn the tension knob forward for more resistance and backward for less.

For seat depth, the guide says to stay seated and turn the knob away from you to extend the seat, and toward you to retract it. For seat height, lift your weight to raise the chair and stay seated to lower it. The variable back stop is a dial set inside the tension knob.

The 360 arms and the lumbar question

The guide describes the 360 arm as adjusting in height, depth, width and pivot. Steelcase's page says the arms move through a full 360-degree range so they can come up and in toward your body, which is the feature that sets Gesture apart from chairs with height-only arms in the same Steelcase range.

Lumbar is where buyers should look closely. Steelcase's page says the Core Equalizer, which links seat and back, provides lumbar support at any recline angle, with optional additional support available, and it lists adjustable lumbar under optional features. The 2016 user guide pictures a height-adjustable lumbar support. The listing's additional-features field names adjustable height, arm rest, ergonomic and seat lock but not adjustable lumbar, so ask the seller whether this unit has the sliding lumbar before you rely on it.

How many recline settings: three or four

The user guide says the variable back stop has four settings: upright lock, full recline and two stops in between. Steelcase's current page describes full recline with three recline angle stop settings and an upright back lock. The listing bullet says a full recline range with three settings and an upright back lock.

None of the three documents explains the difference in count. Check the dial on the chair you receive, and note that the guide calls the upright position a lock rather than a stop.

240 or 400 pounds, and the caster choice

The listing-supplied guide says the standard task chair is tested to EN 1335 parts 1, 2 and 3, for a normal eight-hour day by persons weighing up to 240 pounds. Steelcase's current page says the Gesture chair and stool handle weight up to 400 pounds, and the listing's maximum weight field says 400 pounds. The guide is multilingual and dated May 2016, and it does not say which market it was written for.

The same guide says soft casters suit hard floors and hard casters suit carpet. The listing title says Carpet Floors and its surface recommendation says Carpet, and they agree with each other here. Amazon's size fields read 32.5 by 27.5 by 21.25 inches, 70 pounds, a seat depth of 18.25 inches and a standard height range of 16 to 21 inches; no Steelcase dimension table was read to confirm them.

Which Steelcase warranty covers an Amazon purchase

Steelcase's Gesture page promises a Limited Lifetime warranty of 12 years, multi-shift, 24/7 parts and labour. The listing's warranty field quotes a different Steelcase lifetime text that names Turnstone, Nurture and Details brands. The June 2026 Americas warranty PDF gives seating mechanisms, lumbar mechanisms, headrests, cylinders, arm caps, foam and casters a 12-year term.

That PDF says it does not apply to products sold at retail to consumers, who are pointed to a separate consumer warranty we could not find. Steelcase's store FAQ says the consumer warranty applies only to purchases from store.steelcase.com or a Steelcase Authorized Retailer by buyers in the United States or Canada.

The guide says only qualified persons, meaning Steelcase staff and dealer engineers, should replace the gas lift. The Americas PDF lets Steelcase reject claims on products bought from unauthorised sellers, so check the seller on your offer and ask Steelcase whether it is authorised.
