What the box holds, and what the model name means

The listing gives model and part number as ZPG-7002C, with 697 square inches of cooking area and a 28-pound hopper. Z Grills' own assembly-support page lists this grill as 7002F (7002C) and 7002F2 (7002C2E), and gives both a single owner's manual. That is the maker's own pairing of the two designations, so the ZPG-7002F manual is the document to read for this grill.

Included components on the listing are the grill, a grease bucket, a grill cover and a pair of assembly gloves. A cover in the box is unusual enough to be worth naming, because the manual separately recommends using a Z Grills cover to protect the grill. Two meat probes are advertised in the bullets.

Assembly is substantial. The manual's component list runs to 48 numbered items plus a hardware pack, and the steps cover building the base and legs, fitting the chamber, mounting the hopper, fitting the lid handle, the smoke stack and chimney cap, positioning the grease drain pan and hanging the grease bucket. The manual asks for at least two people. Set aside real time before the first cook.

The listing advertises an LCD PID controller; the supplied manual describes a dial

The Amazon title and first bullet describe PID 3.0 technology with an LCD screen that auto-tunes fuel and airflow. The manual that Z Grills links for this model describes something different: a temperature dial with SMOKE, HIGH and SHUT DOWN CYCLE positions, an LED display, and a startup routine where you turn the dial by hand through several stages. Its wiring page is headed digital thermostat control.

We are not going to guess which one is in the carton or why the two differ. Report it as it stands: the maker's advertised control panel and the maker's supplied manual do not describe the same interface. If the PID controller is the reason you are buying, ask Z Grills to confirm the controller fitted to the unit being sold before you order.

One practical consequence: neither the listing nor the manual pages we read states a usable temperature range in degrees. What the manual does give are alarm thresholds. LEr appears if the grill stays below 120°F for more than 20 minutes, and HEr appears if it reaches 550°F. Er1 points at the temperature probe connection and Er2 is a dial security alarm.

697 square inches, with no published split between the grates

The listing gives 697 square inches as the total. The manual's component list shows one porcelain grill grate and one warming rack, so that total covers a main grate plus a rack above it. Neither the listing nor the manual states how many square inches each one contributes, so plan on the main grate being the usable cooking surface and the warming rack being for holding or for thinner items.

The hopper is listed at 28 pounds and has a view window so you can see the pellet level without lifting the lid. Pellets come out through a cleanout door on the back: place your own bucket or bowl underneath, turn the thumbscrew counterclockwise without removing it, let the pellets fall, then close and lock the door. The manual asks you to keep the hopper dry, because damp pellets swell, break apart and can jam the feed system.

On fuel, the manual says the grill is designed for wood pellets made for pellet grills, tells you not to use pellet fuel labelled as containing additives, and recommends Z Grills' own pellets while saying the company gives no guarantee for other brands and accepts no liability for loss or damage from them. It also warns, in capitals, never to add pellets directly to the firepot.

Outdoors only, on a grounded outlet, and not in the rain

The manual says this grill is for outdoor use only and must not be used in any enclosed area. It prints the standard warning that a major cause of fires is failure to maintain required clearances to combustible materials, but it asks only for a safe distance and does not give a number of inches. Some other makers print an exact clearance; this manual does not, so keep it well clear of siding, railings and furniture and ask Z Grills if you need a figure for a permit or an inspection.

Power is a 110 volt AC grounded outlet, which the manual has you plug in with the switch off. The main power switch cuts power to the controller and the dial cuts power to the grill components only, so the manual tells you to unplug the grill entirely before servicing anything. It also warns not to switch off while the shutdown fan is still running, because interrupting that cycle could start a fire in the hopper chamber.

Two further siting notes come straight from the manual. It says not to use the grill on rainy days, which sits oddly beside a listing that advertises an included rain cover; the cover protects a grill that is not running. And it says never to move the grill while it is operating or hot, so pick the spot before you light it.

Grease, creosote and ash: the routine the manual asks for

Grease collects on the flue lining, in the V-shaped grease drain, in the grease drain tube and on the grease drain pan. The manual asks you to check and clean all of them regularly, warns that a plugged drain tube or a loaded V-drain can cause a grease fire, and says to scrape with a stiff non-metallic tool while the grill is warm rather than hot. It suggests covering the grease drain pan with heavy-duty aluminium foil and changing it often as the simplest way to keep it clean.

The flue needs its own attention: remove the chimney cap and wash it in warm soapy water, then scrape creosote and grease from the vertical and horizontal sections of the flue pipe. The manual says not to spray water or liquid cleaners inside the grill. Outside surfaces get warm soapy water, not oven cleaner or abrasive pads.

Ash should be cleared from the grill interior periodically, and the manual notes that excess ash in the firepot can put the fire out, especially on the SMOKE setting. A shop vacuum is its suggested tool, with the grill off, unplugged and cold. It also asks you to clean the grill grates after each use and to clean the internal RTD temperature probe after each use, which is easy to forget.

Three years, with paint, firepot, cover and corrosion excluded

The manual's warranty is three years from the date of purchase by the original owner, covering defects in materials and workmanship, with repair or replacement of parts or units at Z Grills' option. Amazon's warranty field says the same three years and adds a 30-day money-back line for quality issues, which is a seller statement rather than manual text.

The exclusions are specific. Paint, the firepot, the grill cover and damage caused by corrosion are not covered. Z Grills states it is not liable for transportation charges, labour costs or export duties, so a claim can still cost you freight. Rust or oxidisation is excluded unless there is a loss of structural integrity in the grill components, and the manual lists humidity, high temperature, chlorine, insecticide, salt and disinfectant as things that can attack the coatings.

Coverage also depends on following the manual: Z Grills says it is not liable if you install, operate, clean or maintain the grill without following the owner's manual instructions, and that misuse, abuse, alteration and natural disasters are excluded. Keep your proof of purchase, and note that the manual asks you to have your dealer name, serial number and part number ready when you contact support.
