Power is those two AA lithium cells, which Blink describes as non-rechargeable, with a stated life of up to two years on default settings and a note that customized settings, usage and environmental conditions affect it. Blink lists two optional alternatives sold separately: a Weather Resistant Power Adapter, and an Outdoor 4 Battery Extension Pack available in the US and Canada.

The camera is small, 2.76 by 2.76 by 1.61 inches and 5.0 oz, and the US model number is BCM00500U. It is a fourth-generation camera with a 2023 release date according to Amazon's table.

The hub in this box cannot store anything

This is the single most important thing to understand before buying. Blink's Sync Module Core FAQ carries a note at the top of the article: Sync Module Core is compatible with all Blink cameras, is not sold separately, and does not support Local Storage or Clip Backup. Blink describes the Core as a hub that connects to your Wi-Fi network and relays commands and network details between your cameras and Blink servers.

The listing says the same thing twice, in the first bullet and again under save and share clips: local storage is not included with Sync Module Core. It then names the alternatives, all sold separately: a Sync Module XR with a microSD card, or a Sync Module 2 with a USB flash drive. Blink's camera specification confirms the camera itself is compatible with all Blink Sync Modules, so upgrading the hub later is possible.

Without one of those, recordings go to the cloud. The listing offers a free 30-day trial of a Blink Subscription Plan and its specification table says a plan allows videos to be stored in the cloud for up to 60 days, with a recommendation to download anything you want to keep beyond that to your phone.

What the camera sees and hears

Blink's specification gives 1080p HD video with a 143-degree diagonal field of view at up to 30 fps, and notes that captured still images are viewed at 640 x 360. Night vision is infrared, and Blink describes the LEDs plainly: one blue LED to show the camera is active, which is optional, and one red LED when recording in night vision. Audio is two-way. The listing describes dual-zone enhanced motion detection for faster alerts, which is the free detection layer.

Person detection is not free. The listing states that alerts when a person is detected use embedded computer vision as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan, sold separately. We could not open a Blink page confirming which plan tier includes it, so check Blink's current plan details before relying on that feature.

Weather: an operating range, but no IP rating published

Blink's technical specification for the Outdoor 4 gives an operating temperature of -4 to 113F (-20C to 45C). It does not state an IP rating for the camera anywhere in that specification, which is unusual for a camera sold for outdoor use. If a dust and water rating matters to your position, ask Blink support for it in writing.

The hub is definitely not weatherproof. Blink's Sync Module Core FAQ answers the question directly: no, Sync Module Core is not weather-resistant, Sync Modules are designed for indoor use and should be kept in a dry protected area, and the Core operates between 32F and 104F (0C and 40C).

That gives you two temperature ranges to plan around: the camera outdoors down to -4F, and the hub indoors no colder than 32F. An unheated garage in a cold winter is inside the camera's range but outside the hub's.

Network, phones and Alexa

Blink's specification asks for a high-speed internet connection such as broadband, fibre or DSL, and a 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi network. The camera talks to the Sync Module rather than directly to your router, and the Sync Module is what holds the Wi-Fi connection.

Phone requirements in Amazon's specification table are strict for an inexpensive camera: iOS 17, Android 10, or Fire OS 8 only. Check your phone against that before buying, because an older device may not run the Blink Home Monitor app.

The smart-home integration listed is Alexa: the listing says connecting an Alexa-enabled device lets you run multi-camera live view and arm or disarm the system by voice. No other platform is named in the sources read.

Warranty and what to check before ordering

Amazon's specification table gives a 1-year limited warranty and points to Blink's terms. Blink's technical specification article does not repeat a warranty term, and we did not open Blink's legal and warranties page, so treat one year as the figure to confirm with Blink or the seller.

Two purchase decisions follow from the storage note above. If you want recordings kept without a subscription, price a Sync Module XR with a microSD card or a Sync Module 2 with a USB flash drive at the same time, since the Core in this box will not do it. The battery claim is also worth reading precisely: up to two years is Blink's figure on default settings, and it uses lithium cells you replace rather than recharge.
