A vertical pellet smoker, model 4001294

Amazon's table lists model and part number 4001294 and names the manufacturer as American Outdoor Brands. Grilla's user manual carries 'Product #4001294' on its cover and 'Product Model #4001294' on its last page, and the manual's copyright line reads AOB Products Company. Grilla's product page URL uses the code 4001294B.

The Mammoth is a vertical pellet smoker with a double-wall door and chamber, according to the manual. It lists five stainless steel rod cooking grates that slide out, a hanging rack with 24 S-hooks, a stainless water pan that accepts disposable aluminium pans, a removable heat deflector and a grease catch container that takes 7 by 3 inch disposable foil trays.

The manual's carton list is the pre-assembled body, four legs with casters, five grates, the hanging rack, 24 S-hooks, two meat probes, the heat deflector, water pan, grease catch container, a chimney cover and a hardware package. Amazon's included-components field says only 'Smoker', so check the box against the manual's list.

The hopper: 15 pounds on Amazon, 40 pounds from Grilla

This is the biggest conflict between the sources. An Amazon bullet describes 'the 15 pound hopper' and claims up to 50 hours at 240 degrees on one fill. Grilla's own specification list gives a 40-pound hopper, and the user manual also lists a 40-pound hopper capacity. Grilla's product page separately claims over 48 hours at 250 degrees Fahrenheit on a single hopper fill.

We are reporting both figures, not choosing between them. Two Grilla documents say 40 pounds and the Amazon listing says 15; if hopper size matters to your plans for long cooks, confirm with Grilla before buying.

The manual and Grilla's specification list agree on a temperature range of 180 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, which the manual says is set in 5-degree increments. The Alpha Connect controller has capacitive touch buttons, a colour LCD, two meat probe inputs and Wi-Fi for the Grilla Grills app, according to the manual. Grilla's product page adds PID and PRO modes, Pro Smoke and TempTamer.

Cooking space: 1,660 square inches, or more with extra grates

The manual gives 1,660 square inches of cooking area, at 332 square inches per rack across the five grates, and says it fits up to 16 full racks of ribs; it also mentions turkeys and beer can chickens. Grilla's specification list repeats 1,660 square inches of main cooking space and gives 3,652 square inches with an additional grate.

Grilla's product-page introduction uses a third figure, up to 3,300 square inches, and Amazon's bullet says over 1,600 square inches and up to 10 steel racks or 24 S-hooks. The manual's carton list shows five grates; Grilla's larger figure is labelled as including an additional grate, which the manual does not list as included.

The integrated water pan is described on Amazon as helping with temperature regulation, grease management and moisture; the manual says it is stainless and accepts disposable aluminium pans. Amazon also mentions a lipped deflector for adding wood chunks or chips, and Grilla's page says there is space to burn wood chunks.

36 inches of clearance and a noncombustible floor

The manual requires a minimum of 36 inches from the smoker to combustible construction at the rear and sides, and says not to operate it under a combustible ceiling or overhang. It says to use the smoker only outdoors in a well-ventilated area, on a noncombustible floor and away from combustible materials, and not in a garage, breezeway, tent or other enclosed area.

Electrical cautions in the manual: do not operate the Mammoth in the rain and keep the control panel dry; do not use it within 10 feet of a pool, pond or other body of water; never remove the grounding plug or use a two-prong adapter; and use outdoor extension cords marked W-A. Grilla's specification list gives the power source as a standard three-prong household outlet at 120 volts, 50/60 hertz.

Grilla lists the Mammoth at 59 inches high, 28 inches wide and 28 inches deep, and 130 pounds, in powder-coated steel; Amazon's table gives the same dimensions and weight. The manual says the unit should not be plugged in until it is fully assembled and standing upright.

Foil on the smoke chamber floor and ash every 24 hours

For grease, the manual recommends covering the bottom panel of the smoke chamber with aluminium foil and changing it frequently, leaving the grease drain hole open and never covering the fire pot. It says to change greasy foil before a high-temperature cook; its grease-fire guidance is in the manual.

The manual says to brush the grates after each use, clean ash from the interior and burn pot after 24 hours of total cook time, and clean the temperature sensor. It warns never to use wet pellets, which swell, can jam the auger and can short the igniter, and says not to use stainless steel polish on the cooking grates.

On fuel, the manual approves only barbecue wood pellets and lists specifications including 100 percent hardwood, under 10 percent moisture and less than 2 percent ash. It says not to use pellets labelled as having additives, and notes that some brands with charcoal or alder may burn hotter and cause issues.

Four-year limited warranty, rust excluded

The manual gives a four-year warranty period, and Amazon's field and Grilla's specification list both say four years. It provides repair or replacement, and obligations are limited to replacing covered, failed components. Returned parts must be sent freight prepaid, and the warranty does not cover transportation, labour or export duties.

The warranty does not cover rust or oxidation. It is based on residential use and does not apply to commercial applications, and it excludes damage from misuse, improper handling or modification and purely cosmetic damage.

The manual also states that failing to follow the manual in its entirety voids all warranties. Keep the manual and your purchase record; the manual's warranty-service pages were not part of what we read, so check them before making a claim.
