What it is and what is in the box

The Amazon listing is sold by Amazon.com and gives model SL1690 with UPC 026666816908, which matches the barcode in Schumacher's own product data for the SL1690. Schumacher calls it a 4-in-1 lithium jump starter and portable power pack with a 10W wireless charging pad, USB-A and USB-C ports and an LED light with steady, SOS and strobe modes.

Schumacher's page lists the SL1690 unit, a smart jumper cable assembly, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and the user manual in the box. The manual covers four models, SL1672, SL1673, SL1674 and SL1690, so check that a figure is listed for the SL1690 before relying on it; the ones on this page are. Schumacher's specification table lists the battery compatibility type as lead-acid.

Engine rating first: 9.0L gas and 7.0L diesel

Schumacher's product page says the SL1690 can jump start gas engines up to 9.0 liters and diesel engines up to 7.0 liters, and the Amazon bullets give the same figures. The manual does not state an engine size, so the engine rating comes from the page and the listing only.

The manual lists the SL1690 at 2000A peak, the page's specification table says 2000A peak output current, and the manual's table gives its battery as 37 Wh. The manual lists the three smaller models in the same book as max figures rather than peak, and neither document says how the peak figure is measured, so compare jump starters on engine rating rather than amps.

Start limits, charge level and the override

The manual says the internal battery must have at least 50 percent charge to jump start a vehicle, and not to use the jump starter while its own battery is charging. It says to crank for no more than 5 to 8 seconds and then wait at least 1 minute, and not to try more than three consecutive times; if the vehicle still will not start, consult a service technician.

If the vehicle battery is too low for the unit to detect, holding the smart cable's Override button for 3 seconds allows a manual start. The manual warns that this overrides a safety feature: it energizes the clamps, which will spark if they touch, and a shorted or reversed connection will damage the unit, the battery and possibly the car's electrical system. The connection steps, explosive gas warnings and first-aid text are in the manual; read them there before the first jump.

Pre-Boost, Pre-Heat and IP65 are page claims, not manual text

Schumacher's page and the Amazon bullets describe Pre-Boost and Pre-Heat features for deeply discharged batteries and cold weather. The manual read here does not mention either; for cold weather it describes turning on the vehicle's lights and accessories for one minute with the jump starter connected, to warm its lithium battery, before cranking again.

Schumacher's page text and the Amazon bullets also claim an IP65 dust and water rating, but the specification table on the same page reads IP Rating: No Rating, and the manual gives no IP rating and says not to expose the unit to rain or snow. Treat the SL1690 as a unit to keep dry until Schumacher confirms which statement applies.

Temperature, charging and where to keep it

The manual gives a charging range of 32 to 113°F and a discharging range of -4 to 122°F, and says storage should be between -4 and 113°F. It says not to let the internal battery freeze and never to charge a frozen battery. For outdoor use it says the device shall be stored indoors and protected from the elements and shall not be charged outdoors.

Schumacher's page and the Amazon bullets say the SL1690 fits in a glove box, so a buyer planning to keep it in the car should weigh that against the manual's indoor storage line and its storage temperature range. The manual asks for a charge after purchase, after each use and every 30 days or when the level falls below 75 percent, and gives 4 to 5 hours with an 18W USB charger, which is not included.

Ports, weight and the 2-year warranty

The manual gives each USB port up to 5V at 3A, 9V at 2A or 12V at 1.5A, dropping to 5V at 2.2A each when both are in use, and a 10W maximum on the wireless pad. Schumacher's specification table gives a weight of 1.74 pounds, a 3.58 by 1.69 by 3.58 inch body and a cable reach of 1.3 feet, while the manual names the SA946 jump cable as the only recommended attachment and lists replacement part 94500946Z for the clamps and smart cable.

Schumacher's page and manual both give a two-year limited warranty. The page says it covers defects in material or workmanship under normal use, with repair or replacement at Schumacher's discretion once proof of purchase is provided; the manual gives 1-800-621-5485 for repairs and returns. Keep your Amazon order record as that proof.
