What this listing is

This is the Serta Smart Layers Jennings big and tall chair in black bonded leather with a slate frame. The Amazon listing gives manufacturer part number 45314. The assembly booklet lists 45314 as one of three Jennings models, and Office Depot's Black and Slate page, item 304574, shows manufacturer number 45314.

The booklet calls it a Big and Tall Manager Chair and says the Serta Smart Layers trademark is used under licence by Living Style (Singapore), with the chair distributed by ODP Business Sourcing and made in Vietnam. The listing names Serta as manufacturer and shows UPC 656292453149, while Office Depot shows UPC 735854725716, so compare the label under the seat with the listing when it arrives.

The weight rating conflict

The listing's maximum weight field says 250 pounds, but its own description says commercial grade components support up to 400 pounds. The booklet's cover says the chair supports up to 400 pounds, its notes give a maximum of 400 pounds or 181 kilograms, and Office Depot's page also lists 400 pounds.

The listing contradicts itself, and this page reports both figures rather than choosing one. If your weight is above 250 pounds, ask the seller to confirm in writing that the unit you will receive carries the 400 lb label before ordering.

Assembly and floors

The listing says no assembly is required. The booklet contradicts that: it lists the base, casters, gas lift, seat plate, seat, back, two arms, knobs, bolts and an Allen key, and gives seven assembly steps. Office Depot's page also says assembly is required.

The listing's surface field says Hard Floor. The booklet says the included casters are intended for carpet and not recommended on tile or hardwood, may damage those floors, and suggests a chair mat. Plan on a mat if your office floor is hard.

What you can adjust

The seat-height lever is under the right side of the seat. For the tilt-lockout lever on the left, the booklet says push it down and lean back to tilt, and sit upright and pull it up to lock. A round black knob under the front centre sets tilt tension, and turning it clockwise makes rocking easier.

The arms adjust in two ways. Knobs under the arms at the bottom of the seat loosen to set arm width and tighten to hold it, and buttons on the armrests let you raise or lower them. The booklet notes that if the arms wobble in use, you should re-tighten those knobs. It describes no lumbar or headrest adjustment.

Size and the listing's measurements

Office Depot lists item 304574 at 43-1/4 inches high, 28-1/4 inches wide and 32-1/2 inches deep, with a seat 28-1/4 inches long and 22 inches wide and a floor-to-seat height from 20-1/2 to 23-1/2 inches. It rates the chair for professional use of 8 to 10 hours a day.

The listing gives 32.5 by 28.25 by 43.25 inches and a weight of 66 pounds, but its seat-depth field repeats the 32.5-inch overall depth. Its colour field says Clear, although the title says Black and Slate. Treat the listing's detail fields with caution and rely on the booklet and Office Depot for fit.

Upkeep and warranty

The booklet asks you to re-tighten bolts every 90 days with the supplied Allen key and not to use power tools. The chair is for indoor use only, away from direct sun, heat and damp, and you should not stand on the seat. Clean the upholstery with a damp cloth only, and use a professional upholstery cleaner for persistent stains.

The warranty covers the original purchase for ten years against defects in materials and workmanship, but fabrics, foam, veneer finishes and other coverings are covered for one year. A receipt is required, remedies are repair, replacement or an Office Depot merchandise card refund, and the warranty applies only in the United States and Canada.
