Steelcase Amia Office Chair, Black Fabric, Carpet Casters

People who want a manual-adjust task chair with hidden lumbar support

Amia pairs Steelcase's hidden LiveLumbar support with seat height and depth, recline tension, an upright lock and 4D arms. Steelcase lists style 4821410 at 16 to 21 inches of seat height and a 400-pound rating. The listing's weight and warranty figures differ from Steelcase's, and warranty cover depends on an authorised seller.

Style 4821410: what the number covers

Amazon lists this chair as Amia, model and part number 4821410, in black with carpet casters. Steelcase's own product data uses exactly that number as the Steelcase style for Amia, so the listing ties cleanly to the maker. The listing also carries a Steelcase installation sheet headed 482 Amia, which matches the family code.

One detail needs checking. Steelcase's specification data lists style 4821410 under both the Amia Chair and the Amia Armless Chair, while the listing promises 4D arms that adjust for height, width, pivot and depth. Before you order, confirm with the seller that the chair ships with arms, and check the box contents when it arrives.

Sizes from Steelcase, and the listing's different numbers

Steelcase gives style 4821410 a width of 26.625 inches, a depth of 21.75 to 24.75 inches, an overall height of 37.25 to 42.5 inches and a seat height of 16 to 21 inches. Measure your desk and the space behind it against those ranges rather than against the listing.

Amazon's table shows two different sets of overall dimensions, 27.5 by 21.25 by 32.5 inches and 24.75 by 26.63 by 42.5 inches, alongside a seat height of 21 inches and a seat depth of 18.5 inches. The second set matches Steelcase's maximum figures; the first does not match any maker figure we read.

Weight differs too. Steelcase's data gives 48 pounds for this style, while Amazon lists 54.5 pounds without saying whether that includes packaging. The listing also says the chair requires assembly, so allow for that when it arrives.

The adjustments you get

Steelcase's hang tag labels the controls: seat height, seat depth, recline tension, an upright back lock and 4D arms that adjust height, depth, width and pivot. Its LiveLumbar system, hidden inside the upholstered back, provides spring force in the lower back and is height adjustable.

The product page describes the adjustments as manual and labelled, with a full recline range that can be locked upright, flexible seat edges and adaptive bolstering. Amia Air is a different back design; this listing is the upholstered Amia with LiveLumbar.

Casters, fabric and parts

Amazon's size field says carpet casters and its description says hard casters. Steelcase's product page lists a polished aluminium base and casters among the options but does not describe caster types for carpet or hard floors, so confirm the casters suit your floor before you buy.

The listing names Buzz2 black fabric. Steelcase's current product page lists Platinum, Black and Merle finishes and does not name Buzz2; Buzz2 appears only in the undated Steelcase warranty exceptions page attached to the listing, which puts it among 12-year seating textiles.

The Steelcase installation sheet on the listing is for replacing the height-adjustment handle, and it shows the seat coming off with a quick-release tab and the seat slide lever. For problems it directs you to your local dealer or Steelcase Line 1 at 888.783.3522.

Load rating

Steelcase's product page says Amia and Amia Air are durable enough to handle weight up to 400 pounds, and the hang tag says the chair is weight tested and warrantied to 400 pounds. Amazon's maximum weight recommendation field repeats 400 pounds, so all three sources agree on this figure.

Steelcase's page lists certifications including BIFMA Level 3 and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold, offers a CarbonNeutral option, and names Amia among the chairs in its Circular by Steelcase Remade programme.

Which warranty applies to an Amazon purchase

The sources give three answers. Amazon's warranty field says five years. Steelcase's product page and hang tag advertise a Limited Lifetime Warranty of 12 years, multi-shift, 24/7 parts and labour. Steelcase's Americas warranty document then says it does not apply to products sold at retail to consumers, who are pointed to a separate consumer warranty we could not find.

Steelcase's store FAQ says the consumer warranty applies only to products bought directly from store.steelcase.com or a Steelcase Authorized Retailer by buyers in the US or Canada. The Americas document also lets Steelcase reject claims for products from unauthorised sellers, including unauthorised internet sites. Confirm that the seller of the offer you choose is authorised before relying on either warranty.
