What this listing is

This is the Steelcase Karman mesh task chair, listed as Seagull Frame and Merlot Mesh, with a model number field of Karman. Steelcase's Karman page lists Intermix Merlot and Intermix Opaque Merlot among its textiles; Intermix is the name Steelcase gives the woven textile it describes as exclusive to Karman, sold in translucent, opaque and colour-shifting versions.

The listing's manufacturer part number, SXFR8HJH8Y44Q24PJJ, appears in no Steelcase document we read, and neither Steelcase page decodes a frame colour called Seagull for Karman. Steelcase's page says base and arm finishes come in standard plastic or paint colours, a Lux finish or polished aluminium. Match the photos to what you want, because the model name is the only identifier we could confirm.

The seat depth is fixed, by design

This is the fact most likely to decide whether Karman suits you. Steelcase's store says Karman was designed with a fixed seat depth, and that as you choose your recline position the seat flexes to keep you balanced over your sit bones. There is no seat slide to shorten or lengthen the seat for your thigh length.

Steelcase describes the seat as a patented hybrid: a suspension seat with integrated cushioning. The product page adds a comfort edge and an ultra-light frame that flexes. If you have found other chairs' seats too long or too short for your legs, test the fixed depth before you commit, since nothing on the chair adjusts it.

One comfort dial with four settings

Steelcase's store says Karman has one control for both back tension and recline. Its comfort dial has four positions: weight-activated full recline; weight-activated full recline with more resistance than your body provides; a mid-stop recline setting; and an upright lock. Steelcase's product page also describes the dial as supporting four recline positions.

The listing's reclining position count says three. Steelcase's two pages agree with each other on four, so use the maker figure. The arms are described on the product page as 4D: they raise and lower, pivot in and out, and shift in all directions.

Lumbar: built in, with a sliding pad as an option

Steelcase's store says Karman includes built-in lumbar support in every chair, and that an optional adjustable lumbar can be added, which slides up or down to fit your back. The product page lists optional lumbar support among Karman's options, and the store's configurator offers No Adjustable Lumbar and Adjustable Lumbar as separate choices.

The Amazon listing does not say which lumbar configuration this unit has; its included-components field lists only a cushion. If you want the sliding pad, confirm with the seller before ordering. Steelcase's store also says it does not offer a headrest for Karman, although the product page mentions a high-back version with a neck support pillow.

Casters and listing measurements

Steelcase's product page lists four caster types for Karman: soft dual-wheel roll-control, hard dual-wheel roll-control, hard hubless and soft hubless, plus glides. The store sells separate Wheels for Carpet and Wheels for Hard Floors versions. The Amazon listing's surface recommendation says Hard Floor, and the title says nothing about floors, so confirm the caster with the seller.

Amazon's table gives 29.5 inches deep, 32.5 inches wide and 29.5 inches high, a weight of 47 pounds and a backrest width of 17.38 inches. We found no Steelcase dimension table to check any of these figures against, so treat them as retail data only. The listing says no assembly is required.

No published weight rating, and the retail warranty

Neither Steelcase page we read gives a user weight rating for Karman, and the listing does not either. Ask Steelcase directly for a figure in writing if your weight is a consideration, rather than assuming one from another source.

Steelcase's Karman page says it is backed by the Steelcase Limited Lifetime Warranty. The June 2026 Americas warranty PDF gives seating mechanisms, lumbar mechanisms, cylinders, arm caps, foam and casters a 12-year term, but says it does not apply to products sold at retail to consumers. Steelcase's store FAQ says the consumer warranty applies only to purchases from store.steelcase.com or a Steelcase Authorized Retailer in the United States or Canada.

The Americas PDF also lets Steelcase reject claims on products bought from unauthorised sellers, including unauthorised internet sites. Check who the seller is on the offer you select, and ask Steelcase whether that seller is authorised before buying.
