Weber Smoque XL, part 1500771

Amazon's table lists model and part number 1500771, and Weber's product page shows the same part number for the Weber Smoque XL Pellet Smoker. Weber's manuals search for 1500771 returns an assembly guide and owner's guides for the Smoque range; the US owner's guide in that list carries a Smoque XL US parts diagram.

Weber's product page gives 918 square inches of total cooking area, split into 595 square inches of primary cooking area and a 323 square inch warming rack. It lists plated steel cooking grates, one side table, two all-weather wheels, two meat probes included and a 500 degree maximum. The owner's guide gives the full range as 180 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The owner's guide describes a hopper sized to hold an entire 20-pound bag of pellets, glow-plug ignition that switches off once the pellets catch, a DC-powered engine Weber calls Rapid React PID, a porcelain-enamelled lid, and an ambient probe plus two food probes, with the controller taking two food probes.

Size, weight and what Weber sells separately

Weber's specification panel gives 44.5 inches high, 50.75 inches wide and 22.5 inches deep with the lid closed, rising to 60 inches high with the lid open, and 110 pounds. Amazon's table matches the width, height and weight but lists the depth as 20.4 inches. Neither source explains the difference.

The product page lists a bottom shelf for the Smoque XL, a premium cover and a Weber Works side table as separate accessories, along with folding side and front tables. It also says the smoker is compatible with Weber's Crafted outdoor kitchen collection once you add a separately sold frame kit.

The owner's guide recommends a large Weber drip pan on the lower grates when cooking on the top rack over long periods. It also says to keep the lid closed, and the product page's heat-up claim of 15 minutes or less is footnoted as based on lab conditions at 77 degrees Fahrenheit with Weber pellets.

Placement: two feet of clearance and a grounded outlet

The owner's guide says not to use the grill within 2 feet of any combustible material, naming wood or treated wood decks, patios, porches, vinyl siding and patio doors, and not to use it under any overhead combustible construction, including ceilings and overhangs. It also says not to use it within 10 feet of any body of water such as a pool or pond, or in high winds.

The guide's electrical specifications give 120 volts, 60 hertz and 1.3 amps. It says the grill should only be connected to a grounded outlet, without plug adapters. If you need an extension cord, it must be a 14-gauge cable with a grounded plug suitable for outdoor appliances, no longer than 13 feet, kept as short as possible.

The guide says to keep the power cord and any extension cord away from heated surfaces and water and routed so it does not create a tripping hazard, and to unplug the grill when not in use. It also suggests moving closer to the Wi-Fi router or adding a signal extender if the Weber Connect connection is weak where the smoker stands.

Grease and ash end up in one drawer

Weber describes an enclosed grease and ash management system: ash collects in the cookbox, grease goes to a grease catch, and no vacuum is needed. The owner's guide says to clean the grease sheet and empty the grease catch before every cook, and to replace the disposable drip pan frequently.

The guide says to scrape the grill after every low-and-slow cook and recommends a thorough clean after 12 hours or 9 cook sessions. It says cleaning must be done with the grill cooled and unplugged, and it warns never to remove the ash and grease drawer while the grill is running or still hot.

The guide also cautions never to spray the grill with a garden hose or pressure washer, because electronic components could be damaged. Weber's online Smoque user guide repeats the 12-hour or 9-session cleaning interval.

The hopper and auger need regular emptying

One maintenance item stands out in the owner's guide: Weber recommends emptying and clearing the hopper and auger tube every 4 weeks with regular use and every 2 weeks without regular use, and more often in high humidity. The procedure starts with a release handle on the hopper; this page does not reproduce the steps.

Clearing the auger tube involves opening a maintenance panel and removing the auger and motor assembly, which the owner's guide covers in its hopper-cleaning section. Read that section before you commit to the schedule; the guide says to contact Weber for a replacement if the auger's shear pin is broken.

Weber stresses pellet quality: the owner's guide says pellets should snap cleanly, give off little dust and not look faded or white. Both the owner's guide and Weber's online Smoque user guide say to store pellets indoors in an airtight container.

Warranty by component, and the registration advice

The owner's guide lists warranty periods of 5 years for the cook box and all components not otherwise listed, 3 years for electrical components, and 3 years for cooking grates, burn pot and heat diffuser. Amazon's warranty field gives the same 5 and 3 years but lists the 3-year parts as cooking grates, pellet slide, burn pot, heat baffle, pellet grate and controller bezel, a slightly different list.

The warranty is extended to the original purchaser, or the gift recipient, and is not transferable. It requires assembly, use and maintenance as the guide describes; in coastal areas or near a pool, that includes regular washing of exterior surfaces. It lapses for damage from abuse, neglect, improper assembly, insects or rodents, and exposure to salt air or chlorine, among other exclusions.

Weber says registering online is important but not required, and asks you to keep your original receipt. It may ask you to return parts for inspection with shipping prepaid by you. The product page advertises a 5-year limited warranty; the owner's guide shows shorter 3-year periods for electrical components, grates, burn pot and heat diffuser.
