It replaces your thumbturn, not your lock
This is a retrofit, and that single fact decides whether it suits you. The installation guide has you unlock the deadbolt, unscrew the existing interior thumbturn and its back plate, fit a mounting plate in its place and clamp the August unit onto it with two side wing latches. The keyed exterior cylinder stays exactly where it is.
So your existing keys keep working, the outside of your door does not change, and anyone with a key can still get in. There is no exterior keypad, no touchscreen and no reader of any kind, because nothing is fitted to the outside face. Entry from outside is by key, by someone letting you in through the app, or by the optional Auto-Unlock as you approach with your phone.
Worth flagging: Amazon's structured fields for this listing say special feature biometric verification and lock type biometric. Neither the installation guide nor the warranty document describes a fingerprint reader, and the guide describes a device fitted only to the inside of the door. Do not buy this expecting a fingerprint.
Whether it fits comes down to your deadbolt, not your door
August says the lock is compatible with most single-cylinder deadbolts and publishes a deadbolt compatibility list on its support site, which the guide links to. Because it clamps over an existing lock rather than boring into the door, the usual measurements of thickness, backset and bore size are not what you check. Your deadbolt brand and tailpiece are.
Adapters are how it copes with different brands. The guide has you pick an adapter from a compatibility chart, or slide each supplied adapter onto the tailpiece until you find the one whose tooth points up. An optional cover plate is included for oversized deadbolt holes that the mounting plate alone will not hide.
There is one test worth doing before you finish. The guide says to make sure the back of the lock sits flush with the door and that the lock can lock and unlock the deadbolt manually by rotating the outer shell. If the deadbolt does not move freely by hand at that point, stop and sort the deadbolt out before finishing.
Wi-Fi is built in, on 2.4GHz, with an account
The guide's what-you-need list is specific: a Phillips screwdriver, the August app for iOS or Android, a smartphone and a Wi-Fi internet connection at 802.11 b, g or n on 2.4GHz. There is no bridge or hub to buy, which the listing makes a selling point, but there is also no mention of 5GHz support anywhere we read.
Setup requires an account. The guide's final step tells you to download the free August app, create an account, then choose Set up a device, Set up a smart lock, and the Wi-Fi Smart Lock 4th Generation entry. If a cloud account is something you would rather avoid, this lock is not for you.
The listing says built-in Wi-Fi lets the lock work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings, while Amazon's structured controller field lists Alexa, Google Assistant and Vera. Neither maker document we read names any of those integrations, so confirm the current list with August before buying for a specific platform.
DoorSense, batteries and the small stuff people miss
A DoorSense sensor is listed in the box contents in the installation guide. The listing pairs it with Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock, and the guide lists it in the box. The guide does not print the DoorSense fitting steps and sends you to an August support page instead.
Power is CR123 batteries, not AA, and they come in the box. The guide's step is simply to hold them in place and pull out the plastic isolation tab, then check they are seated. Neither maker document we read gives a battery life figure, so treat any number you see elsewhere as unverified.
One packing discrepancy to check on arrival: Amazon's included-components field lists the lock, batteries and mounting hardware, while the installation guide's box contents also list the DoorSense sensor, the lock adapters and a strip of tape. The tape matters more than it sounds, because the guide uses it to hold the keyed exterior half in place while you work.
August says the lock itself is not BHMA certified
This is the most important sentence in either document and it sits inside the warranty. August states that the August Device is not an ANSI or BHMA certified door lock and must be correctly installed and used with a certified door lock that is operating in good condition.
That is a maker statement, not our opinion. The device attaches to the inside of an existing deadbolt that August does not supply, and the warranty separately excludes damage from third-party products or systems.
For anyone whose insurer, landlord or local rules ask for a graded lock, that means the grade has to come from the deadbolt underneath. Check what your existing deadbolt is certified to before assuming a smart upgrade changes anything about its rating.
One year of cover, with conditions worth reading
The warranty document gives a one-year limited hardware warranty from the date of purchase, running only to the person or entity that originally bought the device from August or one of its authorised resellers or distributors, and only for devices bought and delivered within the United States or Canada.
Service is not a simple swap. You must get a return authorisation number from August customer support, the number stays valid for thirty days, and the device must be shipped freight prepaid with proof of purchase and all accessories. August warns that failing to return accessories may cause delay or an invoice for the missing parts, and that if it decides the unit is not defective you reimburse it for inspection, testing and repair plus shipping.
Exclusions include accident, misuse, abuse, negligence, commercial use, modification, damage from third-party products or systems, improper voltage, use outside the written instructions, normal wear and tear, and repair by anyone August has not authorised. Consumable parts, batteries specifically, are not covered. Replacement units are warranted for one year from shipment.
