A full deadbolt replacement, not a retrofit over your thumbturn
This is the Century trim version of the Schlage Encode in matte black, model BE489WBCEN622. It replaces the whole deadbolt: the quick start guide's first step is to remove your existing deadbolt including the bolt, and its parts list covers a touchscreen assembly, inside assembly, backplate, bolt, strike, strike reinforcement plate and a backup key.
That matters if you were comparing it against retrofit locks that clamp over an existing thumbturn and keep your current keys. Here your old key no longer works, and the lock ships with one physical backup key of its own according to the listing bullets.
Amazon's included-components field lists only installation hardware and installation instructions, while the bullets say four AA batteries and a backup key are included and the quick start guide illustrates the key in the parts list. Check the box contents on arrival rather than assuming the structured field is complete.
The exact door it fits, in Schlage's own numbers
The door preparation sheet is unusually direct: if the door is thinner than one and three eighths of an inch or thicker than one and three quarters, the lock will not fit properly. Schlage says a thick door kit is available from its product support line for doors outside that range, so a thick door is solvable but not out of the box.
Backset can be either two and three eighths or two and three quarter inches, the two options the door preparation sheet allows. A door with no holes needs a two and one eighth inch cross bore and a one inch hole in the door edge, with the lock centreline marked 38 inches from the finished floor.
The supplied bolt is adjustable rather than fixed. The quick start guide tells you to check that the slot in the bolt is centred in the hole and, if not, to twist the faceplate to extend it to the longer backset. Measure your existing bore and backset before ordering, because none of this is adjustable after the fact.
Wi-Fi is built in, so there is no bridge to buy or lose
Schlage's product page describes built-in Wi-Fi paired with the Schlage Home app for remote locking and unlocking, custom access codes and lock history. The Amazon description adds that no extra accessory or hub is needed because the lock joins your home Wi-Fi directly, and that it can also be managed through the Key by Amazon app.
Amazon's structured connectivity field lists Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and its controller field names Alexa, Google Assistant and Vera. Schlage's own page says the lock pairs with Alexa and Google Assistant. None of the documents we read describes Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter or Thread support for this model, so do not assume it joins a hub-based system.
On the lock itself, the quick start guide explains the touchscreen icons: a communication icon flashes while the lock connects to Wi-Fi to check for updates, and the home button both turns on the keypad backlight and starts the Wi-Fi connection process. Setup begins when you enter one of the two default user codes on the keypad.
How you get in, and how you get locked out
Entry methods are the touchscreen keypad, the app, a voice assistant paired through the app, the inside thumbturn and the physical backup key. There is no fingerprint reader on this model, and nothing we read describes a hands-free auto-unlock that senses your approach, only auto-lock in the other direction.
The listing says the lock manages up to 100 access codes, that auto-lock offers a choice of time delays or can be turned off entirely, and that one-touch locking from the exterior touchscreen locks up as you leave. The quick start guide confirms the inside thumbturn works mechanically in both directions.
Power is four AA batteries, with the listing claiming up to six months of life in typical use and the quick start guide showing a low-battery icon on the touchscreen. Read the quick start guide's own wording carefully: the low-battery icon goes solid when the battery is critical and the lock will not work without new batteries. Nothing we read describes an emergency external power contact, so the backup key is the fallback.
Installation is screwdriver-only, with one real warning
Schlage repeats the same instruction on three separate pages of the quick start guide: do not use a power drill, you may damage your lock. A Phillips screwdriver is the only tool listed for fitting the lock to a door that already has holes, and the listing claims installation takes minutes with a Snap and Stay design that holds the lock on the door while you work.
One routing detail from the guide concerns the cable. It goes through the door below the bolt and then under the bolt again and through the hole at the bottom of the backplate, and the connector tucks into the space above the spindle. Follow the guide's diagrams for that step rather than forcing the cable through another path.
The strike reinforcement plate is included, but the guide flags a limit: if you have a window next to your door, you may not be able to use the longer wood screws for the reinforcer. Check your door frame before counting on that part.
Certification wording, alarm and warranty
Schlage's Encode page says the lock is backed by a best-in-class BHMA rating in security, durability and finish, and the Amazon bullet says it is certified with the highest residential security, durability and finish rating by BHMA. Neither of the two documents supplied with the listing states a BHMA grade, and no certificate was read, so ask Schlage for the grade in writing if it matters for an insurer or a landlord.
The listing describes a built-in customisable alarm that reacts to door movement and forced entry attempts, an encrypted connection and a fingerprint-resistant touchscreen. None of those is quantified in the documents we read, and no weather or ingress rating appears anywhere, which is worth knowing for an exposed door with no storm door.
Amazon's warranty field, written by the brand, gives a limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranty with a limited three-year electronics warranty, and adds a condition worth reading twice: it says the warranty is valid only on purchases that ship from and are sold by Amazon or Build.com. If you buy from a third-party seller on the same listing, check that condition before you order.
