What arrives: one AP-1512HH and one set of filters already inside
This ASIN is the black Airmega Mighty, model number AP-1512HH, listed by Coway. The manual covers AP-1512HH, AP-1512HH(B) and AP-1512HH(W), which are the same machine in black and white. The listing's included-components field lists the AP-1512HH filter set and the user manual, and the manual's first step is to open the front cover, pull the filters out and strip the plastic bag off each one before running the unit. If you skip that step the machine runs but filters nothing.
The maker gives the body as 16.8 inches wide, 18.3 high and 9.6 deep, and 12.3 pounds, on a 120 V 60 Hz supply drawing 77 watts. The manual asks for a dedicated grounded outlet rather than a shared power strip, and it is an indoor household appliance only. Controls are five buttons on the top: power, speed, ionizer, timer and filter reset, with a coloured air-quality ring above them.
The 1,748 sq ft headline is the weakest of three coverage figures
The Amazon title says up to 1,748 ft². Coway's own documents explain what that number is: the one-sheet and the current manual both print three coverage figures for the same machine, and both print the footnote that defines them. 361 ft² is 4.8 air changes per hour, meaning the room's air passes through once every 12.5 minutes. 874 ft² is two air changes per hour, once every 30 minutes. 1,748 ft² is one air change per hour, once every 60 minutes. All three assume an 8-foot ceiling.
Coway's own footnote says its coverage rating is based on two air changes per hour, and the product page's body text says the unit maintains pure air in rooms up to 361 square feet. So the maker's stated design room is 361 ft², the maker's own coverage-rating basis gives 874 ft², and the figure the listing title leads with is the single-air-change number. If you are matching this to a room, use 361 ft² for a bedroom you want cleaned quickly and 874 ft² as the outer limit, not 1,748.
CADR is published, but the sources do not agree on how many numbers there are
Coway's product page and one-sheet both give Clean Air Delivery Rate as 233 for smoke, 246 for dust and 240 for pollen. The current user manual's specification table for the same model gives only one CADR figure, 233 (Smoke), and no dust or pollen number. None of the Coway documents read here name the standard or the certifying body behind those CADR figures, and none of them carries an AHAM verification mark, so treat them as maker-published values rather than third-party verified ones.
Coway does name test bodies for its particle claims, and the two it names disagree. The listing's A+ footnotes credit KCL (Korea Conformity Laboratories) under Korea Air Cleaning Association standard SPS-KACA 002-132:2022 Modified; the maker's one-sheet credits KCL under SPS-KACA 002-132:2018 Modified, in a 30 m³ chamber, at maximum fan speed. Both say the 99.999% figure at 0.01 microns is a chamber result and that performance varies in a real room. The manuals' simpler claim is the useful one: a True HEPA filter rated to remove 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns.
Filters: one washable, two you buy, on two different clocks
Both listing manuals print the same maintenance table. The pre-filter is cleaned, not replaced, every two to four weeks, with a vacuum or with water, and must be bone dry before it goes back in. The deodorization filter is replaced every six months. The True HEPA filter is replaced every year. Coway adds that those lives are calculated on eight hours a day at maximum fan speed, so a unit that runs all day on auto in a dusty room will reach the indicator sooner.
The replacement parts are sold as one set shared with the Airmega 200M, listed by Coway under SKU 3304899, 3109905 or 3118096, containing one HEPA filter and two deodorization filters. Coway sells the deodorization half in four versions — Fresh Starter, Allergen, Intense Smoke and Pet — so the odour filter you choose is a real decision, not a formality. The washable pre-filter is a separate accessory. The panel has Odor and HEPA indicator lights and a reset button you hold for two seconds after a change.
Placement, clearance and what the sensor can and cannot do
Every version of the manual gives the same clearance rule: at least 20 cm (about 8 inches) from walls and adjacent objects while running, and 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches) of free space above the unit, because the air outlet is on the top. It also asks for at least 2 m from electronics such as a TV, no sloped surfaces, no direct sunlight or strong artificial light on the unit, and nothing blocking the airflow around it. A 16.8-inch-wide body therefore wants roughly a 33-inch-wide slot and two feet of headroom.
The air-quality ring is driven by a dust sensor, and the manual is candid about its limits. If the ring stays red after two hours of running, or stays at the lowest level for more than an hour when the air does not seem clean, the manual's own answer is to change the sensor's sensitivity, which is a user setting with three steps. The sensor also needs cleaning every two months with a soft brush and a lightly damped cotton swab, and the manual says performance deteriorates without it. Auto mode only picks between speeds 1, 2 and 3; Eco mode stops the fan completely after 30 minutes with no pollution detected, so an Eco unit that has gone silent is not broken.
Where the sources conflict, and what the 3-year warranty actually covers
Four conflicts are worth knowing before you buy. Filtration stages: the listing, the product page and the one-sheet all describe four stages including a bipolar device, called the Vital Ionizer, while the current manual's specification table lists three filters and no bipolar device, and the older listing guide's purification diagram also shows three. Speeds: the product page and one-sheet say five stages (Auto-1-2-3-Eco) and the newer listing manual matches, but the current manual's specification table says three stages and the older listing guide's speed button cycles 1-2-3-Auto with no Eco step. Noise: Coway's product page says 24 to 53 dB(A), its one-sheet says 24.4 to 55.1 dB(A) in the table and 22 dB(A) at the lowest speed in its own prose, and the Amazon table says 53 dB; none of them states the distance or test condition. Sensor calibration: the newer manual enters the adjustment by holding speed plus ionizer for two seconds, the older one by holding speed alone — check which panel behaviour your unit follows rather than assuming.
On ozone, the maker's current manual states the product complies with a maximum allowable ozone concentration of 0.050 ppmv over a 24-hour period, and cites the Health Canada 2010 guideline of 0.020 ppmv or less over 8 hours when tested in a sealed controlled room of about 30 m³. The Amazon details table adds a 'CARB Certified' field, which we did not find repeated on any Coway page or manual read here. The ionizer has its own button and can be turned off. On warranty, the 3-year figure in the title is not whole-unit coverage: Coway's warranty table gives one year on any internal or functional part and three years on motor and electronic parts for this model family. Coverage runs to the original retail purchaser only, on new units from authorised sellers, and excludes used, open-box and refurbished units. Coway requires proof of original purchase and a video of the issue, excludes any fault caused by non-genuine filters, and the warranty contains a binding individual arbitration clause you can opt out of only by certified mail within 30 days of purchase. Check the seller and condition of the offer you select before relying on any of it.
