A knob, three speeds and a UV button - nothing else
The AC4825E is a 22-inch triangular tower, 10.25 inches wide and 6.75 inches deep, weighing 8.55 pounds and running on a 120 V outlet at 55 watts. Air is drawn in through the back grille, passes a combined pre-filter and charcoal layer, then a True HEPA layer, then past an optional UV-C lamp, and leaves through the top. The box contains the tower, one HEPA filter, one UV-C bulb and the manual.
The controls are a rotary power knob with low, medium and high, plus a UV button that toggles the lamp and, held for five seconds, resets the filter-change indicator. The maker's own attribute list confirms what is absent: no timer, no auto mode, no sleep mode, no particle sensor, no air quality monitor, no ioniser, no app and no remote. If you want a machine that reacts to the room, this is not that machine. The single power light tells you it is on, and turns red and flashes when the filter is due.
743 square feet is one pass an hour; the CADR numbers are modest
Both the listing and the maker say the same thing in the same words: this circulates and filters the air in a 153 ft² room every 12.5 minutes, or a 743 ft² space once an hour. Those are the two ends of the same measurement. 153 ft² is the size at which the air gets turned over roughly 4.8 times an hour, which is the figure worth sizing to. 743 ft² is one pass an hour, which is what the listing title's 'large room' framing rests on.
The manual itself declines to print CADR, saying only that CADR compares how fast units filter air and to refer to the website for individual model numbers. The maker's page does publish them: 99 CFM for smoke, 118 for dust and 125 for pollen. No standard or certifying body is named alongside them on the page we read, and the Amazon details table omits CADR entirely. For scale, those figures sit well below the 143 to 250 CFM range of other popular purifiers in this size class, which is consistent with the modest 153 ft² fast-turnover figure.
Filter B, about six months, and no washing
The consumable is a single combination cartridge the maker calls Filter B: pre-filter and charcoal bonded to a True HEPA layer. The base part number is FLT4825, with FLT4825SM for smoke, FLT4850PT for pets, FLT4825VO and FLT420B listed as further options, so the cartridge choice is how you tune this to a problem. The manual says the filter lasts approximately six months depending on usage, and the power light turns red and flashes when it is time. Reset is the UV button held for five seconds.
Two maintenance rules from the manual matter. First, do not try to wash and re-use the combination filter; the only cleaning it allows is vacuuming loose debris off the carbon layer to prolong its life, and peeling back the carbon layer to see whether the pleated filter has gone grey. Second, the maker sells a separate four-pack of carbon filters, FLT22CB4, for the 22-inch purifiers. The manual and the maker's page both repeat in capitals that only genuine Guardian Technologies replacement parts should be used, and the troubleshooting table's first check for a dead unit is whether the filter fitted is a genuine one.
The UV-C lamp is optional, contains mercury, and needs a screwdriver
The UV-C stage is a 5-watt lamp, part number LB4000, switched on and off by its own button, so you can run the machine as a plain HEPA-and-carbon filter if you prefer. The manual says it should be replaced every 10 to 12 months depending on use, and a flashing blue light signals it. The maker states the UV efficacy testing used Staphylococcus albus, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger and Phi-X174; treat that as the scope of the claim rather than a general germ-killing promise.
Two things about the lamp deserve to be in your decision, not discovered later. The manual carries a plain warning that skin or eye damage may result from directly viewing the light this lamp produces, and instructs you to disconnect power before replacing it. And the manual states that the lamp contains mercury, directs disposal in line with spill, disposal and site cleanup requirements, and points to the EPA's CFL cleanup guidance and phone line if one breaks. Changing the bulb is also not a tool-free job: the manual's procedure requires a Phillips screwdriver to take out two screws and lift off the UV-C metal shield before the bulb is even visible. Follow the printed manual and the EPA guidance rather than improvising.
Placement, ozone and the ENERGY STAR contradiction
Placement is simple but not zero: the manual asks for a firm, level, flat surface with the unit at least one foot from any wall or furniture, no grilles blocked, nothing placed on top, and never on a soft surface such as a bed or sofa because it can tip and block the intake. It must be plugged directly into a 120 V AC outlet, is for indoor household use only, and must not be run through a solid-state speed control such as a dimmer. Lift it by the handle on the back when moving it.
On ozone the maker gives a real number rather than a slogan. The manual states the 8-hour time-weighted average ozone for this product is 0.001 ppmv when tested in a 30 m³ chamber, that the product complies with the maximum allowable concentration of 0.050 ppmv over 24 hours, and cites the Health Canada 2010 guideline of 0.020 ppmv or less over 8 hours in a sealed 30 m³ room. The maker's page adds CARB, ETL and independently verified Zero Ozone, and the listing repeats CARB and ETL. There is one clear contradiction to know about: the manual prints a full ENERGY STAR paragraph and the Amazon table says Energy Star Certified: Yes, while the maker's own attribute list for this product says 'Not Energy Star Certified'. Do not rely on an ENERGY STAR rating for this model without checking the current EPA listing yourself. Noise is given as 40 dBA low to 55 dBA high on the maker's page and flattened to 55 dB on the listing, with no distance or condition stated either way, so these are maker claims rather than comparable measurements.
Warranty terms, and the model and colour muddle
The manual's cover states a 3-year limited warranty for the AC4825 (the AC5000 in the same booklet gets five), and the maker's attribute list for this product says 3 year warranty. The conditions are tighter than the headline. It applies only to the original purchaser from the original purchase date, requires the original sales receipt or comparable dated proof of purchase, and covers products bought from authorised distributors only. It excludes damage from unusual wear, commercial use, abusive or unreasonable use, unauthorised repairs and any use not in line with the manual, and it states outright that attempting to repair or adjust the unit voids the warranty. Normal wear and tear is not treated as a manufacturing defect.
The service route is the part people miss: to claim, the complete machine must be delivered prepaid to Guardian Technologies in Euclid, Ohio, with the model number, purchase date, a copy of the receipt and your contact details. Registration on the maker's site is offered but explicitly optional. One last check before ordering: identity on this product is messy. The listing sells it as Gray with model and part number AC4825E, while the maker's page carrying the AC4825E SKU is titled 'black' in its heading and lists its colour attribute as Gray, and the supplied manual names only the AC4825 and AC5000 series without the E suffix. The same maker also sells AC4825DLX and white variants of the same tower. Confirm the colour and the seller on the offer you select, since warranty eligibility depends on buying from an authorised distributor.
