A 500cc all-metal dual fuel generator, not sold as an inverter

The XP13000EH is DuroMax's 500cc, 13,000-watt dual fuel portable generator with an all-metal frame and power panel, an 8.3-gallon gasoline tank and an automatic voltage regulator. The maker's spec table lists an OHV engine at 3,600 rpm and does not describe it as an inverter, and neither the product page nor the manual pages we read give a THD figure.

Amazon's model and part fields both read XP13000EH and the UPC matches DuroMax's page. The manual's package contents list a propane regulator with hose, an oil funnel with hose, a double-sided screwdriver, spanner wrenches, a spark plug wrench and plug ends for wiring your own cords. The product page's what's-in-the-box line also names a wheel and handle kit and the owner's manual.

Watts on gasoline and propane, and a small conflict

On gasoline, DuroMax rates the XP13000EH at 13,000 peak and 10,500 running watts, and the manual agrees. On propane the product page says 12,500 peak and 10,000 running, while the manual's specification and wattage tables say 12,350 surge and 9,975 rated. The gap is small, but if you plan to run on propane, size your loads against the lower manual figure.

For runtime, the product page gives 17 hours at 25 percent load and 8 hours at 50 percent on gasoline, and 13 and 6 hours on propane. The manual repeats 8 hours at 50 percent on gasoline and 6 hours at 50 percent on a 40-pound propane tank, and DuroMax suggests a 40-pound tank as the minimum. The manual also warns output falls about 3.5 percent per 1,000 feet of altitude.

Outlets include a 14-50R and an L14-30R

The spec table lists two 5-20R outlets, one L5-30R, one L14-30R, one 14-50R and a 12V automotive socket. The manual describes the 5-20R as GFCI protected, the L5-30R as 120 volts at 30 amps, and both the L14-30R and the 50-amp 14-50R as 120/240-volt receptacles. There is no TT-30R listed, so an RV with a 30-amp TT-30 plug would need an adapter that is not in the box.

Amazon's bullets call the 50-amp outlet transfer switch ready. The manual says never to connect to a building's wiring without a qualified electrician and in line with local codes, and to balance loads across both sides of the circuit. It also says idle control is for gasoline only and should not be used for backup house power, because it causes large voltage and frequency swings.

Weight, wheels, starting and the CO shutdown

Weight figures vary by source: Amazon and the product page's dry weight say 234 pounds, the product page's product weight says 248, and the manual's spec page says 246. The listed dimensions are 29 by 30 by 26 inches. The wheel kit uses 10-inch metal-hub wheels and is assembled by the owner; the manual labels that step optional.

Starting is by push button or recoil. The product page says a 12V sealed lead acid battery is included, and the manual has you connect its negative cable at setup and use a battery switch to prevent drain in storage. The product page also lists remote start, but the manual pages we read do not describe a remote. The manual's CO ALERT shuts the engine down when it detects dangerous CO, blocks a restart for five minutes, and shows yellow for a sensor fault.

Emissions status, placement and oil

The product page's spec table says EPA certified yes, CARB certified no and 50-state compliant no, while the manual's file name and warranty section include California emissions text. We are reporting the product page's own answer; California buyers should confirm with DuroMax before ordering. The noise figure is 74 dB on the product page and under 74 dB in the manual, with no distance or load stated.

The manual says outdoors only, in non-confined areas, with several feet of clearance on all sides for ventilation, not uncovered in rain, and grounded as it describes. The engine ships without oil; it takes 40.5 fluid ounces, 1.2 liters, of 10W-30. Break-in is the first 6 to 8 hours under half load on conventional oil, then an oil change. The schedule then calls for oil changes every three months or 50 hours of heavy use, or every six months or 100 hours of normal use.

The warranty covers parts, and freight is on you

DuroMax's warranty document and the manual give the original purchaser a three-year parts warranty for residential use, with unusually heavy or commercial use covered for one year. It is non-transferable, the owner pays freight on items sent in for repair or replacement, and it excludes normal wear, maintenance services, cosmetic defects, accessories and damage from non-OEM parts. Amazon's warranty field just says three years.

Neither document we read promises labor coverage under the three-year warranty. A separate emissions-control warranty runs two years and says DuroMax will repair covered emissions parts including diagnosis, parts and labor at a warranty station. The manual asks buyers to call DuroMax before returning the unit to a store.
