A dual fuel generator with CO ALERT and electric start

The XP5500HX is DuroMax's 5,500-watt peak dual fuel portable generator with a CO ALERT shutdown, an all-metal frame, a 4-gallon gasoline tank and an automatic voltage regulator. Amazon's model and part fields read XP5500HX and the UPC matches the maker page. DuroMax does not describe it as an inverter, and neither the page nor the manual pages we read give a THD figure.

Engine size is listed two ways: 210cc on the product page and Amazon, 224cc in the manual's specification table. The manual's package contents list a propane regulator with hose, which the spec table describes as four feet long, plus an oil funnel, a screwdriver, spanner wrenches, a spark plug wrench and plug ends for wiring cords. The product page adds a wheel and handle kit.

Running watts and runtime on each fuel

DuroMax rates it at 5,500 peak and 4,500 running watts on gasoline, and 5,225 peak and 4,275 running watts on propane; the product page and manual agree. The 5,500 in the listing title is the gasoline peak figure, so plan continuous loads against 4,275 watts if you expect to run on propane.

Runtimes on the product page are 19 hours at 25 percent load and 9 hours at 50 percent on gasoline, and 15 and 8 hours on propane. The manual ties its 8-hour propane figure to a 20-pound tank, which DuroMax also gives as the suggested minimum. The manual says the propane inlet is intended for a supply of at least 11 inches of water column.

One L14-30R, two GFCI outlets and the Power Boost switch

The spec table lists two 5-20R GFCI outlets, one L14-30R, and USB-A and USB-C ports. There is no TT-30R or 14-50R listed, although DuroMax calls the unit RV ready. Its Power Boost selector has two positions: 120/240V, needed for 240-volt loads on the L14-30R, and 120V only, which the manual says doubles the 120-volt amperage for heavy loads such as RV air conditioners.

The manual says 120V devices can use the L14-30R through a suitable adapter, and warns to change the voltage selector only with the main AC breaker off or the generator can be seriously damaged. It also says to balance loads across both sides of the circuit. An RV with a TT-30 plug would need an adapter that is not listed in the box.

Starting, CO ALERT, weight and placement

The manual describes a three-position Start, Run and Off switch with a 12V battery for electric start and a recoil backup. The product page's spec table also lists remote start as yes, but the manual pages we read describe no remote. CO ALERT lights red and shuts the engine down when dangerous CO is detected, blocks a restart for five minutes, and lights yellow for a system error.

The product page lists a dry weight of 128 pounds and a product weight of 131; the manual says 128 and Amazon says 131. Dimensions are 25 by 23 by 22 inches, with 8-inch metal-hub wheels. The manual says outdoors only in non-confined areas with several feet of clearance on all sides for ventilation, and notes exhaust-area temperatures can exceed 150°F.

Emissions status, oil and break-in

The product page's spec table says EPA certified yes, CARB certified no and 50-state compliant no, while the manual's emissions warranty statement mentions both the EPA and the California Air Resources Board. We report the product page's own answer, and California buyers should confirm with DuroMax. Noise is 69 dB on the page and under 69 dB in the manual, with no distance or load stated.

The engine ships without oil and takes about 20 fluid ounces, 0.6 liters, of 10W-30. Break-in is the first 6 to 8 hours under half load on conventional oil, then an oil change; synthetic can be used afterwards. The schedule then calls for oil changes every three months or 50 hours of heavy use, or every six months or 100 hours of normal use.

Five years of parts coverage for residential use

The manual and DuroMax's warranty document give the original purchaser a five-year parts warranty for residential use, with unusually heavy or commercial use covered for one year. Amazon's field says five years manufacturer. The warranty is non-transferable, the owner pays freight on items sent in, and it excludes normal wear, maintenance, cosmetic defects, accessories and non-OEM parts.

Neither document promises labor under the five-year warranty. A separate two-year emissions warranty covers diagnosis, parts and labor for covered emissions components at a warranty station. The manual asks buyers to call DuroMax before returning the generator to a store.
