A 224cc dual fuel generator with electric start

The DF475T is WEN's 4,750-watt surge, 224cc dual fuel portable generator with key electric start and a recoil backup. Amazon's model and part fields read DF475T and one of its UPCs matches the barcode in WEN's product data. Neither the manual nor the product page describes it as an inverter or gives a THD figure, so ask WEN before relying on it for sensitive electronics.

The manual's packing list includes feet, wheels and axles, a handle kit to assemble, a spark plug wrench, a first-stage regulator, a bottle of oil and the 47-inch LPG hose, which ships tucked under the fuel tank. It also warns that two red shipping brackets under the frame must be removed before use. The engine ships without oil in the crankcase.

Running watts on each fuel and a 90 percent guideline

WEN rates the DF475T at 4,750 surge and 3,800 running watts on gasoline, and 4,350 surge and 3,500 running watts on propane. The manual goes further and recommends keeping the continuous load at or below 3,420 watts on gasoline or 3,150 on propane, 90 percent of rated output, to keep voltage steady. Plan your essentials against those lower numbers.

Half-load runtime is 11 hours on the 4-gallon gasoline tank and 7 hours on a 20-pound propane tank, per the manual. It also says to change fuel only when the generator is off or running under half load. The LPG connection is for Type 1 cylinders, and the manual includes a leak check.

The L14-30R and the voltage selector trade-off

The panel has 120V 5-20R GFCI receptacles, one 120/240V L14-30R twist-lock at 30 amps, and a 12V 8-amp DC socket. There is no TT-30R or 14-50R. A voltage selector sets the output: in the 120V position the 5-20R outlets work and the L14-30R gives 120 volts; in the 120/240V position the 5-20R outlets turn off and the L14-30R gives 240 volts.

WEN's page describes plugging a transfer switch into the L14-30R. The manual says a building connection needs a qualified electrician and a transfer switch that meets local codes. The manual pages and product page we read do not mention a CO shutdown sensor, so do not assume one is fitted.

The battery must be connected even for recoil starts on gasoline

The generator ships with a 12V 7Ah lead-acid battery disconnected. The manual says that on gasoline the battery must be connected whether you use the key or the recoil cord; only a recoil start on propane works without it. If the battery goes flat, you can still start it by recoil on propane. The battery charges while the engine runs.

To keep the battery ready, the manual suggests running the generator for 20 to 30 minutes each month. It also says that if the battery is dead, the generator can still be started by recoil on propane. Net weight is 105.8 pounds with dimensions of 23.2 by 17.5 by 18.5 inches.

Placement, fuel and storage from the manual

The manual says to run it only outside, far from windows, doors and vents, on a dry, firm, level surface, with at least five feet of clearance from buildings or other equipment, and to allow at least two feet on all sides before starting. It should not be exposed to rain or wet conditions and should be grounded as the manual describes.

Use 87 octane minimum gasoline. The manual says to drain the carburetor after each use and before storage, to drain and clean the fuel tank each year or before storing more than two months, and never to store the generator with fuel in the tank for over two months. Amazon's details field lists CARB compliant, which we did not verify in a maker document.

Oil schedule and a two-year parts warranty

Oil capacity is 20.3 fluid ounces, 0.6 liters, and the manual lists oil grades by temperature. Check the oil before each use and every 8 hours. Change it after the first 8 hours, after the first 25 hours, and every 50 hours after that.

WEN's manual gives a two-year limited warranty for personal use to the original purchaser, with a shorter term for professional or commercial use. The remedy is replacement of defective parts, the purchaser prepays shipping, the purchase must be from a direct WEN vendor, and wear items such as recoil starters, batteries and wheel kits are excluded.
