EVIQO EVIPOWER J1772 48A Hardwired Level 2 EV Charger

A hardwired 60-amp circuit, or a 70-amp one if you want the 50-amp setting

EVIQO's hardwired EVIPOWER ships set to 48 amps on a dedicated 60-amp circuit and can be moved to 50 amps on a 70-amp circuit by an internal switch behind the faceplate. It has a 25-foot J1772 cable, an IP66 and NEMA 4 housing, and an app that must have Plug and Charge disabled before schedules work.

Fit and limits

Three versions share one guide, so check which one you are buying

EVIQO's data sheet lists four model numbers under the EVIPOWER name: EVIPOWER240J is the J1772 plug-in capped at 40 amps, EVIPOWER248J is a J1772 unit sold either as a plug-in set to 40 amps or hardwired at 48 amps, EVIPOWER240N is the NACS plug-in, and EVIPOWER248N is the NACS hardwired version. This listing is the hardwired J1772 one, with a 48-amp default.

The guide is blunt about what the plug can and cannot do. A plug-in version is preset to 40 amps because that is the maximum the regulations allow for a NEMA 14-50 plug-in charger, it needs an EV-graded 14-50 outlet on a 50-amp dedicated circuit, and the guide says in capitals not to try to draw 48 amps through a 14-50 receptacle because of fire risk. On the 40-amp plug-in model, turning the internal switch up does nothing: 40 amps stays the maximum.

The hardwired version you are looking at ships set to 48 amps and needs a dedicated 60-amp circuit. EVIQO includes a 3.2-foot three-wire whip with a liquid-tight connector and flexible conduit, and notes the unit has no rear cable port, so the bottom access port is used.

Fifty amps exists, but it lives behind the faceplate

EVIQO publishes the whole amperage table: a 70-amp circuit gives 50 amps at switch position 4, hardwire only; 60 amps gives 48 at position 3, hardwire only; 50 amps gives 40 at position 2, plug-in or hardwire; 40 amps gives 32 at position 1; 30 amps gives 24 by setting position 1 and reducing to 24 in the app; and 20 amps gives 16 at position 0. In Canada, a plug-in installation is permitted only with a 50-amp dedicated circuit.

Getting to 50 amps is a physical job, not an app setting. The Amperage Dip Switch is inside the unit on the motherboard, reached by powering off, removing the charger from its wall bracket with the supplied Allen wrench, unscrewing seven screws on the back and detaching the faceplate. EVIQO's own FAQ describes the same change as setting the internal DIP switches, and gives positions 4 and 5, while the installation guide's table gives value 4 for 50 amps; ask EVIQO which is right before your electrician opens the box.

EVIQO states the National Electrical Code 80 per cent rule as the reason for each pairing: a circuit should not be continuously loaded, meaning three hours or more, to more than 80 per cent of its rated capacity. The app adds a 1-amp-step adjuster that can only move within the range the hardware switch has set. Have a licensed electrician confirm your panel can carry the circuit you want before you order.

Weather, temperature and where it can go

The data sheet gives a NEMA 4 and IP66 protection level, wall-mounted installation, an operating temperature of -22°F to 131°F and a storage temperature of -40°F to 167°F, with up to 95 per cent non-condensing humidity in both cases. EVIQO's FAQ repeats that the enclosure is built for outdoor use against rain, snow and dust.

Siting has two practical constraints. The output cable is 25 feet, give or take three per cent, so the mount has to let it reach the car's port with slack. And EVIQO asks you to install the charger near the Wi-Fi router for a strong signal, avoiding surfaces that block it, which is a stronger requirement than most makers state.

As with other chargers, EVIQO recommends surge protection at the service panel in areas with frequent thunderstorms, and asks that power and ground connections at the breaker and busbar are clean and tight. It also tells owners to secure permits and approvals under local codes before installing, noting these may be needed to keep insurance eligibility.

Connector, protections and what is in the carton

Rated input is 208 to 240 volts AC at 60 Hz, and rated output current is listed as 16, 32, 40 amps for plug-in maximum and 48 amps for hardwire maximum. The output interface is an SAE J1772 connector on this version, with SAE J3400, the NACS standard, on the NACS versions. EVIQO's FAQ states that Tesla drivers need a J1772-to-NACS adapter, which is not included.

EVIQO lists input protections as undervoltage, overvoltage, a residual current device of the CCID20 type, surge protection and ground fault protection, and output protections as overcurrent, over-temperature and control pilot fault protection. The listing adds UL, ETL, FCC and ENERGY STAR certifications; those are the seller's claims and the guide's compliance section covers FCC Part 15.

The box holds the charger with its attached input cable, the installation guide, wall brackets for both charger and holster already fitted, two mounting templates, an Allen wrench, four anti-theft button-head screws, eight lag screws with gaskets, eight wall anchors, the holster, and pin terminal connectors for anyone converting a plug-in unit to hardwired. The holster on this listing is described as glow-in-the-dark.

The app, and one setting that cancels another

Connection is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to the EVIQO app, which handles start and stop, an amperage setting from 6 to 48 amps per the listing, reminders, and energy and cost tracking with weekly and monthly breakdowns. Firmware arrives over the air.

One behaviour is worth knowing before you set it up. The charger ships in Plug and Charge mode, which starts a session as soon as you connect the car. EVIQO states that Plug and Charge is mutually exclusive with Schedules and with Delayed Start: to use a schedule or a one-time delayed start, you must turn Plug and Charge off first.

Scheduling is built around Electricity Plans you enter in the app, which the app can copy into Schedules so charging lands in cheaper tariff periods. There is also a caveat for owners who precondition the cabin: the guide notes the preconditioning period set on the car must fall inside the charging window set in the EVIQO app. Nothing in the two documents describes dynamic load management or sharing a circuit between chargers.

Three years, parts exchange, and a long exclusion list

EVIQO gives a three-year parts exchange warranty from the original purchase date to the original purchaser, for residential use in the USA and Canada, non-transferable, and conditional on normal operating conditions and on following the installation guide and EVIQO's website recommendations. EVIQO repairs or replaces at its discretion, and may supply remanufactured, reconditioned or refurbished parts or stations; replacements carry the remainder of the original period.

Two costs stay with the owner. The warranty covers parts and factory labour but excludes on-site labour to uninstall or reinstall the unit, and EVIQO states the cost of shipping the charger to its designated address is not included. If EVIQO decides a unit is out of warranty it returns it, and can quote standard repair charges at your expense.

The exclusions run to ten numbered items. They include improper installation, improper site preparation or choosing the wrong location; unauthorised modification or disassembly; accidents, misuse, vandalism, negligence and being struck by a vehicle; failure to comply with federal or local law including the NEC; and, named specifically, failure to use an EV-graded NEMA 14-50 receptacle on the 40-amp and 48-amp plug-in models. Power surges, extreme temperatures, humidity, floods, corrosive substances, unauthorised repairs, normal wear and cosmetic damage are also excluded, as is damage from third-party parts or software not approved by EVIQO in writing.
