A hardwired circuit where you want to pick the amperage to suit the panel

Home Flex is set at install to match your circuit, anywhere from 16 to 50 amps, with ChargePoint publishing the circuit-to-load table. This hardwired J1772 version can reach the 50-amp maximum, which needs a 70 or 80-amp circuit, and it is the configuration ChargePoint points to for outdoor mounting.

One charger, seven circuit ratings

Home Flex is set at installation to match the circuit it is on, and ChargePoint publishes the whole table. An 80-amp or 70-amp circuit gives a 50-amp maximum load; a 60-amp circuit gives 48 amps; a 50-amp circuit gives 40 amps; a 40-amp circuit gives 32 amps; a 30-amp circuit gives 24 amps; and a 20-amp circuit gives 16 amps. Estimated range per hour runs from 37 miles at the top down to 12 miles at the bottom.

Only some of those are available on a plug. ChargePoint's table marks plug-in as possible on 50-amp and 40-amp circuits only; 80, 70, 60, 30 and 20-amp ratings are hardwire only. This ASIN is the hardwired J1772 configuration, so it can reach the full 50 amps, and ChargePoint's product page recommends the hardwired version for outdoor installation.

ChargePoint adds a note for Canada: a plug-in installation is only allowed with a 50-amp circuit. And the guide states the recommendation plainly, that while the charger can be installed either way, ChargePoint recommends hardwiring for optimal performance.

The 125 per cent rule and the terminal limits

The guide sets out the requirement that decides everything else: Home Flex is a continuous load device, so the circuit must be rated for 125 per cent of the maximum load, and you must consult all applicable codes for breaker and wire sizing. That is why a 40-amp draw needs a 50-amp circuit and a 50-amp draw needs a 70 or 80-amp one.

Two hardware limits go with it. The field-wiring terminal is rated to 105°C and accepts a maximum of 6 AWG wire, and the guide says to use 90°C copper conductors only. It also requires a 240V dedicated circuit with a new, dedicated, non-GFCI two-pole breaker, in line with local codes.

On GFCI, ChargePoint takes the same position as several makers: if local codes require a GFCI breaker for a plug-in installation, it recommends hardwiring instead, because Home Flex has charging circuit interrupting device protection of its own and a GFCI breaker in the panel can cause nuisance tripping. Have a licensed electrician confirm your panel's capacity and which route your jurisdiction allows before you order.

Cold and heat limits you should check against your garage

The guide gives two operating ranges, and the difference matters if you plan to run at full power. Set to 16 to 48 amps, the range is -40°F to 122°F. Set to 50 amps, the top of the range drops to 113°F. Operating outside those ranges is listed among the safety instructions as something not to do.

The listing describes a cold-resistant cable, and ChargePoint's own low-temperature figure of -40°F supports the idea that the unit is built for cold climates. Where the guide is silent is on the enclosure's ingress rating: neither it nor ChargePoint's product page, in the pages we read, gives a NEMA type or IP number for the housing, so if you need a rating for a permit, ask ChargePoint.

The guide also asks for surge protection at the service panel in areas with frequent thunderstorms, and for all power and ground connections at the breaker and bus bar to be clean and tight with oxide removed before wiring. Outdoor installation requires hardwiring or an outdoor-rated, weather-resistant outlet.

Siting, mounting and what is in the box

The box for the J1772 hardwired configuration holds the charging station, a pre-installed faceplate, an installation template, the J1772 charging cable connector with its cable clip, a pre-installed wire cover, a 10 millimetre driver bit, a 4 millimetre drill bit and three lag screws. The installer also needs a stud finder, level, drill, coin, needle-nose pliers and the ChargePoint Installer app.

Mounting height is specified: the centre of the mounting location goes 39 to 43 inches above the floor. The surface must support the full weight of the station with the cord hanging from it, and Wi-Fi signal must reach the spot. The listing gives the cable as 23 feet, which is not stated in the maker sources we read, so measure the run to your car's charge port and leave slack.

For a plug-in version, which this ASIN is not, ChargePoint notes the input power cable is only 18 inches long as required by the National Electrical Code for EV chargers, and that the outlet must sit 20 to 26 inches off the ground next to the mounting stud. That is a common reason a plug-in charger will not reach an existing outlet.

The app, the network and what needs Wi-Fi

Home Flex is set up and activated through the ChargePoint app, and the guide's final steps are the homeowner following the Quick Start Guide to activate the station and enable advanced features. ChargePoint's product page presents the same app as the one that handles public charging on its network as well as the charger at home.

The listing carries a caveat worth repeating: Wi-Fi is needed for certain functionality and for troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise. Scheduling around off-peak rates and charge limits are app features, so a garage with weak Wi-Fi is a real constraint, and the guide's siting step includes ensuring Wi-Fi signal is available before mounting.

Neither maker source we read describes dynamic load management, sharing a circuit between two chargers, or a subscription for home use. ChargePoint's page states UL listing, ENERGY STAR certification and the three-year warranty; the listing repeats all three.

Three years, parts exchange, single-family residence only

The guide's limited warranty gives three years from the date of original purchase against defects in materials or workmanship under normal operating conditions, to the original purchaser, for use at their residence. It is not transferable and is valid only for purchasers in the USA and Canada. ChargePoint elects whether to repair or replace.

The warranty covers parts and factory labour to repair the station but specifically excludes on-site labour to uninstall or reinstall it. Service runs through a Return Material Authorization: you contact support, supply a description of the fault, the model and serial numbers, proof of purchase and shipping information, then send the station back in its original or an equally protective container.

Exclusions are broad and specific. They include abuse, vandalism, accidents, misuse or negligence, including physical damage from being struck by a vehicle; damage caused by products not supplied by ChargePoint; installation, alteration, disassembly, modification or relocation not approved in writing by ChargePoint or performed by a licensed electrician per the guide; extreme power surges, extreme electromagnetic fields and acts of nature; and use with any non-genuine accessory or part such as a third-party cable or plug. The warranty also does not apply if identification markings have been removed, or if the station is installed anywhere other than a single-family residence. Failing to install and operate as instructed is stated up front as something that voids the warranty.
