A 1440p camera built around an optional LTE plan
Garmin's product page describes the Dash Cam Live as a 1440p LTE dash cam with a 140-degree field of view, where LTE connectivity, which requires a subscription, gives anytime live view, location tracking, theft alerts and parking guard notifications. The listing names part 010-02619-00 and includes a pre-installed 16GB microSD card, a low-profile magnetic mount, a 4-metre power cable, a 1.5-metre power and data cable and a dual-USB adapter.
The manual's resolution menu offers 1440p, 1080p and 720p, each at 30fps with HDR. The listing's frame-rate field says 60 FPS, which does not match any setting in the manual. Plan around 30fps.
What works on Wi-Fi and what needs LTE
The manual says you can buy an optional LTE subscription in the Garmin Drive app to use connected features outside a Wi-Fi network. Those features are Live View, Locate Vehicle, unidentified driver alerts, incident messaging to emergency contacts, and Parking Guard uploads to the Vault. Unidentified driver alerts and incident messaging specifically require an active LTE subscription.
On a Wi-Fi network, such as a home network or phone hotspot, the camera can upload incident videos and show Live View without LTE. Garmin cautions that the LTE features are supplemental, depend on reception and power, and should not be your primary way to monitor the vehicle. The manual adds that the Garmin Drive app does not contact emergency services for you.
Vault storage: 24 hours free, longer with a plan
According to the manual, saved videos upload to the Vault automatically over Wi-Fi or active LTE, and your Garmin Drive account stores them for up to 24 hours with no size limit. An optional Vault subscription extends the storage time and is also described as the way to use the LTE features. Vault is not available in all countries.
You can share a secure link to a Vault video and disable that link later. When the camera is turned off manually while connected to Wi-Fi or LTE, it uploads available videos before shutting down. Viewing videos in the app or on the camera pauses recording and alerts.
Parking Guard and power options
Parking Guard records automatically when the car is parked and sends a phone notification over Wi-Fi or LTE. The manual's settings include auto start, impact sensitivity, monitoring time, Run on Battery to use the camera battery without external power, and Record Before Incident, which saves 15 seconds before an event but needs external power.
With external power connected when you switch off, Parking Guard enables after five seconds. The listing notes some vehicles will need Garmin's Constant Power Cable, sold separately; the manual describes it as an always-on 12V OBD II adapter that can power up to two cameras for a selected time after the vehicle is off.
Cards, alerts and placement
The included card is 16GB. Garmin's specification allows microSDHC or microSDXC from 8 to 512GB, Class 10 or faster, formatted exFAT, and higher resolutions use more space. Incident detection saves 15 seconds before and after an event, and a Promptly Delete option clears unsaved footage older than three minutes for privacy.
Driver alerts include a forward collision warning above 30 mph, lane departure and safety camera alerts. For the driver alerts to work well, the manual asks you to set horizontal placement and vehicle height, choosing Tall for a full-size van or truck. Voice commands save video, control audio and take photos.
Temperature, input and warranty
The manual rates the Dash Cam Live for operation from -4°F to 158°F and charging from 32°F to 140°F, with a 5V 2A input. It lists radios at 2.4GHz and 5.1GHz plus a 1.75GHz band, and notes the 5150 to 5250MHz band is for indoor use only in Canada.
The listing's warranty field says one year limited warranty. Garmin's own terms are in the Important Safety and Product Information guide in the box, which we did not read. LTE and Vault plans are bought separately in the Garmin Drive app, so plan for them if remote features are why you want this model.
