A 4K front and 2K rear pair that can grow to three channels

This listing is the A229 Pro 2CH: a front camera with a 2.4-inch screen and a separate rear camera. VIOFO names the sensors as a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8MP at the front and an IMX675 5MP at the rear. The manual's two-camera modes include 2160P30 at the front plus 1440P30 at the rear.

The manual also covers an optional interior camera on a 1-metre cable, plus an optional Bluetooth remote and telephoto or waterproof rear cameras. None of those are in this box. HDR can be set separately for front and rear and is on by default.

What is in the box, and the card you must buy

The listing's contents are the front and rear cameras, a CPL filter, a 3.5-metre car charger, windshield static stickers, a 6-metre rear cable, two spare sticky pads, a rear mount, a trim removal tool and a GPS module with sticker. The manual notes that the USB data cable is only for transferring files and upgrading firmware, not for powering the camera.

No microSD card is included. The manual asks for a Class 10 or UHS-I card up to 512GB, formatted to exFAT or FAT32 before first use, and says to power the camera off before inserting or removing it. Budget for a card before the camera arrives.

Parking mode works only with a hardwire kit

The manual offers three parking modes: auto event detection, which records when it sees motion, time-lapse at 1 to 10 frames per second without audio, and low-bitrate continuous recording. The listing says event detection is buffered, keeping 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after an event. Time-lapse at 1fps can use a Super Night Vision option.

The manual states that parking mode works only with the engine off and a USB Type-C hardwire kit providing continuous power, and recommends VIOFO's HK4 ACC kit, which it says also protects the car battery. The listing confirms the HK4 is not included. Without it, the camera turns on and off with the engine through the car charger.

Heat limits: three different temperature figures

VIOFO's specification table gives an operating range of minus 20°C to 65°C and storage from minus 20°C to 70°C. The listing says the camera performs from 5°F to 149°F, which is roughly minus 15°C to 65°C. The manual separately advises turning the camera off if the temperature inside the car goes above 60°C.

The camera has no battery and uses a supercapacitor, according to both the listing and VIOFO, and takes 5V, 2A input. For hot-climate parking, the manual recommends time-lapse mode. Treat the manual's 60°C advice as the practical ceiling even though the specification table allows higher.

Voice control, Wi-Fi and GPS

The manual lists voice commands, and the listing counts twelve. A privacy mode keeps only the latest few normal recordings, according to the manual. Read the manual's command list for the exact wording each command needs.

Wi-Fi can run on 2.4GHz or 5GHz, and the manual recommends 5GHz for the VIOFO app; the network name and password show on the camera screen, and the manual's example screen shows the password 12345678. GPS is built into the mount and supplies speed, position and time. The listing lists support for GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS.

18-month warranty, 24 with registration

The manual says all products are warranted for 18 months from the date of purchase and accessories for 12 months, with lifetime technical support. Registering the product on VIOFO's site extends the camera's warranty from 18 to 24 months. The listing's warranty field says the same, and VIOFO's product page shows 18-month warranty protection and a 14-day returns policy on its own sales.

The manual warns not to unplug or power off the camera during a firmware upgrade, as it may then fail to boot. Size figures differ: VIOFO lists the front camera at 2.3 by 3.9 by 1.8 inches, while the listing gives 1.7 by 2.3 by 3.9 inches and 1.87 pounds for the set.
